Dumski - Nice going on your 3-digit win in the "Not To Scale" thread. I never would have expected that to nail 100 votes. Just goes to show you that Farkers are like bears and cats. Totally unpredictable.

Thank you. I am completely aghast at the vote results too. Like StainedGlassRuby above, the idea to fruition was much less than I would normally spend on a shop. Go figure. I'll take it though.

I think it was bighairyguy or odenen that said that the pudgy little fella could become a new meme (if he wasn't so apparently psycho). That photo is another sad attempt at propaganda, but the faces, the faces....

I've never posted here in the forum before, but I have to say, some of those "farkisms" you all came up with are pretty spectacular. My personal favorites of the bunch were definitely  Herb Utsmelz's Ugly-Ass Baby Christ and Because People in power are Stupid's Boobies Declaration. Eleventy billion points to you all.

I love me a good DPRK thread as much as the next guy (or problably even more than the next guy*), but I think we should try to dial down the number of KJU-related O's, for fear of overdosing on the topic.

*Look at Moravius' or "Eric Lafforgue's stuff on Flickr for Best Korea at its bestest.

I do not disagree with your observation. I, in fact, stated so one of the previous contests, "Too much Kim lately". Yet on it went. I simply am following a lead. Some pictures are just asking for it.

Grampy, since your audience will primarily be Farkers, you should probably aligh your NSFW filter with Fark's.  The Attention-whore-doing-a-handstand and the drunk-girl-passed-out-on-a-picnic-table fail the no thong/string bikinis allowed test.

Also, you have a typo in "Reaves, Keanu".

Finally, Sharbat Gula shows up in the Gs as well as in the Ss.  While I am not fluent in Pashtun, I think her last name is Gula.

This has nothing to do with Photoshop but I think it will be of interest to many of the people who populate this forum.
A short while ago Mental Floss asked the question: "When did you go online?"  I answered, truthfully, "early '80's with TRS-80 and external 1200 baud modem to C-Serve."  I was just checking the forum when I had an epiphany:  That's not the first time I went online.  So, in the spirit of "Can you top this?" I give you my current response:

Answer: 1962 or '63.  I just remembered the IBM ATS System that I used to use (and fix.)   ATS stood for Automated Terminal System which consisted of 16 golf ball typewriters scattered around the building that would produce perfect copy documents.  It would also produce, automatically, justified output.  Your letter would look like a page of a book, with both right and left margins straight up and down.  The CPU was an IBM 1460 that had less power than my 7 year old cheapie cell phone.

I was also a user of the IBM Internal-Only V-Net which was world wide on VM from the late '70's.

Sorry to clutter things but I thought it might be fun.  I will humbly accept any and all brickbats, stomach punches, and whatever you care to send my way.

uglyonef: FWIW I looked for her in A for "Afghan Girl." Everybody knows who she is, I doubt that many know her name

Fixed. For future searches you might find using the tags works fairly well. I try to remember to give most things more than one tag, for example if you're looking for something from Star Wars, using the "Movie" tag brings up a lot of stuff, using the "SciFi" tag will narrow it down a bit, and "Star Wars" will bring it down even more.

  2013-04-09 09:35:59 PM

uglyonef: "When did you go online?"

I can't top your record, since I wasn't even born in the 60s.

Fall of '89.  I had a mainframe account at college for FORTRAN.  Apart from compiling trivial programs for my homework, I only used it to look for books at another college's library.  By '92, though I was ftp'ing the 53-diskette version of Slackware Linux during my CATIA classes.

uglyonef: I was also a user of the IBM Internal-Only V-Net which was world wide on VM from the late '70's.

Ah... I miss the user-firendliness of PROFS and OV/VM.  Not.

uglyonef: "When did you go online?"

I can't top that either.

