I guess these geniuses don't know your heart runs on a sodium/potassium chemical pump. Fark up the balance and you gonna have problems.

Clearly they should have used more sun block.

The pledge was transferred to an intensive care ward and hospitalized for four days to treat an electrolyte imbalance caused by consuming large amounts of sodium, The Daily Progress newspaper reported.

jesus farking christ on a pogo stick... why do we always have to explain these things...

Subby... THE BODY IS A FAIRLY FINE-TUNED MACHINE; THERE'S SOME ROOM FOR DEVIATION FROM THE NORM BUT IT'S FINITE.

If that guy spent FOUR farkING DAYS in the hospital for electrolyte imbalance? CHRIST. He could've died.

/go drink as much water as you can until you pass out
//then get back to us with your test results
/willing to bet that subby is an agw denier as well

Hell, you don't even need to drink the whole bottle. Chug a bunch of soy sauce and you can make yourself barf horrible dark vomit, thereby nicely faking your way out of school if your mom buys it.

I think everyone up-thread didn't get the joke. It's not that we don't think soy sauce will kill you, it has everything to do with "Why the fark were they using soy sauce? Is there a shortage of shiatty vodka in Charlottesville these days?"

/I've seen a LOT of UVA students drinking nasty cheap vodka at football games - the kind that makes 5 O'clock look top-shelf

Some people have allergies to the stuff.

2011-03-13 07:38:30 PM
But, yeah, drinking a bottle of soy sauce probably requires a five-gallon chaser of water.

Back in my day, they had to drink a bottle of everclear, run around campus, uphill both ways, in the snow, NAKED. Light weights.

There are people out there that would do things that are humiliating and sometimes extremely dangerous just so they can be a member of a fraternity? What kind of farked up stupid loser does one have to be to partake in such nonsense? Idiots.

Horseshiat. I can drink these little farkers under the table on that shiat- I've made people totally flip out from drinking vodka straight. I don't see any of those sorosititues or trustifarians drinking anything but top shelf- unless they "ironically" drink PBR or something. Saw some frat boys loading up mommy and daddy's Range Rover full of it once. TEE HEE YOU GUIZE ARE SO COOL!

They don't understand, see. Spend a few years in Wisconsin and you'll find out what drinking's really like.

Tar Heels suck. But thanks for beating Miami.

Last year I caught a stomach bug that so dehydrated me my heart just upped and stopped working properly. Last thing I remember was it speeding up really, really fast and then I passed out. My wife thought I had a heart attack. Took them two days in the ER to get it back down to normal and they shocked me once in the ambulance.

Electrolytes: serious business.

HAHAHAHA! I was just talking about this earlier.

One day bored at work I decided to have some fun and told a coworker I would drink a full bottle of soya sauce for $20. He was all over it. So everyone gathers around and I pour out the first cup and try to down it. I got about halfway through and had to slow down because it was so salty. By the time I got halfway through the second cup (about half the bottle) my guts started rumbling. Off to the sh*tter I went. Over the next couple of hours I essentially pissed out my ass about ten times.

My co worker gave me two bucks for the brave attempt.

When I was a freshman in college, I got up late one night to use the head when I saw another person in my dorm trying to wash a variety of condiments and canned meat products off of his skin and hair.
I asked him, point blank, "Why do you put yourself through all of this?" He didn't really have an answer.
I suspect that, 13 years later, if I asked him again, he still wouldn't know.

A little hazing isn't that bad, it even builds character. It's just when you start putting things in the kid's bodies (lots of alcohol, water, salt, soy sauce, plungers, hockey sticks, wine bottles, tennis shoes w/ cleats, bottles of shampoo, tupperware, cocks, the complete works of T.S. Eliot, etc.") that we need to draw the line. Making the pledges do the dishes is fine.

2011-03-13 09:04:33 PM
Frats will find a way to kill people with the hazing rituals one way or another. You put on the pressure so that they don't force recruits to poison themselves with with something politically incorrect like alcohol, they'll find something else. Soy sauce, milk, dish detergent, whatever. All in the name of "fun" and "bonding" they'll find a way to torture you until you die.

This looks more like a reason to put the soy sauce company on trial than the pledge. Seriously, soy sauce? That stuff is considered innocuous by everyone. Subjectively, it's like ODing on oranges or something. Slap on a warning label if it is that dangerous.

2011-03-13 09:05:08 PM
I did this once, I did it on a dare. I got my dinner for free because my friend bet me I couldn't do it and I made his date almost puke. What really got her was I got another bottle from the next table and used a generous amount on my dinner.

Dude, the prime rule of toxicology is EVERYTHING is poisonous. Only the dose makes a thing not a poison.
