Happy Birthday Grampy.

  2012-11-26 08:32:41 AM
grampy: Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. Marking 62 years on this ol' ball of dirt. With all of the health problems I've had over the years I figure I'm about 12 years ahead of the game :)

62? Really? I remember back when I was 62. Most of my parts still worked back then, and I still had some of my original teeth!
I, for one, am glad you're still sitting down to make us cringe, giggle and snork. HAPPY BIRTHDAY young man!

To all my fellow old farts out there, I highly recommend you all go to the gym in 26 minutes and lift some weights. It made a huge difference in my overall health when started. You don't need to lift massive amounts either, any kind of resistance training is very good for you. Besides improving muscle strength and being able to deal with bullies kicking sand in your face, it helps stave of things like osteoporosis (not just a woman's disease, 27% of cases are in men). Who's up for some hammer curls?

bighairyguy: I highly recommend you all go to the gym in 26 minutes and lift some weights.

i can go in the other room and do that since i have a weight bench and assorted free weights. also have a nice treadmill. don't have much gumption to use either one. and instructions from my pulmonary doctor to stay away from aerobic exercise.

after i got out of the hospital i went to pulmonary rehab for three months at the hospital. treadmill, bike and some arm crank thingy. added a weight machine to try a get a little upper body conditioning. and to maybe help lose the weight i was gaining. in three months i gained 30 pounds which i absolutely didn't need. no doctor could tell me why. and now over a year later i still have it.

OTOH even with a crappy work out routine (it consists of working two days a week. i stand and walk most of the day.) i feel better than i did. the doctor told me not to come back for a year. folks who haven't seen me in a while say i'm looking healthier (except for the weight) and i can do more than i could a year and a half ago.

tl;dr thanks i know i should.

I hear what you are saying. I use my good old treadmill which may be a lot safer than weightlifting, especially if you got that osteoporosis in the legs!
But, you are right. Your bones are only as supportive as the muscles that surround them.

If I remember correctly you have COPD. Were you put on a steroid (prednisone) per chance? THAT will cause you all sorts of weight problems, not to mention a host of other things. However, it is a lifesaver.

The very least anyone can do is walk. In most respects it is the preferred exercise of people 50+. The exception to that rule is some yahoo marathoner who still competes into their 90's.

I used tell my patients (when I was still working) if they were reluctant to move (unless it was contraindicated).."If you don't move, you die". That simple.
Someone taught me well in that aspect as it remained my mantra, but was only used on the most reluctant of patients.

My 26 minutes are up.

Yes, treadmills are perfectly safe, but that's not resistance training. Get some 5 or 10 lb hand weights or those rubber tube thingies. Either cardio or weights are good, but doing both is better.

yes while i was in the hospital and for a week afterward. but that's all. and the inhaled stuff i've been on for few years both before the hospital/weight gain and after.

i've had folks tell me "oh it's steriods" but the doctors who review my prescriptions don't agree.

that wasn't aimed at you, steroids are an obvious suggestion. ok that didn't sound right either :)

I have you all by a few trips around the sun. I am a monopod and exist in a nice place with a competent staff. I was told my ticket was punched about two years ago. I'm still riding this crazy thing but have been told I am losing my grip. I am comfortable most of the time. I had a granddaughter recently pass suddenly at 19 who was as cool as dry ice. I mean that in a good way. Broke my heart but she told me she would wait for me and we will dance thru the gate. I was a good dancer and I really don't want her to wait long.

My condolences TdlF. That is a terrible thing to experience as a grandparent. I haven't been "gifted" with a grandchild yet, so I don't know what its like. Yet.
A grandchild or son/daughter should not die before we do. Its just not right.

Your description of you and her dancing past St. Pete at the gate gives me an emotional tug. Thank you for sharing this, and hang in there you old duffer!

Whoops, sorry, thats probably what you were looking at. The leaderboard has been sort of "neglected" by the webmaster due to health problems. If someone else has another source, chime in.

Dumski:. The leaderboard has been sort of "neglected" by the webmaster due to health problems. If someone else has another source, chime in.

It wasn't really health problems, it was neglected because of constant and inconsistant format changes from Fark. It just became too hard to parse, basically. Besides, The Fark stats seem to be pretty complete, so whats the problem?