First experience with computers was submitting programs on punch cards to the college IBM 360 in the mid 70's. Didn't actually get online until around 1988 with a Laser 128 (Apple IIe clone), 128K of memory, two 140kb floppy drives, and a 300 baud modem. Quickly set up my own Pro-DOS based BBS soon thereafter.

I''l jump in. In High school in 82, we had Radio Shack TRS-80's (affectionately called trash 80's) for the computer programming class. Ahhhh Basic. played lots of wormy, empire, and made up basic games and graphic animations. In the library though, they had a few Apple's II's I think. If you worked in the library or media center (film and video machine runners) like I did, after you took out or brought back projectors or old monster vhs machines, you got to "work" on the apples. I remember the parachute game, which I felt deja vu when I got my Ipod video that had the game on it.

  2013-04-10 12:04:14 AM
spring '61 punch cards and some intro class. then a gap til '83 - '84 and some IBM  ATs and PC clones at work. one was set up in sales with a western union interface that allowed for communications with others who had the same software. was supposed to facilitate reservations. don't remember is being real successful. i had a loaner IBM AT at home and could dial into our DEC digital mainframe. although mainframe may be an overstatement. it had those big disks you had to load and unload.

remember DOS and how if you were real tired late at night and formatting 5.25 floppies you could see Format C: Y N and hit Y? and the fun that was.

or be copying files on your bosses office manager's machine and type delete *.* and hit enter. yeah fun times. that machine never did recover from that.

dec '95 i bought my first computer. a IBM Aptiva. had a pentium100, 8MB of RAM and a 1.2GB HDD. within a year it had an evergreen K6 AMD 300 hz CPU, 64MB RAM and two HDDs. one a warranty replacement 2.00 GB and one a whopping 4.0GB western digital. that baby cost me $209 and worth every penny.

Before there is too much bragging about who's onion is bigger, there should be a definition of what "online" means. For the younger crowd it means www, not when "we" first laid our hands on a "computer". To the under 50 crowd we are dinosaurs. Still, it is fun to reminisce.
I remember first laying my hands on a video camera and recorder in 1975. That was intoxicating, and empowering. Hoo-ah!

  2013-04-10 01:01:23 AM
I think "online" was a reality a long time before anyone every strung 3 w's together and praised Al Gore for inventing the Intertubes.

So if you think "online" means communicating with people who are not near you using a computer, then things like Bitnet, CSNet and UseNet should suffice.  I just did some Google searches and found mildy embarrassing e-mail messages I sent back in 1983, archived for all eternity naturally.  Ugh...

I can't imaging the horrors the "grew up with Facebook" generation will have to face ~10-15 years from now.

Anybody remember Fidonet? Several locals put together a regional network with one guy who had a high speed satellite data feed. Everyone else chipped in to help him pay his access fees.  That was when "high speed" was anything above 2400 baud :)

Hmmm, I guess 1989 using the NCIC/NLETS (National Criminal Information Center/National Law Enforcement Terminal System) counts as going "online".  Back in those days we would use the system to send messages, which were actually emails I suppose, to various agencies and departments.  Usually very important things like Santa Clause sightings and inter agency softball games.

I am giving to understand it is primarily used for domestic spying and stalking potential dates these days.

Yup. My theory is playing out. The mysterious and slightly worrisome absence of Gwinny lines up with the stuttering and stumbling with the queue. Ergo, she was the beautiful feathered creature that kept the submissions flowing seamlessly, even though many of us were slain by the submission sword into redness.

Not that it has to do anything with PS, but I was wondering last night about the ages of current Farkers, thinking that most of us in the PSAEF are a little older (35+), but if Fark was still picking up the under 30 crowd, or has FB, Twitter and the like have drawn them away. Probably no real way to tell.  Also, I think Gwinny goes to France about this time of the year, so she is probably knee deep in the wine press and doesn't have time to mod.

Oh. Nice. Yearly? What a hardship to bear. When she gets back she needs to grab a few collars.

