boo hooo
rich people are complaining about other rich people building big expensive shiat.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I love how they use environmental shiat as excuses to block a building. rofl.

Q: What's the difference between a conservationist and a shiathead developer?

A: The former already owns a nice house, and the latter wants to build one.

this this and more this

I didnt read anywhere in the article, they are talking about tearing down all the buildings and ripping out all the roads and letting the canyon go back to nature, right?? LOL

It's in Benedict Canyon, wait until there's a quake/fire/el nino... it won't last long.

Though, all those construction truck on a small road will much up the morning drive for some of us Valley drones who have to take the canyons to the Westside for work. That is, if I can find a job.

namatad: rich people are complaining about other rich people building big expensive shiat.

I can kinda understand the cases where someone is going to tear down a house that actually matches the area and put up something way out of scale that will actually loom over other properties, but reading TFA it seems that
(1) the lot is pretty secluded, like all the others,
(2) all the razing and destruction of a possibly nice historic house is long over, and finally
(3) currently there's some eyesore of a wall there and that's about it.

So yeah, I don't see the problem really. It's not as if the planned house will have no greenzone buffer, right? So it'll just be another gate with some grounds behind it, not a high rise two feet from some normal house's kitchen window.

Geez, now that this has ended up on Fark, I may just have to build my mansion somewhere else.

That much square footage does have the potential to affect the ecosystem in the land and the land around it. For example, how much of it is going to be either paved or rooftop? What's their plan for handing storm water? Will a strong rain back up a creek and erode it?

It's not an excuse to block the building, but if there plan was to only have 30% greenspace on that site and no plan for storm water management, I'd have a talk with them about getting a rain garden, rain barrels, or something to manage that water before approving the permit.

And that's just one of many concerns.

ecosystem?
PLEASE
we are talking about human habits.
the ecosystems was changed and farked the moment the first house was build and first road.

sure, it can fark with everyone else.
I have no problem that they need to not build walls or shiat which will then screw with everyone else when the rains come.
but that is engineering, not ecology

Apparently they have come up with some new definition of ecosystem I was unaware of that excludes any environment that humans have impacted. I apologize.

Nah, drainage CAN be an issue - but most places have regulations on handling that, so surely the Ginormous Palace House can just plan to have a detention pond right there on site, just like Wal Mart.

He can even put a gaudy fountain in it!

yup, I looked here (realizing that it isnt definitive), didnt find LA.

yes of course, the planet is one giant ecosystem, and a big building will effect that.

but what the people here are talking about is a NIMBY problem, not an ecosystem problem.

Californians are generally high-functioning retards who can't even process the idea that other people's property does not also belong to them.

Drainage and engineering? Yes, those are proper concerns for people in the neighborhood because the wrong change to the local drainage could actually destroy their existing homes.

Derpda derpda my drum circle spirit animal feels like maybe you can't have a house unless you plant enough Appeasement Gardens of Peace? We should put those people on a reservation somewhere in the desert and make them mine uranium ore by hand.

No, I don't think these people are primarily motivated by their concern for the local environment - I just think it's wrong to immediately dismiss the environmental concerns because it is a NIMBY issue.

It's going to be built, get over it. The property tax people and the spending politicians are both drooling over the prospect of all the new money rolling in. And let's not forget that increase in all adjacent properties due to the improvements in the area. Our area used to have pretty strict standards, without a lot of deviation allowed, until some developers started with the campaign contributions. Suddenly, lot sizes changed, height restrictions gone, you name it, anything goes.

Yes, this is a NIMBY problem-- but this mystery person is pretty much asking to put up a Wal-Mart in their neighborhood. The whole "this is my land I can do whatever I want with it" nonsense is an incredibly primitive outlook. When you put up something of this size you are impacting the value of all the homes around it. If the current owners feel that it will negatively affect them, they're justified in fighting it.

"It's commercial-scale construction, like building a Wal-Mart in the heart of a quiet residential neighborhood," said Martha Karsh, who lives with her husband, Bruce, just east of the site.

If there were going to be a massive parking lot and 20,000 cars a day there, then it would be like a Wal-Mart. There won't be.

Primitive huh? You sound like a renter.

OH NOES there goes the neighborhood!

Only goes to show it's all relative.

IAAl: Fortunately this is all about the environment and the character and aesthetic of the neighborhood and has nothing to do with these people not wanting some 'A-rab' in their community.

it doesn't even sound like that, looks like people were opposed before they started digging around for who owned it. In a land of excess like LA where it's not unheard of to see 10,000 sq ft home. 80,000 sq ft does seem kind of excessive. That is the size of a decent walmart. It's bigger than most European castles.

on more curious note if I had the cash to play, I don't think I would ever build a house that big, It's not even a cost thing. When would I ever need that much space? I mean that's like sleeping in a different room every week and taking 2 years to sleep in them all. after awhile there's only so many rooms you need, and I'm sure this dude could have 50 man caves.

plus homes like that are a declining asset. No one else would ever pay as much for the monstrosity.

It does raise the question: why would this guy want to live in such a slum?

2011-03-23 07:15:58 AM
But, but gentrification is only okay when it happens to the lower class!

Sorry, but if there is no current legal precedent / contractual agreement in his purchase preventing the landowner from building something of his choosing on his land, and he follows all construction requirements, the rest of the neighbors shouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Of course with their combined cash, anything is possible in our system.

If the neighbors' complaints ultimately come down to thinking a house that big is tacky, I don't see where they have any grounds. It sounds like he house won't even be visible from neighboring property, so there's no need to use the power of the courts to enforce standards of taste.

As for Beverly Hills being "concerned" about trucks bearing construction debris travelling their roads, the property contains three lots. If three people had bought them and built houses, there'd be a lot more debris travelling over their roads than from one person building one big house.

2011-03-23 08:09:58 AM
You know, I'm as much of a "hate on the rich" guy as the next plebeian; but if the guy bought the land, he should be able to do whatever the fark he wants with it. It's not like he's putting in an oil drilling rig or a chemical plant or something.

I really couldn't possibly care less that the other rich people nearby are distraught that someone richer than them is building something they don't like, but when you can say that an 80,000 square foot development is "just a normal Mediterranean-style house" with a straight face you have clearly lost all sense of perspective.
