The measure, proposed by Republican Rep. Carl Gatto of Palmer, instructs courts not to uphold any foreign laws if doing would strip a person of their constitutional rights.

You don't need a law for that Einstein.

Could we maybe save ourselves a lot of time and money and just erect a giant statue somewhere of an enormous hand giving the middle finger with the words "Fark Islam" painted on it? It would be just as effective as these stupid laws, and republicans wouldn't have to keep wasting time in our state legislatures.

Agreed. It would be more honest and straight to the point.

Since many Muslims use sharia codes and many Jews use halakhic codes to handle their wills/estate/inheritance, there will be a lawsuit in 3...2....1. Hope the state likes spending taxpayer dollars to defend counterproductive laws.

Who exactly is proposing Sharia law in these states, anyway?

2011-03-25 11:33:53 AM
Idaho, who?

2011-03-25 11:33:54 AM
Exactly how much time is the GOP planning on wasting with bullshiat like?

2011-03-25 11:34:09 AM
I think we should enact a law that would disallow any Martians from coming here and trying to impose Martian Law on us as well.

We have to think ahead about these things. Close the loopholes before it's too late.

I don't think I understand the question. They aren't wasting time. This IS what Republicans do when they are in power. It's not like we're going to be seeing them get to actual governing.

Cythraul: Who exactly is proposing Sharia law in these states, anyway?

Nobody, but the GOP is just being proactive. I'm sure they'll get around to passing laws saying that the US Code holds primacy over the prime directive any day now.

What about martian law?

2011-03-25 11:38:34 AM
A state House committee has approved a bill banning the use of foreign law in state courts.
Cool no more use of the Ten Commandments/bible in court.

I would love to see the future version of Colin Powell holding up a vial of tachyons before the Federation Council.

we're such a tolerant country, we could tolerate a switch over to shariah.

You read my mind. Seriously, you read my mind and you didn't have permission. I propose a law against mind reading.

Will this include private, legally binding arbitration?

The irony will be when conservatives Judges make rulings referencing the bible or 10 commandments and they will get thrown out because the lawyer can say they are based on foriegn law.

Dammit! In this country we obey the laws of thermodynamics!

Based on what happened in FLA yesterday, no.

USA! USA! USA!

keep 'em scared...

2011-03-25 11:44:43 AM
Besides how can they even do this when the US follows Common Law which is based on English law? Is the state now banning all common law decision now?

Is all the case law based on common law now being tossed out the window?

Have fun with that. If so you have just radically changed all law in your state.

True. Especially given that our laws say the opposite of #1-5, 7, and 10. (And even #6 and 8 are allowed in some circumstances.) And yet, Republicans are still hot to trot to get a copy of that nonsense into every courtroom and school.

And it should be struck down as unconstitutional. Making more laws doesn't fix the problem. Enforcing the ones we have is fine.

/fix old, no new, or whatever.

I was worried we'd get sidetracked with this whole Libya thing or the labor market instead of focusing on the really important issues, like drilling for imaginary giant oil fields in the Everglades and keeping Sharia law out of Wichita.

So yay Alaska. Or something.

I'm not sure but I'll alaska someone.

All of it. All of the time

I will not sacrifice Alaska. We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our country, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further! And I will make them pay for what they've done!

I completely agree. But we should try to surreptitiously slip an "L" onto the ends of some of the words in the text (change "Martian" to "Martial"). That way when they finally try to enact martial law to usurp the last of our freedoms we can bust out the legalese and say, "Hey, this law you enacted bans martial law!"

"The two parties reportedly agreed ahead of time to use an imam and Islamic Law"

Which is no different than Catholics seeking annulments outside of civil divorce law.

Cythraul: Who exactly is proposing Sharia law in these states, anyway?

As "Sharia Law", no one.

As "Law should be shaped primarily by religious codes of conduct and we, as a society, should abandon the idea of secular government and look to a single specific religious text to know what to do and who to punish", the GOP.

Which is probably why they're so keen on banning Sharia law. They're worried about infringement.

Republican Rep. Carl Gatto

What the hell were the people in Palmer thinking when they elected this guy?

Nome.

Is there some kind of precedent for judges, you know, actually doing the thing that this legislation is trying to ban?

Listen, you commie socialist mooslim lover, stop trying to get around this pro-American law! If you don't like it, GTFO of Juneau!

You park the tip of that digit in a statue of Muhammad, and I'll chip in.

What "foriegn law" looks like.

Good: gets rid of that damned Hebraic law. Which we all break routinely anyway.

Of course this means that Alaska's going back to Tlingit law, such as "Always send the squaws downriver in the spring to test for ice jams."