First and last time I was in France was at the Charles De Gaule Airport on January 21 1976, then Heathrow the same day. Saw the inaugural flight of the Concorde. Loudest takeoff I have ever heard, but what a magnificent site. I was on my way back from Nigeria where my parents went to be missionaries for the next 20 years. I finally was kicked out of the house.

So the traffic stats look legit, but the rest of the information is skewed at best. There are a whole hell-of-alot of truth stretchers on Fark and everywhere else on the intertubes, so other data is collected how? Trackers? I know not of these things..
Well they can't get my info. Heheh.

The trend line on search is depressing.

The way I understand it, it doesn't show that Fark's users are middle-aged nerd dudes, but that middle-aged nerd dudes are searching the word "Fark" on Google about 20 times fewer than during their all time high in what looks like autumn/winter 2004 (I blame people googleing "what the fark?!" after Bush got reelected).
The positive spin on this is that Fark users have figured out how to find the site without using Google.

Remember that time one website had to add a fat disclaimer saying some like "this isn't Facebook, this is an article about Facebook" to one of its articles?
That article had become the first Google result for "facebook login" and the article's comment section got flooded by comments complaining about Facebook's new design and that the old accounts weren't working anymore.
I guess I could use Google to find the Fark thread about it...

Not by a long shot. :)

One of my guiltiest wins (apologies to phugue) is this contest. I didn't have TF at the time and figured it would take some drastic measures to enter that contest after it went live and get the win.

It was a close one.

My first online experience was with Plodgy in '92.  Usenet was still fun then.

Going to the Audio Edit portion of the forum, are there any good, free audio editing programs out there?  Preferably of the multitrack variety.  The lapper I had with all the goodies is dead.  I've got a copy of SAW Pro somewhere, but that only works with WAV files so you've gotta convert MP3's and that's a pain in the buttocks.  Any help would be appreciated.

No we weren't. We appreciate you too. It's just that Gwinny is so loveable and efficient in her assignments. No need to grab your collar and give it a shake now that she is back. Please continue to gift TF to deserving farkers.  Thank you.

Well, ok.  She's also nicer than me.  I mean, not by much, but still.

Well, it's been a fun month. Thanks Eeek! for the gift of a month of TF! I submitted to a lot of PS contests. I had fun, and I even learned some useful things about workflow and techniques with my old and trusty photo-editing program.

I hope the user-generated content that I created (and hosted) was helpful to Fark. I like Fark (other than the trolls in the threads), and I think it's good for Fark to have lots of participation in the PS contests.

Ciao!

I downloaded Audacity and played with it a little last night.  Downloading Audition as I type this.  That, I think is the version I had on the old lapper.

SPAM used to amuse me, since it was novel to receive random, badly worded notes from strangers who in all likelihood were assuming fake names.  But I got jaded and it's been a long time since I did more then just flush all the garbage e-mail out of the SPAM folder every once in awhile.

But today I noticed one a subject line that made me laugh.  It proclaimed the exciting news that FINALLY "Passionate Ukrainian girls are ready to communicate with aliens !"

So I had to open the e-mail to see what when the UFO's had landed in the Ukraine and how the girls were going to talk to them.  The key seems be hidden in this sentence someplace "Women on the many letters and easy to open, that any, even the most humble can find as to correspond, lists you confident you will do it!" but I'm not bright enough to figure it out.

Last job was free drinks, perm job I got laid off from had free fruit juice and lemonade, but went downhill after they pulled those out.  I had one job that provided free hot chocolate mix, but got rid of it in a cost saving measure.  They kept the 9 different kinds of creamer though.  I went to Sam's Club and bought a box of the same mix they had (7¢ a pack) and left it in the break room.  The guy who made the original decision to get rid of it had a hissing fit when he saw it. Mission accomplished.  I would mix hazelnut and amaretto creamers into my hot chocolate. It was like drinking a candy bar.

