Plenty of music teacher jorbs up in this area. In fact, two major high school positions just opened up.

Y'all are living in the wrong place - retirees, budget deficits (always great for the arts), and an overly-impacted job market.

Nobody wants to live here, of course, but a job's a job and we have the best economy in the nation right now.

Just sayin'. Have you looked elsewhere?

I looked all over this state. The trouble is that districts would rather hire someone who student taught in their district rather than hire someone with out of state experience. I'm considering switching careers only because I'm sick of being let go every time they decide to cut a music program (last hired, first fired). Plus I'm sick of school politics... seems like people are only promoted because of incompetence. Then those asshats think they can tell me how to do my job, when they have no idea what they're talking about. Perhaps I'm just jaded. But I really loved teaching otherwise.

It'd be easier to look around the whole country if a lot of places didn't require hoops just to apply. I have letters of recommendation, but most of the districts here want these silly forms filled out, so then I'm bugging the people who wrote me letters already. If I'm even offered a job, I cannot accept it until I'm fingerprinted and drug tested, which are at MY EXPENSE (and for whatever reason, the costs of that have skyrocketed). You'd think it was a six figure salary job with the amount of hoops you have to leap through. I have some sort of job right now (pays the bills, mostly), and I'm considering finding a place that will put me full time in a similar and then I can get a place where I can give private lessons. I'm about done with the school fire hoops.

Most places around here are actually looking for out-of-state experience. But other than that, I hear ya. I teach privately, play 2-3 nights a week, work at a music store, and do a lot of consulting/masterclass/lecture gigs. Wouldn't touch a school gig with a 10-foot pole.

Bahknee,

I feel for you. Quite a few of the music teachers I worked with actually started in a different subject just to get some tenure. Others spent a LOT of time subbing until the district picked them up.

An option would be general education with a couple of periods in music. If you can pitch it to an elementary school you could teach music in your own class to your regular students rather than sending them to the "music teacher."

A couple of the districts in the area were considering removing music altogether. Surely there is a pressing need for arts over football but apparently not. All the parents got up in arms about the lack of funding to the extra curricular sports.

The only "teachers" impressed with this were the coaches. None of the teachers understood why we would give up basic arts classes to fund extra curricular activities that the players and their families should be providing the money for.
