One Bad Apple: I don't think the guy understands how the "no-fly zone" thing works. All weather day or night air DOMINANCE. That's kind of our thing. If we do this not a single Libyan aircraft will see it's next sunrise. SAMs or AAA will fire exactly once and then join the Libyan air force.

Doesn't he know the meme?

Not particularly useful against an insurgency. But don't forget the implication.

Yes, not useful against an insurgency...Pretty farking overkill against the Libyan Air Forces.

I wonder if Britain will stab us in the back again so BP can get an oil contract or two?

I still haven't forgotten how they angled to get that f*ckhead terrorist released.

My guess is, the Brits want a piece of this so they will have more bargaining power when it's all over so BP can get what it wants.

I mean... these things are expensive, and we REALLY want an excuse to use them in an area where we don't risk having them crash into China.

His massive navy consisting of patrols boats, one submarine, and a tiny merchant marine fleet should prove quite the challenge!

Even France could brush that aside.

To anyone wandering into this thread thinking that it is current and hasn't looked below:

The UN Security Council vote already passed with 10 yes votes and 5 abstains. The resolution was not only for a no-fly zone but to take "all measures necessary" to protect civilians, with the stipulation that no occupying force sets foot on Libyan soil.

Thoguh: SnakeLee: Hopefully the Libyans who get these orders stand down.

I don't think that peole who have been totally cool with bombing their own countrymen are going to have a problem with shooting at ships under another country's flag.

In all honesty though, the no fly zone is basically an act of war against Libya, so what would you expect him to do, sit back and say "That's cool"?

I mean, he's a batshiat crazy murderous asshead, but Libya is a sovereign nation and taking out their air defenses, even for very good reason, is still essentially the world declaring war on Libya.

Well, when the world declares war on you, wouldn't you think it prudent to take a moment and reassess your position?

Depends on how you define "declare war". If you mean acknowledge that it would be a military action, then yes. Get Congress to sign on to the actions of a body that the US is a part of? Not so clear.

infernal instigator: Correct me if i'm wrong, but in order to enact a no-fly, don't you need to declare war?

The President is Commander-in-Chief of all US forces and under the War Powers Resolution has the authority to commit a certain number of troops to military action for a certain amount of time without congressional approval, let alone a declaration of war.

Just who are the rebels anyway, and why are they so much better than Gaddafi?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Gaddafi get his neck stretched for Lockerbie, but I doubt the rebels are all rainbows and unicorns, like the Star Wars rebels.

Removing Saddam let a djinni out of the bottle and got lots of Iraqis and Americans killed for what exactly? Gas is 3.75 a gallon. Yeah, we put the beatdown on Al Qaeda when they went head to head with our ground forces. What will appear once Gaddafi is removed?

Why don't we try to let one of the other world powers turn Libya into Vermont?

Do you mean one of the world powers like the 10 other ones that voted for this? Are you people even reading the articles? It's a no fly zone, we are expressly not allowed to have troops on the ground. I would be willing to bet that 90%+ of all allied casualties will be a result of friendly fire or accidents. Also, we are there to protect the civilians, not to fight a war for the rebels.

Get someone who is good with impersonations to do a recording.

Program the recording into the Ronald Reagan robot from the Hall of Presidents at Disney.

Send video of robot Reagan threatening to kick Gaddafi's butt again.

I'm pretty sure Gaddafi probably still has nightmares of Reagan coming after him.

With all the technology at our disposal, the world still can't figure out the correct spelling of Gaddafi's (Kaddafi? Kadafi? Qaddafi?) friggin name...

SnakeLee: Hopefully the Libyans who get these orders stand down. Gaddafi basically sounds like he is on a suicide mission right now. It would be atrocious if a bunch of civilians and lower level Libyan soldiers were killed because Gaddafi wanted to go out a martyr. Certainly if one American was seriously wounded that would be too much, as well.

Yeah, shooting at rebels is one thing--they have a very limited ability to shoot back. Going against US forces is quite another--any sane loyalist Libyan pilots will get over rebel territory and eject.

If the pilots run away the planes won't get in the air and thus won't be hit.

They sat and waited for UN approval... heck, they even told Gaddafi to leave peacefully. what bloodthirsty monsters they must be.

The US has shown an enormous amount of restraint in all of this. If Reagan or Bush 41/43 were in office, this would have already been done weeks ago.