BHG: In one of the buildings where I work, we have to pay for everthing (but the cafeteria food's pretty good). When I go to the "other" office, coffee is free from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., but the food selections are limited. It's very difficult deciding which buiding I want to work in. Free coffee is farther from home and forces me to drive on I-595, a highway that's eternally under construction.

The FPC used to show stats for the for who got the most votes for submittals one and two hours after contests went live, but not wins.  My first two wins were as a Liter but then I got sponsored and my life was ruined.  My guess would a post-live winner would be in the 5%-10% range.

Step 1: Make sure your friend will not kick your ass if he winds up being the subject of a Photoshop contest.
Step 2: Find a reliable image host and upload the pic.
Step 3: Submit it like you would submit a headline, but use the link to the pic and make sure you choose the Photoshop category.
Step 4: Hope it goes green.

I hope that helps. Others may chime in with corrections and tips - at least I hope they will, as I've had about three hours of sleep and am starting to hallucinate.

Curious
Neat pics. I think I've seen that snapper in the bucket before.

one does show why you don't want to taunt them too much.

My brother lost the tip of his pinky finger to one, being a dumb kid. The biggest one I ever saw floated to the surface near our boat when we were fishing, I guess to check us out, almost a yard from nose to tail.

The biggest turtle/tortoise I ever saw was at a Bell Labs facility in New Jersey back in the 90's.

It didn't quite take up half of one lane of the access road it was walking across. I was too busy loading out equipment to get a good look though.

It might be time to update that.

It's a little known fact that Lootie is actually an undercover Chechen.

That ALMOST makes me want to submit a Lootie as an undercover spy contest.

If he's still out there then I think we should go ahead and actively put him in some super positive situations.

The upcoming contest queue has become rather empty.

If you creative types could spend a few extra minutes today finding possible PS contest images and/or coming up with new themes and submitting them, we'd greatly appreciate it.

Either that, or the evil admins will greenlight another Lootie contest.  :)

I spent ALL DAY yesterday trying to fix a problem with my wife's computer. After trying every trick in the book without results (including reinstalling Windows) I finally fixed it at 3 a.m. last night. The problem? She has dual network cards, ethernet and wireless; unplugging the ethernet cable fixed it. Arrghhhhhhh!

Could someone with a premium Photobucket account test something out for me?

I can't get Photobucket to stop recurring payments. The option to do this is here:  http://s1229.photobucket.com/settings/status

When I click "Stop recurring payments" it takes me to a help page. When I return to the "Account Status" page, it says my account is still set to recur payments.

I've tried several times (with Chrome and Firefox) over the last two weeks. My payment has recurred in the meantime.

I've sent messages to support and they aren't getting back to me.

I'm sure it's not just me but could someone try and let me know what happens?

Thanks,

Geordles

I just recently received a message from them saying I needed to update my payment information as my current CC on file has an expiration date of this month. I tried quite unsuccessfully to find where I did that, as they did not provide a link to the form. I submitted a support request a week ago, and the response I got was............

I copied that link you provided and substituted my own photobucket subdomain number 1296 in place of your 1229, but I still didn't make it to that page though I know where it is. I'm not ready to stop my service quite yet and I fear what a successful attempt to try what you are trying may result in.

I suggest repetitive support request submittal until they answer, that will be my plan when the time comes.

As "Pro" user I have a vested interest in this site. For some strange reason I must have indicated "recurring payments" in Jan 2013 (this is something that usually NEVER do because of a nasty situation with a large antivirus company I subscribed to several years back) The practice of recurring payments is common in many businesses but it seems that Photobucket makes it difficult to stop them. What a surprise!

A little sleuthing found a few solutions for future reference. Here is the BBB review, which rates them D-. Apparently Photobucket claims that by clicking the "Stop my recurring payments" link, this is sufficient to stop the service. Now, when you click it, you are sent to the support page, and your hunt for an answer in underway. In the BBB review, several emails queries were required for a staffer to actually qualify the stoppage of recurring payment.
If you use PayPal, you have a simple process. Using a credit card will be harder, but still achievable. So yeah, I'm reviewing my options before Jan 2014.

