Sure, they all look rediculous. But at least they look ALIVE. they don't look dead yet. Those people are in their 20's and still look YOUNG. Try to find someone in their 20s today who isn't already trying to look younger or looks 20 years older than they are. It's very strange.

GeeksAreMyPeeps: As I was going through the photos, my impression was that half of these looked exactly like the mall near me at that time (Smith Haven Mall on Long Island).

That picture at the end of the kids in the football jackets suggests it might be. My mall was probably the closest to Kings Park.

Im from Long Island and I was born in 1990, and even I can recognize this is Smith Haven Mall.



This is the plaza in the middle intersection of the mall.



And this was taken right outside of Macy's. I immediately recognized that brickwork, since I worked there last year.

Seeing these pics makes me remember what the mall looked like when I was in kindergarten lol

bandy: I'd also like to point out that most of his subjects are very young. (Yes, I realize that there are very fat young kids now (and there were even a few back when I was a kid, before the Intarwebz were invented))

Back then, most malls did not have rules about groups of teenagers congregating, and the malls actually tried to attract teens with arcades and stores that appealed to them (Spencers Gifts, B Dalton and Waldenbooks, KB Toys, record stores, etc.)

Now it's 5 kinds of foot locker, a lot of women's clothes, a seasonal store or two (calendars, halloween costumes, or something), 5 cell phone kiosks, and a lot of empty storefronts.

Grunge was very limited until about 94 or so. The majority were big hair types well into the mid 90s. You could even find big hair girls in ripped jeans and tees at grunge shows. Also, major area dependent.

call them fat if you want but those girls are positively svelte in most areas of the US today.

Also, winter clothes make everyone look fat.

Funny, my 6 yr old knows the difference between a VHS, a DVD, and BluRay...

Of course, he's also playing the first Age of Empires and Pajama Sam games on the old computer, so retro-tech is not new to him.

/when introducing him to a new piece of tech (for him) we always explain it's age, where it came from and how it works, so he can use it properly and know what to expect out of it.

katfairy: My sister was accused of child abuse because she made her daughter help clean her own room. She was told flat out that making children do any sort of chores was "abusive."

Of course, this was by a woman who allowed her snowflake to walk up to adults and hit them without saying a word- unless it was to the adult who protested.

All the kids in my family did chores, and we whined about them as much as any kid would. We played outside with minimal supervision, and if the oldest kids were around (thirteen or so), then that was considered good enough to walk over the hill to the swimming hole or into the woods. We didn't walk to school because it was four miles away, but we were allowed to bike there once we hit sixth grade. Or fifth, if you biked with others. No computers, no cable TV, no video games until I was a teenager.

Yep, kids around my old town would do that too back in the day.

That one kid is still a cold case with the local PD. Paper ran a quick story about him a few months ago. Walked down the wooded road to a friends house and was never seen again.

The shopping mall was like the internet before computers. You could get anything you want, tons of commerce occurs everyday, it had awesome video games, you could check out the latest movie, but most people there are actually just hanging out, wasting time.

It might have just been a 1980s Texas/Oklahoma thing, but I remember the girls in high school using "Mane N' Tail" horse shampoo, back when you actually had to go to a tack shop to get it. It's still around, and I see it in beauty supply stores even here on the East coast, so I guess it went mainstream somewhere along the line.

Oh, and I see your "mall hair" and raise you this - here's my better half from our senior year of high school (1988):

That was when "nice girls" skipped the whole rebellious "mall hair" thing and went straight to "grandma at the mall" hair.
