I think I felt teeth: Of course being subjected to Rubens at an early age makes me like women with a bit of meat on their bones. Not fatties, just not bone skinny.

The problem with Ruben chicks is that they're kinda flabby. They don't need to lose a lot of weight necessarily, but they should try to get some muscle tone under there.

gregory311: CaptAtl: i want the print when they take it down. It is good modern art. I would give a healthy donation to the MIA for it.

I'm more interested to know where you're going to display it than how much you're willing to pay for it.

Seriously. That thing is probably as big as your house. And if you trim it down to just the graffiti it's still a story and a half tall. Maybe you can carpet your basement with it.

If I've got my dates right (which I probably don't), at that time, not only was privilege indicated by size, but also by the ability to live without having to work for it. Which would explain the err... paintability of the kinda flabby women.

You probably know this already.

I am sending a $100 donation to this museum. Why? Because they didn't react like total ass clowns in a world where that's all people do is act like ass clowns!

This statue of Persephone is on the Syracuse campus. It was on the quad when I was there, but they moved it (along with the other statues that were on campus) to the courtyard of the art building.

farm4.static.flickr.com

I don't know if they still do it, but students would give the statue a shirt when it got really cold in the winter. But it was to be funny, not insufferably prudish.

FTFA:

The museum has fielded about 10 calls from angry passers-by who said they weren't comfortable seeing nudity outside of the museum, said MIA marketing director Kristin Prestegaard. Some people said it forced them to talk to their children about nudity in art, a conversation they weren't ready to have.

I have a feeling this was the part they were upset about.

On the one hand, I think it was wonderfully done.

On the other hand, I think Clear Channel was afraid if they left it up, somebody else would try to do it on a different billboard, get hurt, and sue them.

Ah, what a world we live in.

That is what they had a problem with??? OMFG people are farktards.
Its like the fundies have a 'death by breast' complex, that their faces may melt if they see a painting of a breast. Come to think of it, can we put these billboards up everywhere and thin out the herd of fundies???

Geez, Not ready to talk about art. The beauty of the human form etc etc? Maybe it's because my Mom had art history books laying around but I don't get it at all. There is a difference between a nude and porn a biiiig difference and if you can't tell the difference shame on you.

Ya know, I think I'll visit my local art museum tomorrow. I haven't been for a while, and there are some new exhibits.

Thank you, random fundie tit-hater, for reminding me to support the arts. I might also make a donation to my favorite NPR station, as I could use a new coffee cup.

gilgamesh23: That's really funny. And thanks for reminding me, subby; it's been months since I visited the MIA.

When I lived in MSP, we visited at least every six months. MIA is a wonderful museum. They have a great representation of Impressionist artists, with a Van Gogh that I want to touch so bad, a HUGE Rembrandt, Mary Cassatt, Toulouse Lautrec (strongest lines I've ever seen, best poster painter ever), Degas, Goya, and God knows who I'm leaving off. You can spend a day looking at just their Chinese artwork. MIA is truly a world-class museum.

For all you art-snob types, there was a gallery a few years back called "Paint Made Flesh" that toured the US. The curator did a wonderful job and had a Jenny Saville about 3/4 of the way through that will just blow your mind. Here is a link if your interested: Link (new window)

And somewhere out there is a book covering all the paintings in the show. Wish I had the money to buy it :/

Revised for brevity:

[blah blah blah blah inane blah blah]?

So, this would be like taking an old hustler magazine, and putting it up on a billboard in 2100 to display the "art" of 1980. (Especially because [blah blah blah blah]).

I have mixed feelings about these kinds of things - -
typical graffiti (such as "tagging") = ugly vandalism
clever graffiti (such as this billboard or the giant question mark) = vandilarity . . . I don't want to approve of it, but I can't help getting a chuckle out of it!

America, slowly getting there, one slippery slope retard at a time; burt they didn't finish the burqa.

I'm curious to know ho you think might be responsible for this. I'd love to catch taggers on a billboard one day. Paintball their asses until I get bored. It's not like they can run, huh?

"Some people said it forced them to talk to their children about nudity in art, a conversation they weren't ready to have."

Reads just like a parody news article.

My three boys, who are 13, 14 and 16, have three older sisters. So they've always been subjected to discussions of bras, cramps, and so on, just as the older girls were used to seeing their little brothers being changed and bathed. And I assume they get their looks at porn on the internet when I'm not in the room with them, but we have plenty of real art around here as well, in books and things.

A couple weeks ago, I had them watch the uncut version of The Shining with me, as a way of making up for the fairly highbrow stuff I usually make them endure. I'd forgotten about the bathroom scene so I couldn't say ahead of time, as I do, "hey guys, there are some boobies in this movie, don't be too shocked!"

I just sat back and watched their interest turn to horror as the pretty woman decayed into rotting old flesh.

Now that's parenting!

I find crucifixes offensive, but I don't biatch about it. It's a little naked man in obvious pain and often covered in blood nailed to a couple 2x4s. The lady on the billboard looks like she's having an alright time.