Photobucket Phollow-up:
I decided to make a BBB complaint last night. In the process I had to go to the Photobucket website to get some details, during which I get a pop-up asking me to do a survey.
I complete the survey using the lowest rating for every question ("Very dissatisfied with the service", "Extremely unlikely to recommend to a friend", etc.).
One of the questions is "Why did you visit Photobucket today?"
My reply was "To gather information for a Better Business Bureau complaint"
I just got two emails stating that my recurring payments have been turned off,my credit card has been refunded and my Photobucket account has been reverted to a free account.

I've been using ImageShack.  They used to have a limit of 500 images, so I was routinely trashing my losing and "so-so" PS entries.  But, sometime recently, they changed it to 5GB storage.  So saving an 850-pixel RGB JPEG using a compression of 3 usually lands me well below 100kb per image.  It seems pretty solid for me, no complaints.

/ Now my PhotoSchlocks will be around for years, perhaps decades, instead of months! BWAHAAHAAHAAA!!!

#2: I've been using ImageShack.

According to their upgrade page, a free account doesn't support animated gifs (and you know how much I love animating). With a Premium Basic package, your images won't be available 7.2 hours/month. Their Premium Pro package seems ok but is retardedly expensive compared to their competitors.

I appreciate the input though. I'm having fun researching...

After three different free image hosts went belly up on me, I decided to buy my own domain. I figured, if I'm paying for TotalFark, I might as well cough up a couple more dollars a month for my own hosting. It's just as cheap as subscribing to most image sites and I have pretty close to unlimited storage. I have never regretted the decision.

I replied just now, but I think the intertubes lost my response. It couldn't have been user error.

I wasn't hating on your behavior, or anyone else's for that matter. I don't think enabling voting and then offering to disable is terrible. Others might disagree, but I have seen very little rude behavior in this category in the PS contests.

My comment about "the classiest move is to leave voting off" was a reflection of my belief that contributing to the community -- in particular, the PS community -- is more important than getting votes. I might be getting a little cynical, but when I see the masses ignore truly great entries (not mine) and instead vote up stupid movie references or terrible Lootie shops, it reminds me unimportant votes are. I have no problem with a witty Q&D, but there are some truly great shops that get largely ignored. (I could make a list of 30 examples in the last few weeks, and none of them were mine. You know who you are.) For my own entries, I'd rather have one "nice job" from someone I respect than 100 votes from the masses. I guess that's elitist, but since anyone could learn PS and joint the community, I don't feel guilty about being elitist about it.

  2013-04-23 04:55:33 PM
It's probably better to err on the side of caution and not enable voting on similar shops. There are some folks that get really bent out of shape if you do. It's not as if we need more controversy and outrage in these parts.

For the record, I only get mad when the other shooper beats my entry. (I'm mostly kidding here).  Generally, I only have a hissy fit if someone actually uses my entry and enables voting.

  2013-04-23 05:01:18 PM
ederosia:  bunch of text.

since the non voting entries don't get seen by all depending on settings and unless you are using 99.9% of someones elses entry -- i say go for it. IIRC you started off by saying you and "joe" had the same GIS source/image. that is going to happen. and again IMO if you got the image, did your photoshop then saw a similar one posted .... but hey IANAL, nor a Mod and YMMV :)

besides the offer to turn off voting a "great minds" acknowledgement usually helps.

Thanks. It's like a billion ton weight lifted off my chest.

2. Advice from Reddit users to always answer strongly agree or strongly disagree on the personality tests.

I will put in a quick plug for YAHF.com, (Yet Another File Hoster) for pics.  It is run by a Farker and not as slick as some of the big boys, but it's pay for what you use and 50G is $5. Flat fee, not monthly. And pretty much no questions asked for what you post. I have been using them for years and never had a problem.

