Because, even though levels will be low, it is still good to measure levels, if for nothing else but to catalogue the radiation levels for historical and research reasons

erm. wouldn't you?

obvious tag surrenders?

2011-03-17 02:48:43 PM
it could be you know to monitor radiation. so they have proof that there is no danger no matter how hard cnn and fox try to scare you into believing otherwise so that they can sell more ad time.

6000 miles of ocean...it's going to be ok.

2011-03-17 02:48:47 PM
Why wouldn't we monitor it?

2011-03-17 02:49:13 PM
However unfortunate it is for the people living in Japan it is one hell of an opportunity for research. The data is free, you just have to go and collect it. Hence the monitors. That and we have to know when to start issuing the evacuation orders for the west coast.

What are the exposure risks from our fusion facilities compared alongside the more traditional fission plants?

Almost never hear about the fusion plants popping... For that matter, when was the last time we heard about loss of containment at a SCEP-II plant (singularity confined energy production). Seems like it's time to retire the old tech and move on.

2011-03-17 02:49:51 PM
I, for one, support our new radioactive overlords.

2011-03-17 02:50:13 PM
...Why is this a bad idea?

Or in itself, indicative of a problem? You won't know a problem exists if you have no data.

angry_scientist: Well if they didn't deploy them, people would biatch too

They're deploying them because of exactly this. It's the first line of TFA too. And if they DIDN'T deploy them, well then it would be a government conspiracy because they don't want you to know "how bad it really is." But of course this is a gov conspiracy too, see it just proves they know it's worse than they're saying.
/So I guess the moral of the story is FEAR PANIC REACTION

2011-03-17 02:56:01 PM
It has been foretold:

'When I was but a child, my aged grandmother told me a story from the old country, which contained an ancient warning, "...for you see, it is said that when Hell is full, the dead shall walk the Earth, smelling very bad and taking all of the better minimum wage jobs, which will raise the inflation rate unsupported by increased consumerism; which, while having a positive effect on the balance of trade, may impact the renoberation of long-term bond yields." '

This presents a great opportunity to monitor how radiation spreads in a nuclear emergency. If we weren't doing all the testing we possibly can, we'd be fools.

That said, assuming that there are NO risks to the US mainland right now would be irresponsible.

It's called data collection. Then, if the people of California suddenly turn all liberal, Faux Newz will have talking points based on actual scientific evidence.

One of my friends, who is an RF "enthusiast" (nut) and measures every band of RF he can, and who also has his own geiger counter to measure radioactive decay, just got his supply of Potassium Iodide from mail order yesterday.

The hilarious thing is that it showed measurable radiation itself - whatever potasium or iodine source they used to create the potassium iodide was already radiating.

He's pissed, obviously, and now he's ordering more from like 20 different places.

It would certainly be ironic if thousands of people got cancer from radioactive potassium-iodide supplements, taken to avoid radioactive iodine.

Haha, and won't YOU feel stupid when the redwood trees mutate from the radiation and ENSLAVE YOU! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

2011-03-17 02:57:06 PM
You mean our government is taking precautionary measures to monitor the radiation levels along the west coast so that we have our own, accurate, information to base decisions on?!?!?!? OMG!!!!!!

2011-03-17 02:57:31 PM
Meh, I don't see what everyone is getting worked up about. The amount of radiation you're likely to receive in the US is equivalent to building a treehouse out of microwaves with all the doors facing inward, smashing all the glass windows and then cooking stacks of dvds at full power while you're inside the microwave house and also you're blending a thousand glow sticks with some water from a nuclear reactor and drinking it.

So, basically nothing to worry about.

well exposure to the sun can cause burns and skin cancer. also it can interfer with electronic communications. also, i wouldn't stand too close to an h-bomb test.

There isn't any cause for alarm right now.

There is also a huge event unfolding in the Pacific that a lot of people are monitoring and many are capitalizing with incessant fear mongering.

The increased sensors are part of the expanding system keeping an eye on this situation, and will raise the actual alarm if necessary. This development too, has now become fear mongered.

I don't see what is difficult to understand about any of that.

I know big government can't do anything right those monitors will probably blow up and kill people.
