No, not that!

This was one of the many moments that taught me that the Japanese can create some amazing premises, but can't end a story to save their lives. Not ONE.

I feel your pain, that last episode is pretty much the definition of 'WTF?'.

But there are a number of examples of series that knew how to end properly. The ending to Cowboy Bebop was particularly excellent in my book. Trigun, Full Metal Alchemist(both), S-Cry-Ed, all had worthy endings. Of course, my experience with anime is hardly extensive. I'm sure there are other examples.

At least they didn't keep dragging Evangelion out because they didn't know how to end it *cough* bleach *cough*

The TV series ending was not originally intended to be like that at all, it was what they came up with due to budget and time constraints. The End of Evangelion movie is how it was supposed to end.

/also, bonus points for subby if you watch this video after you masturbate over your comatose friend

So...this was the scene after Shinji locked himself in the room with a comatose Asuka, right?

I don't get the headline. They were saying "congratulations" not "Stop staring at your sister".

Actually, I've seen a few that had reasonably well done endings. Code Geasse, Eureka 7, and Macross frontier come to mind.

The problem is two fold. In the case of eva, gunbuster, alien nine and a few others, they've had the budget cut short and had to tie off another seasons worth of events in one show and no money.
So you get episodes made with black and white frames, streetlight montages, and end cards of main plot characters inexplicably sitting in a pool of their own blood.

The other problem is they have a habit of buying next seasons hot Anime plot from manga that aren't finished yet. While the show is guaranteed to be popular for its short run, they end up having to yank the ending out of their posterior. Often ignoring whatever arc the author had in mind and tying off complicated storylines with an incomprehensible series of events.
Meanwhile the author of the manga keeps going for volumes afterwards to a perfectly reasonable conclusion.

Its all the problems of an American TV show plus the language barrier and the complication of having to animate things months in advance of knowing how the audience will receive it.
I'd say its amazing they can produce as many shows as they do with a conclusion of any kind.

In the US, our cartoons simply go off the air...

The ending of FLCL worked because it made all the strangeness (well, most of the strangeness) that came before make sense in retrospect.

I remember watching that for the first time. I couldn't hear much of it because my brain was too busy screaming, "WHAT? WHAAAAT?? WTF? WTF? DID SOMEONE DOSE ME? AM I ON ACID??"

I was under the impression that the dude who did Evangelion was going through some pretty serious mental issues at the time, and that was part of the reason why the show ended up being so strange up.

The problem with the TV run of Eva is that the director went completely nucking futs. And it shows.

Saborlas: The problem with the TV run of Eva is that the director went completely nucking futs. And it shows.

Uhhh...you realize that Eva was created while Hidekai Anno (creator, writer, & director) was in an insane asylum, right? He was always nucking futs.

For the most part, the Macross series' have had solid endings (i'm obviously biased, though).

If you want anime with definite endings, you need to look at older series, like before the mid-early 90's. Silent Moebius is a good example, as is Record of Lodoss War (which is criminally underrated, IMO).

LawrencePerson: The ending of FLCL worked because it made all the strangeness (well, most of the strangeness) that came before make sense in retrospect.

I loved the metaphorical nature of FLCL. Altho half the things they did simply because "it was cool" (no, really. That was the directors reasoning). So there probably was no deeper meaning to most of it.
They took a similar tack in Diebuster (gunbusters sequel). Another well tied off short series.

For EVA I think they actually had a proper ending in mind. You don't animate an epic battle inside the geofront to its shocking conclusion, only to switch to poetry for the last half hour and then walk away.
I really hope the rebuild/remake gets around to explaining it out fully.

To be fair, even among anime studios, Gainax is known for their WTF. It's even a tropes entry.Gainax Ending (new window)

When I had been dating my wife for about a year a friend got me into Eva (that you Napster). Saw the whole series, then Death and Rebirth, then End of Eva. E.P.I.C.

I knew I would watch these kinds of shows over the years so I decided that I was going to have my girlfriend watch the entire series without warning her at all. In Japanese.

So after her and her brother have watched the entire TV series we rented and played the DVD's of D&R and EoE. Nothing was said for about 5 minutes after EoE was done. The wife looked over at me and said "... damn". Aint ever heard shiat about Anime in our 12 years together.

msa4.files.wordpress.com

/we then watched Cowboy Bebop in it's entirety
