"We should consider legalizing the production, distribution and sale of drugs," he wrote on his blog in August. "Radical prohibition strategies have never worked. Legalizing in this sense does not mean drugs are good and don't harm those who consume them. Rather we should look at it as a strategy to strike at and break the economic structure that allows gangs to generate huge profits in their trade, which feeds corruption and increases their areas of power."

Hmmmm.... try this, or continue wasting money on locking up citizens?

Oh noes! Just imagine the horror if some college students decided to start taking drugs. We won the war on drugs back in the 80s, we can't let them get a foothold again.

If we just keep at it, I'm sure we'll change human nature any minute now.

His administration's economic plan was simple, just like the GOP's health care plan. Instead of "don't get sick" it was "Go to America"

Our 'War on Drugs' is getting thousands of his citizens killed and we're snubbing him?

That's just how to NOT be 'the greatest country in the world'.

Yes, because legalization will totally cause Mexican society to break down, forcing the cartels against the government and killing thousands of innocent civilians in the cross fire as the country explodes into violence that threatens to spill over across the border...

...Oh, wait.

2011-03-02 06:19:01 PM
It will never happen.

In order for the people to submit to government authority, they must be provided with a menace: a monster, boogieman, hobgoblin, et cetera. The threat must be credible, the enemy must be strong.

If drugs are legal, all you would see would be empty shells of humans, lining up every day for their ration, much like the vagrants which already infest every American city.

But the production cost of drugs is only pennies a dose, so you couldn't make any money off it. People would still b*tch but they wouldn't be scared.

There's probably a million parasites making money off this thing; you think thowe bastards would ever actually work?

Just the other day my 12 year old, Red Ribbon Week indoctrinated daughter asked me why we call addiction a disease and then put people in jail for it. And I don't run around discussing the War on "Drugs" in front of my kids, because I don't think they are ready to confront that level of cognitive dissonance and its ramifications.

Was hoping that right after Mr Obama is sworn in again he'd announce fundamental changed to the drug war, but since he converted to the GOP I'm no longer holding my breath.

I'll think about this, and get right back to you.

I almost support full legalization and distribution by the government. They could control the doseage amount pretty simple (swipe your card at the dispensory) would generate jobs for people to grow and harvest the drugs, sell them to a private company that processes and sells them according to regulation standards just like other drug companies.

On the down side, the government would lose all that money that goes to "fighting the war on drugs".

Dos Equis is the only drug you need and the only drug Mexico endorses.

So don't try; if they're smart enough to grasp the disparity, they're smart enough to figure it out pretty shortly. Question is, how badly do you want to retain credibility in thier eyes once they inevitably do figure it out?

Any boomers not completely disgusted by politics are either easily led fools, or sold out their ideology as quickly as they could find buyers long ago.

Well if 'drug dealer' were considered decent previous job experience more people might put it on their resumes once it becomes legal.

Maybe rename it to something like 'chemical enhancement professional' or 'addiction occurrence specialist'. The more legitimate sounding, the better.

I agree with their decision. By cancelling it, they made the news. Nobody ever heard of this school before, now a few people have. So it's a victory for the school. Fox gets his views on legalization heard by a lot more people. UCSD gets good press for hosting the talk. Everybody is happy. Life is good.
If the moral outrage of 6 billion people who read the story turns out to be the key turning point in the legalization of drugs then this school will be in the history books forever. Wait, what was the name of the school again?

I wonder why, if it's such a good idea, he didn't do it while he was President? Not that the man would have a double standard between what he thinks we should do, and what he did or anything...

You under-estimate the right wing propaganda machine. A unilateral move by Mexico would start the drum beat for a(nother) war with Mexico. We'd hear a cascade of reasons to invade Mexico from illegals crossing the border to pollution to corruption.

They already think that NATO's been undermined by the Dutch because the country allows marijuana.

Yes. Critical thinking! Finally someone has mentioned this...

Mexico is crap-hole because there are no White people there.

It has nothing to due with illegal drugs or being "poor," even though it's an oil-exporting country. Until you realize this, Mexico will continue to descend into chaos.

Fox is a total retard!!!

1) The problem with the drug cartels grew up under his presidency
2) If he really cared about legalizing drugs, he should have done something while he had the power to begin with.

2011-03-02 07:09:56 PM
But we can't pull out of the drug war, or we'll lose face!

We should also go back to Vietnam and fight a war there, because pulling out made us look bad.

Power? What is this power you speak of. The Governor of Mexico has only as much as power as the man in La Casa Blanca gives him, and no more.

I don't generally let people know I'm ignoring them, but this troll has the subtly of a brick to the face, which is probably what you deserve for it. I'm tempted to call it more of a threadshait; it's not funny, adds nothing, and any bites you do get will just be off-thread and boring.
