FTFA "He also warned others -- an apparent reference to Palestinian groups -- from giving Israel any excuse to use violence, adding that Egypt rejected and condemned violence against civilians."

Subby apparently was exhausted after the herculean effort of reading two rather short and simple paragraphs and thus missed the above nugget.

Meet the new boss? doesn't the rest go 'same as the old boss'?

Mubarak was getting payed off by the US as to not screw with Israel.

Maybe the new boss is waiting for his stipend, and this is just a reminder...

Yeah, I'm sure Israel can handle them. Plus this time they won't give back any of the land they conquer.

WTF Indeed: Yeah, I'm sure Israel can handle them. Plus this time they won't give back any of the land they conquer.

You're an idiot. Another war would destabilize the entire region, create a field day for Al Qaeda recruitment, and drag the United States into another protracted occupancy of a country at the bargain basement price of billions of dollars a year.

Well, he's not wrong. He might be glossing over the fact that MOST people would go "Hey no thanks, Al Qaeda" but they would definitely be there. They're a pervasive organization, if not diabolically successful genius masterminds.

Notwithstanding the fact that the best intelligence places them at having around 100 members. Hoo boy, that's something to be scared of right there.

It's about time the Muslim countries stood up to Israel. Egypt just announced no more discounted oil for them either.

They've been coddling the Jews for too long.

Think of them as a franchise organization. The core organization isn't doing well, but they've diversified their holdings to increase their market share. There are groups operating in countries like Iraq, Somalia, and Yemen that aren't part of the Al Qaeda structure but use the Al Qaeda "brand" to promote their particular organization.

Sometimes senior Al Qaeda members act as consultants, helping these fledgling groups get off the ground, and in other cases, it's probably just a group of radical young adults that get together and blow shiat up in the name of Al Qaeda. Either way, it doesn't take a huge organization to do some serious damage.

If Israel gets in a war with Egypt, you can probably expect an increase in these sort of franchise groups and a lot more attacks on soft targets, like Dubai, rather than the main organization committing their resources to huge 9/11-type attacks.

Maybe so, but that doesn't refute his statement that Israel will kick Egypt's ass, which they will.

giving gaza to egypt would not be so hard. the boundries are well defined and there's not a dead sea or a river between them.

West Bank is a convoluted mess. no one knows where the boarders are. there is a river and the dead sea. settlers. jerusalem. a whole mess of historic (christian, muslim, jew) sites. west bank is a cluster fark.

They're not going to go at it. Both sides are taking money from the U.S. and neither side wants to lose their allowance.

This is political posturing for the masses on both sides.

I'm sorry, but everything I've been reading says that Al Qaeda is basically dead. Its got a handful of members, but everyone has either splintered off or isn't capable of doing anything besides publishing a gurka fashion magazine.

Oh, and subby is an ignoramus if he thinks that the old regime was anti-Israel. They weren't.

Imagine if we'd gotten ME support for going into Iraq. Imagine if we'd let Europe take the lead. Imagine if we'd remained in a support role, relegated to targeting air defense units and enemy armor attacking civilian population centers.

Imagine if we'd actually be cheered as liberators.

Imagine all of that. That would be Libya today.

So, it's OK for the Palestinians to shoot long range missiles and a barrage of rockets against Israel, but it's not OK for them to fight back.

Gotta love this new, free Egypt.

Yeah taking in 1.6 million, poor refugees is probably not at the top of Egypt's to do list. It's much the same reason why SK doesn't want any part of NK. It's not that they wouldn't win, it's what they'd have to do with the aftermath.

Isn't that just the number left along the Pakistan/Afghan border?

And I suspect that's just hard-core members. There are probably plenty of sympathizers and recruitables.

I'd love to go hunt Bin Laden down and bring him in dead or alive (if he's not already dead), but I'm not actually going to travel half-way around the world and probably get killed before ever getting near him.

If you think Egypt saying dir balak is going to make a big difference when Hamas keeps launching Qassams and Grads from gaza, bombs are going off in Jerusalem, and infants and children and getting stabbed to death, you're going to be very disappointed.

In the last 72 hours over 70 qassams and grads have been fired into israel, and more mortars, etc. After a period of relative quiet...that's bad. Israel can't let it continue, Egypt or no Egypt.

2011-03-23 08:39:27 PM
Some possible reason as to why Hamas decided to restart attacks on Israel is to divert anger from its own population.

2011-03-23 08:41:12 PM
The proper response to a Palestinian rocket or mortar attack is a 55 gallon drum of pig blood dropped onto a Hamas facility or safe house. When a large tract of their territory becomes irredeemably defiled (rather than simply blown up, which they seem to enjoy) they may start to think twice about attacking Israel. Bonus: No one can accuse the Israelis of doing this to drive the Palestinians out of Gaza since it makes the land unfit for Jews as well. This strategy would work perfectly with the turkeys in Iran too: "Smash your centrifuges and place the wreckage out where our spy planes can see it or we'll drench the Shrine of Fatimah in pig guts."
