The last Girl Scout Cookies story on Fark was in Villa Rica, GA, which is outside Atlanta. This one is about the founder's home in Savannah, GA. About 300 miles separate the 2 cities.

Whomever complained is a real killjoy. A good chunk of Savannah's tourism comes from Scouts wanting to visit the home. And even visitors that come to Savannah for other reasons like to stop at the house and visit.

As for the city ordinance for sidewalk sales, it's probably in place to try to stop the people that not only try to sell you stuff, but harass you if you don't, like those guys that make the roses out of palm reeds and then yell at you because you're a local and refuse to buy one. Yes, I had that happen a few times while I lived in Savannah.

It does make me wonder if that ordinance or a similar one on the books prevents all the artistic store fronts from displaying merchandise outside the front door. I know plenty of stores downtown do.

I just hope the city council, the joke that they are, can at least unite on cohesive cookie policy.

If you really want to support the Girl Scouts, write them a check and skip the cookies.

A complaint last year ended the longtime practice of selling the cookies on the public sidewalk

"A complaint"? ONE farking complaint and they banned it? And what kind of absolute dickhole complains about Girl Scouts "peddling without a permit" in front of the founder's home?

There are certain things you just automatically go to hell for. Stopping Girl Scouts from selling their cookies in front of their founders home is probably on that list.

I don't want to support the Girl Scouts. I would shank a kid if it was the way to get those farking Dulce de Leche cookies.

My bet is the person who complained and the governmental bureaucrat that thought preventing the Girl Scouts from selling cookies was a good idea are both Democrats.

Demos always want to nip capitalism in the bud and shaft the Scouts. This was a two for one opportunity.

My church is right across the street from the Girl Scouts founder's home. I've been going there 10 years so I've been able to see how the crowds handle the sidewalk, the intersection, the tour groups, and all that stuff. There is plenty of room to set up a little table, and I just don't see how anyone could complain.

Then again, there's always some killjoy that loves to complain about stupid stuff. Why did anybody listen to them, anyways?

/getting a kick, etc.

I've read a few exposees about how the Girl Scouts is basically a pyramid organization that enriches a very small oligarchy at the top, national-level executives who rake in seven-figure salaries. The money that's made from selling cookies doesn't go to the local troops, it's passed up the pyramid. And there's also a whole bunch of $$ to be made off of selling them the uniforms and all the accessories. And volunteer parents are badgered into doing all the actual work free.

Would you like it if Wal-Mart started setting up little kiosks on the sidewalks all over your neighborhood?

"They're going to say, 'Why can't I sit out front and solicit business?'"

It's hard to disagree. Either you agree with the law or you disagree with the law. Unequal application of the law seems ... unequal. Dunno why you would favor one over the others.

Ahhhh.. the product of all the bullshiat laws that get passed because people are complete assholes. I mean really, what the fark is so bad about people selling things on a public sidewalk? Because some uptight pricks don't like to be bothered, they passed a law banning the sale of goods on public sidewalks? Commie bastards.

Accountability, safety, proper taxation. Many reasons to not just let anyone sell stuff on the street. The main reason is to keep those sweaty shady guys in trench coats from selling jewelry and watches and things out of the trunk of their car. And the main reason anyone turns an eye to the girl scouts is cuz they like seeing little girls in pigtails and skirts.

The city's zoning administrator, Randolph Scott, said he investigated the matter and tried to find a solution.

Is there no gift shop in the house that can have a counter for the girls to sell the cookies? The house is open for public tours, don't MOST historic sites have gift shops?

2011-02-28 12:28:37 PM
Is there any reason why they can't sell them IN the house? It can't be because it is a national monument. Alcatraz is a national monument and they sell all kinds of crap in the gift shop. Why not put up a sign inviting people inside to learn about the GS and have a place to buy them? How about investing in vending machines to sell them?

Why do people whine, biatch, and moan about a problem when it would be easier to come up with a solution and get on with life?

Farktastic: Why do people whine, biatch, and moan about a problem when it would be easier to come up with a solution and get on with life?

Because girl scout cookies are big business. This isn't some kid making a few bucks from a lemonade stand. We're talking like half a billion dollars annually in gross sales. Yes, the GSA get some of the money, yet we have this company making millions and millions of dollars based off the business model that cute little girls can sell shiat wherever they want and the rules everyone else has to follow be damned.

You're probably thinking of the BSA. GSA is a fairly decent organization I'd probably donate money to if I had money to donate. Them, Lambda Legal, the ACLU, and the EFF, and Compassion International.

I bought cookies just last night actually. Usually I avoid children like the plague - I've had people freak out and take their kids roughly and drag them the other direction so they don't have to see/deal with me, including last night - but in this case the kid asked me specifically "Ma'am, would you like to buy some girl scout cookies?" while the father was watching and there was no freakout, so I decided to buy a box.

Then I got home, and the reaction from my wife was "you only bought one box?"

Using a scope I glimpsed an impassable wall of alms seeking heathen... I cloaked myself in black agony approaching the beseeching horde...
"I am not going to buy your farking cookies!" That cry was not enough and they descended with pleas most abhorrent. I grasped a Samoa with my dying breath.

Fark the Girl Scouts.

Seriously.

After selling tens of thousands of their over-priced cookies, they went and did away with their scholarship program. They've become just another for-profit organization.

Fark them in the ass with a big rubber dick.

This. Keebler's Grasshoppers ARE Thin Mints. They're absolutely identical (because Keebler is the manufacturer of Thin Mints for the GSA). They used to be difficult to find in stores, but lately I've been seeing them stocked on the shelves.

Actually I was just thinking how silly it all seemed. If there are any reasons not to like the GSA or BSA I am not aware of them. Except for that no gay scout master fiasco, I guess. Either way, I was joking about sticking it to the girl scouts.

Hi, Girl Scout troop leader here, tossing in my 2 cents about cookies. Yes, we troops actually do see a good amount from cookie sales - and we get it up front. Each troop in our council is required to have a troop bank account. The troop leaders collect all monies from cookie sales, deposit it into the account and we keep our percentage and write a check to the council for their cut. (In our council, the troop's cut is 50 cents per box)

Our troop made a little over $7,000 dollars last year on cookie sales, which goes a pretty darn long way for campouts and field trips. We have 8 girls in our troop, and we don't do door-to-door sales or set up tables at Walmart/Kroger. It's strictly moms/dads taking the order forms to work. GS Cookies are such a guaranteed sell, we don't really have to do that much work.

But the uniforms (in my opinion) are a total scam. Way too overpriced and we rarely wear them! Our troop actually has a scholarship set up for underprivileged girls who can't afford to pay for the uniforms, and we keep a bunch of uniforms from girls who've moved "up the ladder" for our younger girls to use.

You are right about free labor, though. We do require a lot of our GS parents. Hey, if you don't want to do the work, don't join. Cuz when your kid signs up, so do you!!!
