e-file only takes 8 days for the IRS to refund money into your account. Be aware that there are companies that claim a rapid refund and what they do is just e-file, give you your money in 8 days and charge you 100%+ APR for doing so. If that doesn't make sense than please send your expendable money my way.

As one of those tax professionals, I would also like to add that while filing day has been moved back to April 18th this year (NO JOKE), please do us all a favor and get your stuff in before the 15th. I don't want to work super late hours that weekend because you decided that taking a trip to Hawai'i to bang your mistress is more important than getting your taxes filed on time.

While this is mostly correct, do not lull yourself into believing that 8 days bit. The IRS drains e-files on Thursday afternoons, so any filed returns in that 7 day period is processed then. If you e-filed on Friday after the drain, then you won't be processed for refund until the next Thursday, then it's 8 days. For example, if you filed and were accepted today, you would not see your refund until April 8th.

I'm a CPA, so I'm getting a kick...

I don't see those 16th amendment fools. They don't have any need for my type, which is just fine by me. I do, however, have a plethora of people who don't understand how taxes work, complain to me about this or that (prepare for csb ahead). Two examples from the past week:

I had a client who worked a W-2 job in 2009. Quit her job and started a daycare in her home at the beginning of 2010. Made $36k in revenue, $20k net (not including her husband's income). Didn't pay any estimated taxes in 2010 for the daycare. She got a fat refund for her 2009 (she wasn't my client then) but I told her she owes for 2010. She's questioning my knowledge because she made just as much in her daycare business as her previous W-2 job and she doesn't understand why she has to pay this year. It tried to explain the concept of withholdings and why she should have paid estimated taxes. I could have been speaking Farsi, from the look on her face.

A woman was looking for a new tax preparer and asked if jewelry was tax deductible because she had to "look successful and attractive" in her job as a real estate agent. I told her it's not deductible. "But my last tax preparer said it was ok!" she complained. "He's not the one to decide," I told her. "Oh yes he is," she shot back. "I don't think I'm the right one for you," I told her and escorted her to the door. I felt like saying something harsh, but I'm proud of myself that I resisted the urge.

Farking taxes...oh well, enough screwing around. Gotta get back to work.

Right back at ya! Some people's former clients, I tell you.

The one thing I hate doing is trying to recreate a prior year return prepared by someone who appears to be a monkey punching a keyboard with a banana. There are some things that I just cannot believe a EA/CPA tries to get away with. I once saw a prior year return that had dry cleaning as a 2106 expense. For a cubicle jockey.

I would just like to take a moment to point out that the corporations, while they don't claim the 16th is illegal, they just flaunt it anyway, don't pay taxes and get hand outs from the government (both sides) while raking in huge profits and putting thousands of working people into poverty.

Remember that when you vote for "choice" A and "choice" B to push the wedge issue of your preference that they wont actually act on.

So let's see. As is usual on Fark, anytime it is pointed out that 47% of American households don't pay tax, the response is always "income taxes aren't the only taxes."

Now, taking that into consideration, would you like to retract or clarify your statement?

I consider it my contribution to the United States government, and most of it has to do with my (and my wife's) irresponsibility with money. Your point is well-received, but I'd rather give my Uncle Sam a zero-interest loan than penalties for paying my taxes late. It is what it is, what can I say?

So you don't have a real answer to my question, you just want to shut down all corporations. Without realizing that the vast majority of "corporations" are actually S-Corps or Partnerships that pass through their income and expenses to the individual shareholders or partners, and constitute 95% of small businesses in this country.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is what is called "refundable." That means that if the credit exceeds your tax liability, you receive the difference as a refund.

Well, a quick and dirty calculation has you with $31,300 of taxable income, withholdings of $105, and a Making Work Pay Credit of $800 against a tax of $3861. You must have other deductions to account for, otherwise with just income of $50K and that withholding, you'd owe $2956.

blackheart666: The_Six_Fingered_Man: blackheart666: The_Six_Fingered_Man: blackheart666: The_Six_Fingered_Man: blackheart666: I would just like to take a moment to point out that the corporations, while they don't claim the 16th is illegal, they just flaunt it anyway, don't pay taxes and get hand outs from the government (both sides) while raking in huge profits and putting thousands of working people into poverty.

Nationalize the corporations and execute the executives.

Clear enough?

Yeah, that's a sound economic approach. Why are you heading up the Fed?

I'm not... people don't want real change in this country. They want "change" that's really just the same old shiat with a smiling (half)black man on the cover of it.

So you don't have a real answer to my question, you just want to shut down all corporations. Without realizing that the vast majority of "corporations" are actually S-Corps or Partnerships that pass through their income and expenses to the individual shareholders or partners, and constitute 95% of small businesses in this country.

Traded on Wall St? No? Then they're ok. Otherwise... up against the wall.

So you are cool with Koch Industries, Bechtel, Chrysler, Hearst Corp, S.C. Johnson, and Mars sticking around? That's refreshing, I guess.

interstitialofficial: Taxes aren't the problem; usury is.

M. Burns: "Are you familiar with this state's strict usury laws?"

Homer: "Usawa???"

M. Burns: "Oh silly me I must be making up words again..."

The_Six_Fingered_Man: FreakinB: The_Six_Fingered_Man: As one of those tax professionals, I would also like to add that while filing day has been moved back to April 18th this year (NO JOKE), please do us all a favor and get your stuff in before the 15th. I don't want to work super late hours that weekend because you decided that taking a trip to Hawai'i to bang your mistress is more important than getting your taxes filed on time.

As one of the 1065 professionals who's probably holding up your K-1, sorry. We're on it, I assure you.

Liar. :)

Heh. Yeah, only so much you can do when the information doesn't come in. But the government has decided to have me give up more of my summer so that you guys can get K-1s by 9/15 instead of 10/15, so you're welcome :)

Hey, I'm in the same boat. I think I put 85% of my biz entities on extension.

The idea that 16th amendment authorizes the federal income tax on wages fails on a number of grounds. Proper ratification, court decisions back in the 19teens and 20s, and a few others. Like much of what the federal government does, it just plain isn't legal. But legal doesn't matter, they have the guns. In the end it is that threat of violence why people pay the income tax, not that it's legal/constitutional or not.

Even if you believe the 16th amendment really does authorize the income tax, what difference does that make? Like Farkers not paying their respective states' use-taxes... would you pay the income tax if they didn't have the guns to make you?

Too many correctly spelled words, and no sparkly eagles or flags.

No sir, I don't think you'll catch anyone with this one.

Taxes done yesterday......Paid Uncle Sam today....$597.00....I'm in the 25% tax bracket....next year lose the $400 'relief' from the Government. Glad my $597.00 is going to some unemployed crack-head.

Naw, your $597 went toward a Tomahawk missile. So, you can feel better about yourself.

/Mine is going to go toward repaving a chunk of Interstate 10, which I almost never use. >=(