As far as voting, if you don't enable it, it won't show up unless whoever is looking at it has set preferences to see everything.Including tennis matches. In the past it wouldn't show in the statistics either, but I'm not sure if anyone is doing that any more.  It got hard to keep up with the changes.

Congrats from me as well! Anxiety reduction, I'm sure.

Your comments above remind me of this:
My son started a new "trend" in employment hiring last fall with his present employer. He was trying to get out of banking (manager) where they were using them like slaves.
He wanted to work for an airline (WestJet) in Canada. Very hard to get hired there. So he makes an introduction video complete with original song, camera work, editing etc (he's an amateur videographer/singer). No airline experience, but the bank gave him plenty of skills. Goes through interview process, which included some pretty weird group activities. Anyway, he gets the job, and his video becomes one of the standards for other future applicants. I don't know, things sure have changed for young perspective workers. One thing that is popular is writing your own reference letter and sending to a person who would endorse it. Makes sense, I guess.

I feel kind of sheepish with a few of you guys struggling to get work. I was unemployed exactly 2 weeks in Jan 1976. Other than Tech School I worked full time from 1978-2008. Paid a price though. Now unable to work because of impaired brain. I am grateful that I had a "union" job and worked for the government, as I have a 67% disability pension to 65. My wife has her own business in home, so we're okay.....for now.

My main question was did he REALLY need a leash for a turtle?  I mean if the WORST happened and it bolted for freedom, you could probably catch it.  Apparently, I could be wrong :)

Gwinney, could you please delete this entry.

For some reason when I go to upload the .gif fark keeps telling me that it is over 900k and rejects the entry.  However, the .gif is clearly only 460k...

...although now the plot thickens.  It was 460k when I uploaded the file to photobucket but when I do a right click "save as" from photobucket back to my machine the file is suddenly 900k!   What gives?  Anyone else having problems with photobucket doubling the size of your .gifs?  This is never happened to me before.  Odd.

Not if there is a lot of undergrowth and definitely not if she makes it to the water - which of course she would, being aquatic and all.

I was having problems with them cutting the file sizes and resolution in half. If their math is bad one way, it's probably bad in the opposite. All over now though, my CC on file with them expired. So I'm going to Flickr and hope that my free account bandwidth holds up on stuff that is already posted. Geordles report on what the BBB had to say about them is accurate in my time with them.

Actually, I don't know either George. Apparently my wife tells me this a.m. that I was "off" yesterday. In other words, I was being an asshole and other things. I don't mean to be, and it doesn't happen very often. Apparently I tried to buy a new lawn tractor over the phone yesterday with her credit card. I am certain she said I could....the transaction declines of course. WTF? She was not happy.
I did the same thing last year by booking a cruise in the Caribbean, which I was sure was okay with her...oops. Never went.
You can see why she keeps me in the bedroom in front of my computer....
Much better today. Thank you Fark!

Dang it, I might as well ring in on this old fart fashion fest too, even though a couple of you seem to already have me beat on the age. I've been wearing leather shoes without socks, stained t-shirts with holes in them and khaki's with raggedy cuffs for nigh on twenty years now. I haven't worn tennis shoes or a pair of denim jeans since I can't remember when. Oh, and my hair stylist used to work for Albert Einstein.  62 and counting.

Hmmm. Interesting topic. So, despite that we have four seasons up here, I wear shorts almost every day. Not outside in the snow, but around the house. Jeans only for pant occasions.
I cannot keep a shirt from receiving a greasy stain, so I keep at least two Walmart shirts unused for nights on the town (that would be tee shirts). Because I previously had a proclivity for excessive bleach use (hard to explain), many shirts have big blotches on them.
Haven't worn a suit since daughters wedding Nov 2009, and now couldn't fit into it. Runners (sneakers for you 'mricans... Sneakers? who came up with that lame name?) that have holes in them. It looks like a bum lives on my side of the bedroom, but my wife is tolerant.
Have never had issues with a receding hairline, so unlike the bald ponytailed bunch who compensate for their frontal hair loss by growing out the back, I keep mine short, very short.

