I'm not convinced it started off as a religious conflict. More like tribalism, realized through or manifested as a religious conflict. Clans intermingling - a story as old as written history.

TFA: "[A] Muslim mob attacked thousands of Christians protesting against the burning of a Cairo church last week. Muslims torched the church..."

MSNBC headline: "11 killed in Muslim-Christian clashes in Egypt"

So, Muslims burn down the Christians' place of worship, and when the Christians come together to protest its destruction, Muslims start shooting up the crowd. But since some of the Christians had the audacity to shoot back, our news outlets distill this down to a morally-equivalent case of "Muslim-Christian clashes".

Humanity fights when we have different religions.

We fight when two factions have the same religion.

We fight when no one bothers showing up to church anymore (think "Catholic" Irish and "Protestant" Ulster Irish)

Pigs like rolling around in mud; rabbits like making more rabbits; humanity just likes fightin. Religion occasionally smooths our rough edges, but is mostly irrelevant, almost never a real cause.

AND I WILL FIND YOU AND HUNT YOU DOWN AND FIGHT YOU IF YOU DISAGREE

Yeah that's usually how it goes.

Loved an headline a while back about how '200 died in Xian-Muslim violence in Nigeria' or somesuch, and when you read the article you basically realize that Muslims with machetes entered a village and the 200 that died were 198 Xians.

Still, you know, gotta look fair.

Funny, I was going to say that it is more like "The Pajama Game"

All the workers from Egypt (the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory) were clamoring for better living conditions (7 and a half cent raise) and less corruption at the top from Mubarak ("Old Man" Hasler). They all gathered at Tahir Square (Hernando's Hideaway) to press for their demands. Suprisingly, what most would normally consider enemies, the Muslims and Christians (Sid and Babe), actually come together when the Christians protect the praying Muslims from pro-govt' goons. Eventually, Mubarak gives in and resigns (Hasler consents to the 7.5 cent raise) and everyone, umm, lives, uhh, happily? every after?

I guess it falls apart at the end, but you see what I mean.

So, Muslims burned a Christian church, because they were angry that a Muslim was dating a Christian, and now a Muslim mob attacked a crowd of Christians who were protesting the burning of their church? And all this after another Christian church got bombed, and a Christian man was murdered and his elderly wife shot by a Muslim. Sounds like this whole "clash" was rather one sided to me. I'm not a Christian, but I don't blame them for protesting, considering how they're being treated. "Religion of peace" my ass.

That was my point, too. The other Christian church got bombed, which also killed people, and then an off-duty cop shot and killed an elderly Christian man and wounded his wife. This whole thing sounds much more like "Muslims continue assaults on Christians" than it does a "Muslim-Christian clash."

Usually, I have little use for Christianity, but it definitely sounds here like they're the victims. They're obviously a minority in these countries, and one it sounds like the Muslims are trying very hard to stamp out. For a people ready to cry "oppression!" every time they see a cartoon they don't like, they sure like to bomb and kill minorities they themselves don't like.
