This is deep blue hero stuff.

Good find,Subby.

The story is pretty harrowing and shocking, but I'm more shocked by the fact that his last moments are available for sale as an MP3 on Amazon. WTF?

I don't think NPR put it there, but the fact that someone out there did makes me stabby.

OK ModMins, I try not to biatch too much ..

But MISC?

The man is a damned HERO. Doesn't matter what side his bosses worked for.

The Astronauts and Cosmonauts risked, and many gave all in what was not just a "space race" but the further the achievements of all mankind.

As the story states, he went, believing he would die, so as to prevent that fate from befalling another.

Why did they have to post a photo of this poor soul's remains?
Couldn't he be afforded a little dignity?

A good mortician could have made him more presentable for the viewing.

I would have to say that, if there is an afterlife, he would not mind... so long as it led to knowledgeable people speaking truth to power when its on the line.

/Why yes, I would have fired every upper level manager at Morton Thiokol, but this is not the thread for that biatch.

The hero tag is reserved for people performing their job descriptions and politicians who say something that people wanted to hear.

Yeah, I just hate those ultra-hardcore anti smoking ads.

In all seriousness that was hard to finish reading (let alone listen to and I don't understand a word of Russian). At least the guys on the Kursk had a bottle of Stoli to pass around at the end. I hope Komarov was still allowed entry into Russian Val Hallah sober.

I believe the point is not an issue of dignity as we see funerals. I believe it shows what he suffered because of the ineptness and lockstep around the launch.

Good points. I think "sad" or "scary" would have applied, to, considering the sound file of his last words.

Heh, reminds me of my wife's attempt to "dress up" a horribly charred pot roast she once made. She spooned some sort of horrible "sauce" all over it, so it was charred...and soggy. Glad they didn't do that to this poor soul.

"I'm not going to make it back from this flight."

He'll die instead of me. We've got to take care of him

Rusyaev asked, Why not refuse? According to the authors, Komarov answered: "If I don't make this flight, they'll send the backup pilot instead." That was Yuri Gagarin. Vladimir Komarov couldn't do that to his friend.

Wow, that's what you call a friend.

Meanwhile, in the United States, we were told that the astronauts on the Challenger died instantly; and anyone who claimed they were still alive for some time after was ridiculed.

I guess it's only ok to admit 'instant death' is a crock, if the 'knowing you're going to die and not a damn thing you can do about it' happens to somebody else, preferably an enemy.

My dad always used to tell me this story of listening into a cosmonaut's last transmission as his craft burned up in orbit -- I always thought he was pulling my leg. He worked in air force intelligence back in the late 1960's and early 1970's. :\

It looks like it says 'came', past tense, from that angle. Wonder why the past tense was chosen, instead of the present? Or is it just the angle?

Russians are brave, stoic, and fatalistic. Komorov had balls to choose to die rather than let his friend and the first man in space, hero of the USSR, bite it for no reason othre than some party member toady was afraid to tell his boss bad news.

There are multiple lessons for us all here.

Well, see, that flight was going to have problems even if it hadn't been for all the other issues surrounding the launch. We don't even have elements on the periodic table of sufficient density to describe just how heavy and pendulous this man's balls were.

Dying to perform your duty to your country can be a heroic thing.
Dying in service to all mankind is pretty much a sure thing.
Dying to spare the life of a friend. I'm not sure we ever had words to adequately describe that.

Very similar to the pressure put on NASA to launch Challenger in January 1986 when so many engineers argued against launching because of frozen "o" rings.