Have you ever paid for it in a six month or one year installment?  If you've only paid for it one month at a time, you won't achieve Ultrafark status.  You need to buy six months or more at one shot to achieve it.

Speaking of mysteries ..last Friday I was lifting a washing machine into my truck with dear wifey. What was that tearing sound I heard coming from my elbow accompanied by extreme pain?
"Nothing" I say, ice and Tylenol helped. Fast forward to today, and after deep introspection I decided to get my doc to check it. Turns out this former ER nurse dismissed the possibility of a torn bicep tendon.
"Why yes, yes it is" says doc, "let me go find an orthopaedic surgeon".
Egads, I've never had an operation before in my life, but tomorrow it will happen.
Turns out this injury is very rare at the elbow join, and usually the domain of body builders and men around fifty.

Good luck with your surgery. You might want to ask your doctor about getting one of those bionic grips. Never hurts to ask.
I'd get one, but I don't think my health plan covers it.

Somebody did a dumski thing and gifted me for a month of TF, even though I said I have so little time to 'shop.
I very much appreciate the gesture and will try to get a few in edgwise, whatever that means.
I have a vacation coming up. Perhaps I'll take my computer with me and kick out a few extra.
Ohh... the pressure....

By the way, Dumski, hope the arm gets straightened out... well.. not exactly straightened... you know... fixed... so it works  like it's 'sposed to.

It means that it's on the acceptable side of borderline. It's always possible that someone else may think differently, but I tend to be pretty conservative about what is SFW and what isn't, so it hasn't really been a problem.

Out of the contests for awhile. Experienced new levels of excruciating, seventh circle of hell pain after my bicep tendon re-attached yesterday. Typing and shooping using with my left hand is very dispiriting....and too damned difficult.

Sit back, crack a can or pill bottle, and let me tell you a bedtime story.

Pro tip for your next orthopaedic-type operation:
Never trust a young, beefy fit ortho surgeon who prescribes the "latest and greatest" analgesic for post op pain. If I had been on my game I would have asked for detailed info about my prescription. Had morphine IV in PAR (yuk) and then Percocet (yummy). Left for home (1 hr away) and got there while Percocet was wearing off.
No problem. New pills in. No reaction. New, increased pain. Wifey gives me bottle. Patient looks.....synthetic,codeine-like pill "similar to" Tylenol #3.
Patient gets angry and increasingly distressed, as he takes T3 4 tabs a day for several years.
Wifey can't bear patients moaning and anger, and off to local hospital (20 min away). Patient is swearing and cursing all the way to hospital at 2am. Patient is giving a diatribe about doctors and medications. Makes teeth gritted observation that beefy fit ortho doc probably tells his peers that he has great success without those pesky narcotics.

Got to quiet (thankfully) ER and triaged by a dopey nurse who proclaims that the drug is supposed to work well. "Have you used it?", angry, frustrated, miserable former ER nurse says to dopey. "No, but you haven't given it a chance, and your arm is swollen too. You need to elevate it", despite implicit instruction not to. Patient points out his very high blood pressure. "Thats from pain", she says. Really? Patient states that he used to work here, hoping for some empathy. Dopey continues writing.
Wifey can feel the steam off the patients body. She is worried

Into ER dept. Patient is hoping for a sympathetic doctor, as he knows most of the town docs from working with them for several years.
Bonus! my own family doc (who urgently referred me for my surgery) walks in with very concerned look on his face. I ask him about the new drug. "Useless", he says, for recent post-op pain. Sets me up with Percocet. "Happy to do it", he says. I'm in and out in 30 min (not counting dopey's time). Patient tells family doc he is going have words with young, beefy fit surgeon when he sees him again. Family doc says it won't work to change beefy fit ortho surgeon. "Set in his ways, and all that". "In his 30's???", patient says. Christ.
Patient satisfied but still pissed at beefy fit.
Get home freshly narcotized. "Don't touch my dressing", beef fit had told patient. Patient loosens extremely tight tensor bandage with relief. Patient wonders now if beefy fit thinks that tight dressing is the only thing keeping his operative site intact. Patient wonders about the use of sutures in beefy fits practice. Shakes fuzzy head in sadness. Patient evilly wishes broken limb for beefy fit, and knows beefy fit will opt for narcotics for himself.

