After all they have been through you'd think they would use less devastating footage.

Wow. So sad.

It almost feels like Mother Nature said "OK, you think you know how to build earthquake-resistant buildings, huh? Try this."

Amazing how many full houses were just washed away.

Those areas are never known for being bastions of solid construction for homes (no basements, a lot of time no real foundations), but still amazing how many things were just "washed away"

Don't forget it is a huge salt water lake too. Honestly, we won't be able to see the real damage done by the destruction of fresh water to the countryside until later in the spring. Even areas that didn't get tsunami damage likely have had their water table changed dramatically. What is visible is only part of the damage.

Fascinating yet terrible photos.

2011-03-13 09:53:30 AM
Well, at least it looks like the tsunami brought a new rail line to the airport. So I guess the news ain't all bad.

The last pic is the most telling. It appears the water topped the rise between the two small coves. Just looking at it, it appears to be about 30'. That is a lot of water.

There are no words....

Wait for the New Madrid zone to buckle and you won't have to wonder.

Not for nothing, but you'd think they'd figure out how to get the same position for the nuclear plant one... kinda hard to truly tell what's up if you go from top view to side view.

I was thinking those were rice paddy fields floating on the water before.

Not to mention new warehouses at Ishinomaki in Miyagi.
But other than that, what have the Tsunamis ever done for us?

Holy crap. One of the airplanes at the airport is missing. Fortunately, the others were unretouched.

If you have Google Earth, go here and click the link to download the updated KML file, then you can see all the new satellite photos right in Google Earth:

And there will be a thing on the sidebar to switch between old and new.

I honestly can't tell if you're making a bad joke or trying to imply a conspiracy.

What happens with the aquatic life during a tsunami? Does it scram out or ride it out and end up on land somewhere?

The imagery might be playing some tricks on us, though---keep in mind that the "After" image was taken in winter, with snow & frost on the ground, and trees are browned and leafless. Not sure I see any sign of water having hit the treeline.

In the "Ishinomaki in Miyagi" picture, the third one from the bottom, why is there a big blue building in the "after" picture that isn't there in the "before" picture? How long ago was the "before" pic taken? Or did the tsunami bring it there?
