I've applied this to my life in general. Much easier that way. I have my opinions but I find the political scene depressing.

In the interest of full disclosure, and before one of you assholes takes this comment and adds "...so vote Republican," I'm an independent who usually votes Democrat except maybe in some local elections. New York Republicans aren't exactly, say, Texas Republicans.

No politics in a bar in Wisconsin? So, it'll be mostly empty then?

I can't imagine they'd have another big topic to discuss.

It's more that I don't like the very idea of political allegiance that anything else. Supporting your side without thinking. That's what team sports are for, and I don't think politics should be treated like team sports.

What I don't understand is why all these shouting idiots only waited until now to argue about it?

I mean, things suddenly did not change. Either there has been a huge problem with public employee stuff for years or there wasn't. It didn't just suddenly happen. Why do they wait for 1 random idiot to get them all up in arms?

"The teachers' union has gotten way too powerful. They expect a better salary and benefits than the people who pay them, which is taxpayers.... Public unions, they think the people owe them," said Austin Blacklock, a 49-year-old Sheboygan man who lost a good-paying manufacturing job and was forced to take a lesser position when his former employer shifted work overseas.

And people wonder why the Koch brothers are laughing all the way to the bank.

Oh it's not that I doubt you. It's only funny in the context of Fark politics. That's super that you're an independent voter, but around these parts the phrase has a funny history.

Although you did come pretty close to claiming that "both sides are the same". Which also has a funny history around here. There's such a thing as being pointlessly neutral.

And while we're at it is it true the the cops and firefighters unions are exempt? I thoght they were included. If in fact they are exempt this is a fail all around, as they are the biggest abusers of public employee unions stealing from taxpayers.

The cops, firefighters and one other union supported Walker in the election. Those three unions are the only exempt unions. Huh.

Well said. I'm very socially liberal but I refuse to say I'm a Liberal or Conservative in Canada because I've voted for both before. I look at the election, the best candidate at the time of election, the issues, and how I can best reconcile the best candidate for myself, my community, and my country.

Bingo. One of the great victories of the modern GOP is turning the working class against itself. Suddenly Unions and worker's rights are bad. Everything resembling a social safety net is "communist". The Wisconsin protests have did one great thing.. they have everybody talking about this in the open and lots of bullshiat and lies are getting some good old fashioned hard examination.
There was a time when blue collar meant Democrat because the Republicans were seen as the party of big business and millionaires. That's why they lost so badly during the 1930s the '40s. Massive PR and lots and lots of money have turned everything around.

That's why, suddenly, the Fark Independent view is being disregarded. Gary PXD and Phil Derpup and the other shills sound and are called out for being retards. It's been a while, but I am seeing them post only a few times because their derp is getting drowned out in calls of "bullshiat" by the rest of us.

Will this turn the tide? I don't know. I hope, but I don't know.

Well, we can go back before unions secured your working conditions for you and your fellow employees. Then you can complain about having to buy at the company store, live in company housing, work 12 hours days for next to nothing. Oh and don't forget the Matewan massacre or the battle of Blair mountain.

Oh and the company housing thing. If you did or said something that the company didn't like, not only were you out of a job, you were out of the house immediately. No 30 day notice. Out of the house and probably out of the city. Immediately.

You should read the story about the labor sympathizers in an Arizona town. One day the railroad brought in thugs, kidnapped all of their employees and townspeople who supported organizing, railroaded them directly to the New Mexico state line and told them never to return to Arizona again. Husbands were forced to leave wives and children behind. Forever.

Fair enough. Like I said I almost always end up voting Democrat anyway. But at the same time, I'm not about to register and I'm not about to parrot rhetoric.

Let the brain-drain begin!

Walker wants to turn WI into the Alabama of the northern midwest. The tidal-wave of early retirement of talent is going to dwarf Walker's meaningless layoff threats, and destroy this state.

It's amazing what teabaggers are willing to defend.

There is no way you actually believe this. Even Fark's dimmest 'conservatives' don't believe what you just typed. If it's attention you crave, just go stick your dick in an ant pile.

Of course, it's possible that some people have thought it over, and come to the conclusion that one party or the other consistently represents their overall value set better than the other. Rejecting partisanship without thinking is just as bad as partisanship without thinking.

But sure. If there were a Republican presidential candidate who:

1) supported labor unions
2) supported abortion rights
3) was pro-environment
4) was anti-tort reform
5) was in favor of real fiscal responsibility
6) opposed citizens united
7) was in favor of a reserved, realistic foreign policy approach
8) opposed torture
9) really wanted to protect social security, medicare, and medicaid
10) supported real universal health care

I might consider voting for him, depending on the candidate's overall quality compared to the Democrat.

Oh, and at the local level, I consistently vote Democrat too. That's for two reasons.

1) Local Democrats gain experience which prepares them for higher office, and

2) Local Democrats are better at the kinds of local bread and butter issues than are Republicans.

I'm curious though. On what basis do you base your voting decisions, since clearly it's not important issues?

-----------------------

So your argument is like this:

"These people have union jobs, and their life is better than mine, therefore we must dismantle the unions so we can all be equally miserable!"

Did it ever occur to you to either A) support a union at your current job or B) go get one of the union jobs that gives all these people such great lives? Why is your instinct to drag others down instead of making yourself happy?
