They thought a few kind words and a half threat were going to make Ghadaffi stop?
Right now he's looking for every loophole he can use to kill people so he can keep his arse planted on the throne.

Never. The UN Sec. Council Resolution precludes ground troops or an invasion force.

Would UN forces going into Libya justify the American invasion of Iraq? Isn't the same thing going on? Did Saddam mass-kill a lot of his own people; and then America went in and curb stomped him.

How will Libya be different from Iraq after Gaddafi has been eliminated?

I'm not thrilled about the US engaging in yet another mid-east conflict. There is no consensus for intervention by the collective tards running European nations. When are we going to let them manage business in their own back yard? Is the sting of rising oil prices enough to risk yet more Americans?

I don't know about y'all, but I'm all for driving Prii, improving transportation infrastructure and expanding oil production in the US as the mid-east implodes.

Break off this relationship!

I'm thinking the UN never intended to do anything in Libya. Why pass a resolution when Qaddafi is already at the door of Benghazi? Even without planes, his armor and artillery is vastly superior to what the rebels have, and a military victory is a formality. By passing a resolution, though, the UN gets to save face because now they can say, "We were ready to help, but we just couldn't get our forces there in time."

This

The forces involved needed to be able to get that into effect quickly. With this pause, they are going to push as hard as they can to mix in with rebels and civilian targets.

Benghazi is going to be a bloodbath.

It's a MiG-23 (pictured below). The Su-24 has a wider front fuselage and shorter distance between wing and horizontal stabilizers.

What?

You don't bomb airfields in a no-fly zone. The whole point isn't to destroy the enemy's airborne assets like in a "traditional" war, its to prevent them from being used.

Modern western fighters would have a field day with antiquated Soviet aircraft (Gulf War I and the IAF come to mind) should they try to intercept patrol aircraft, and NATO air forces are more than capable of effective SEAD should Libya decide to start launching SAMs or AA.

Or, help the rebels who up until a week or so ago looked like they had a good shot of pulling this off, so if\when they do come to power, they go, "hey, the americans aren't so bad, they did us a solid and let us sort this out on our own with some limited help from them"

and not:

"well we are in power now, and you know what, fark the americans, they stood around while we got our asses kicked, clearly they were in cohoots with ghadaffi"

This is what they decided. The opposition asked for exactly this. The Arab league coupled with the UN on this one, and will be supporting operations with France, England, and the US. We're not taking the lead on this operation, either.

"The UN" is not a singular entity. The United Nations is made up of over two hundred member states, each of which can express its interests, sponsor resolutions, and vote. The Security Council resolution to institute a no-fly zone was sponsored by Lebanon, not by the Secretary-General or any other bureaucrat. Certain nations want to intervene, others don't - France, for instance, has recognized the rebels as the legal government of Libya. This isn't something you do if you're just trying to save face.

The fact that a consensus was reached at all, with the Chinese and Russian vetoes on the Security Council, means that the international community is actually behind something. If you're going to blame anyone, at least blame someone with the power to act. The US, for dragging its feet, maybe - but not an institution whose sole real power is to "write stern letters".

1/10

Nice try, but this was a multi-national UN resolution. The US has no desire to go in on our own, why do you think we were sitting back an watching for over a month?

2011-03-19 10:22:32 AM
The question is, who was flying it, and who shot it down. seeing conflicting info.

Rebel aircrew, pro-Daffy forces shot it down
Rebel aircrew, rebel forces accidentally shot it down

In such a chaotic, non-trained situation, I could easily see a US/UK/French aircraft being shot down by some rebel beanhead with a concept of 'aircraft...must shoot it'.

The untrained fools manning these guns really don't have the concept of shoot that one, not these ones down just yet. And obviously no IFF.

No one's stopping you Fark internet tough guys from getting boots on the ground. Go for it. Jump on a plane then, go to Libya. Join a side and pick up a rifle. I'm sure your inexperience, lack of combat training and your overall pluck will keep you alive. Oh, and the fact you're an American (or any westerner) would be deeply appreciated on either side, because the side you choose will have a fair and balanced view of your countries incursions and support of various governments over the years.....you don't get it? Do you? You just don't get it.