Moral: Many doctors are so concerned or altruistic about prescribing narcotics, they expand their dumbness to include the fresh post op patient who gets discharged. Narcotics have always been proven to be the best treatment in acute pain. Period. Just because of a bunch of toothless Oxy heads, doctors are afraid of their regulatory bodies and its auditing of their presciption habits, to suffering of their "real" patients.

Thus endith left handed, Percocet enabled, one finger typed bedtime story.
I hope you found it helpful and mildly entertaining.

/oh... healing brush and lens flare.

In cases like this, it is best to go with MSPaint* as EVERYTHING looks like it was done with one's off hand.

*Is MSPaint even still on Win7, I've had it for over a year and never thought to look.

  2013-05-03 04:18:37 PM
Sorry to hear your woes Dumski.  My mother had sort of an opposite problem when she came home after her double knee replacement.  They sent her home with Oxycodone, and the stuff nearly drove her out of her mind.  She could tell she was becoming addicted to it, so she quit it cold turkey and decided to live with the pain instead.

Get better soon!

Ennuipoet: Is MSPaint even still on Win7, I've had it for over a year and never thought to look.

Yup, I use it quite frequently.  They made changes to it for the Windows 7 version so I had to kind of relearn how to use it.

Dumski - At least you're still alive......for now. :)

When you're sufficiently healed, we'll send you out to one of our Fark minor league shooping facilities on a rehab assignment. But, for the time being, consider yourself on the 15-day disabled list.

Feel better soon, Dumski! I think I saw Beefy Fit's father some years ago when I messed up my right ankle. He put a cast on it when it was swollen and sent me home on Tylenol. Regular old over-the-counter Tylenol. When the swelling went down the cast shifted, which resulted in excruciating pain and another trip to the hospital.

Ugh, my sincerest apologies Wrongo, I'm in uber-rush mode today and didn't see your entry in the Castle contest.
/ Should know better to preview since I'm always last-minute posting in contests....
// Great minds and all that, right?

I had thought that was already obvious.

I loathe Lootie.

Gwinny - let me know if this is over the line. I can tone down the bird's 'contribution' to that masterpiece.

Not a problem #2. Your's is different and more creative than mine. It got my vote.

Thanks to everyone that has given me best wishes. Muchly appreciated!

So apparently this is a thing that Fark does with some of the shoops.

When did this start?

Somehow I'm not sure I see that as something Fark would do...

Well there's a link to that page on the top right of Fark. Under the Twitter and Facebook links. I never noticed it until I accidentally clicked it.

I first noticed it during the Disney takes over Star Wars contest

Excuse me, but I may have breached Photoshop protocol.

Could someone tell me who is supposed to post the "O" for a thread: Subby or the mod if the thread is greenlit?

  2013-05-05 03:24:33 PM
the O is normally posted by the first person in the thread. you see the contest, create an entry, post the O then your entry.

that assumes you have a host available for the O (a resized copy of the real O) but if you are entering you should have. OTOH if your host will barely handle your entry you can ask here for someone to post the O so you may follow it. folks generally will do that if asked.

Great video!  I hadn't seen it before but it's perfect for the song and I now won't be able to hear the song without thinking of that weird singing head mounted taxidermy style.

I think I'm going to have to spend time time on YT checking out other Residents videos now.

Yup. You don't necessarily have to post an entry right after either. I've hosted and not entered.
