I'd wager they've been covertly moving people into place to aid the protesters and arm them, coordinate them for days now.

then when the us jets arrive to give them air protection they'll storm the palace and overrun him.

I'm sure the wait had nothing at all to do with getting American citizens and workers out of Libya. Which happened a day or two ago.

/Nope, nothing at all.

Well, if Kirk is commanding the Enterprise, this whole thing will be over in the time it takes him to nail the first Libyan chick he can find.

But if Picard is commanding the Enterprise, this thing will drag on until Picard and Qaddafi are stranded on a planet together with an energy monster, and they have to learn to communicate by listening to Qaddafi's stories about Qaddafi and Saddam at Tenagra.

He didnt send the Enterprise anywhere. It's in the Red Sea, not the Mediterranean.

FTFA: "The U.S. does not currently have any aircraft carriers or big-deck amphibious ships in the Mediterranean.

The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise went through the Suez Canal and entered the Red Sea on Feb 15. Although there are no plans to send the ship back to the Mediterranean, the fighter jets based on the carrier could be used to assist in a Libyan no-fly zone, as long as Egypt granted permission for the planes to pass through its air space"

Pretty much the last place we need to be involved in.

However, historically the Navy has done pretty well against the Libyan Air Force.

The problem is the UN are a bunch of pussies and refuse to enact a "no fly zone" over Libya. Meanwhile Libya is continuing to kill its citizens from the air. Keep up the good work UN. So much blood on your hands you'll never be able to wash it off.

This is not a war on terror, it is providing humanitarian relief by denying them the use of aircraft against citizens demanding relief from a ruthless dictator.

Sorry -- but why is this news? Why should we care? And lastly, why are we even over there?

I fully realize some bad stuff is going on over there - but despite what many seem to think we are not the world police, and we shouldn't stick our nose in places it does not belong.

I'm happy that the people of that country are rising up and fighting for their freedom. Once we stick our foot in the door we will never leave though.

I'm fully open to the possibility of being "wrong" but just for a few years why don't we recall all of our soldiers and troops for a few years and let the world fend for itself.

And as soon as we commit forces to the area and gadaffi falls, who's is everyone going to expect to keep the government together? That's right. The United States. We farking tried this shiat already remember? We go in and help the people depose a dictator and spread democracy and every time it costs us billions and billions of dollars and everyone in the country we're trying to help ends up hating and killing our soldiers.

fark them. If they didn't want to be farking shot and killed by their own leaders they shouldn't have let his crazed ass rule for 30 years. If they hate us for that, fine. They're going to hate us no matter what we do.

We don't normally spend a lot of time hanging out in the Med, unless we're doing exercises with a friendly nation. Usually we just pass through on our way to or from the Gulf, maybe make a port call or two.

...You could always say "No".
We can kick down the castle gates, shorten the war, and then opt out of the long term work just that easily. The less damage Quadaffi does now, the faster they recover and the sooner our oil prices stabilize.
Obviously the reason we get involved is so that we have some say with the new government, but its not like we must nation build everywhere our feet touch the soil.

Well, in point of fact, the United States of America is the world's police. Sorry, we are strong enough and trusted enough to pull it off. If you would like to know why the world even NEEDS a policeman I invite you to consider this map:

sciencedude.ocregister.com

Terminal Island, California, is an artificial island constructed to serve as a major port. It is but one terminous in a global web of transportation. Every boy and girl, from Oslo to Bejing, now depends upon it. This web, and the systems of trade and international relations it sprang from must be protected. At the moment the US is walking the beat. In 20-30 years maybe it'll be China. But SOMEONES gotta do it.
