Shouldnt they be further south killing some Italians on a chairlift?

The gung-ho, IQ deficient, cracked out amphetamine heads probably thought they were in Italy...

Come on, people, let's get this thread frying!

Hmm. 'Set upon.' Seems the real story is the Cessna came into contact with two US fighter jets. And near a US airbase, too! Imagine that.
I wonder if the headline writer would have said the jets 'set upon' the Cessna if the jets belonged to the Norwegian military...or the Swedish, or the French, or basically any military besides the US.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the pride of the US Air Force - the British built Harrier jump jet!"

Actually, it should be the pride of the Royal Air Force, Navy & Marines, the American designed Super-Harrier!".

Yeah, we improved on it and sold it back to them....

Suckers.

Oh, and for our american friends who seems to be confundled over what a fjord is, I pulled thses definitions from aroudn the web:

Fjord -- A narrow, deep estuary excavated by glaciers and that commonly has a sill at its mouth

fjord (pronunciation: fyowrd) Definition: [n] a long narrow inlet of the sea between steep cliffs; common in Norway

Fjord - "A former glacial valley with steep walls, presently flooded by the sea."

A Fjord defines itself as being a frozen valley invaded by the sea.
(A long, narrow, and deep inlet of sea between high cliffs)

"Deep and narrow indentation of the marine littoral, bordered with high cliffs,
and resulting from the invasion by the sea of a U-shaped valley."

"Narrow, lengthened and steep marine Gulf, which results from
the invasion by the sea of a U-shaped valley dug by a glacier."

Yeah, we improved on it and sold it back to them....

Undoubtedly. I got bored with our Air Force when it became obvious they'd decided to give up designing cool planes after the original Harrier.

The Lightning was quite smart. Just slightly out of date now though :o)

angusyoung, whats that you're smoking there? rland is, has been and will always remaind a NORWEGIAN airbase - we don't allow any of our allies to keep bases on norwegian soil in peacetime. We do allow them to come to us to train thought, and charge them heavily, since we got thase wast open areas with little or no civilian traffic in, and terrain / weather conditions that can really test the pilots skills.

FOr more on rland, see this norwegian page For more on the RNoAF, see this english page, in particular the two PDFs at the bottom.

Thank you.

optikeye: Thirty-something, by any chance? :) I believe the game you're thinking of is "MACH 3", one of those LaserDisc video games from the mid 80's...

I was in the lead F15. We were playing on the Harassin' Fjord map, and I was trying to stay low to avoid Opposition AA fire. One of our plane campers was trying out the map-specific-vehicle, the cessna. We almost shot him down because the server had target identification turned off, but I saw he was an allied guy when I got within radar range, and just missed him!

Either that, or I play too much Desert Combat.

...That's an entirely different kind of flying, all together.

Who was talking about the Swiss? Sweden is not Switzerland.

please, the Russians invented the vector thrust, and are quite good at it, actually.

Oh man, I'd forgotten about that game. It gave you the choice of flying as a fighter or a bomber. Fighter was third person, and bomber was sort of an overhead scroller.

Fun game, it was one of my favorites.

Blankoboy-
When will we all wake up and realize that the US is all-powerfull and bush is god for a 4 or 8 year period? They can do whatever the fark they want...be it:
-flip over a civilian tour boat with a submarine
-kill innocent people in a cable car due to stupid pilots
-kill allied Canadian soldiers due to stupid/doped pilots
-buzz civilian aircraft flying in countries other than their own
-rape innocent japanese pre-teen girls
-commit crimes upon the japanese civilian population
-invade countries by providing false justification

Wow. Wanna compare the track record of all of the other superpowers in their day? Let's compare:

Soviet Union (Now RUSSIA):
-Stalin killed MILLIONS in collectivism
-Afghanistan, 'nuff said
-Killed citizens that dissented throughout history
-During the fall of communism used the military to hold Moscow and the Kremlin with tank attacks
-Placed rotting nuclear subs in riverways with cores that were exposed and leaking
-Run entirely by the Russian Mafia, which promotes illegal activity worldwide
-The list goes on and on

China:
-Killed dissidents in Tienamen square because protestors said the People's Republic was not represented by the people
-Claims rights to Taiwan
-Regularly shoots missiles over Taiwan when they hold democratic elections
-Tried to "sneak" purchase an aircraft carrier from the defunct Soviet Union
-Has shot hundreds, if not millions in its history for being dissenters

See? No one is a saint. You are a troll.

SHALL I NOW MENTION NORTH KOREA?

Those were all US mistakes. The US apologized for every single one of them. The US soldiers went to jail for their behavior with that little girl. The submarine incident was televised nationally in Japan where the United States literally prostrated themselves grovelling to the Japanese people for their mistakes. The planes "that buzz other planes" are there by the good graces of the host country. Mass populations commit crimes, so Americans will commit crimes outside a military base. By the way, friendly fire accidents in war are not the best example of global hegemony... moron.

Get a better idea of what is happening. Read the follow up stories as well instead of using the incident as a stumping point for America bashing. You're only presenting one side to bolster a poor argument.

jonr is correct.

And I quote the USAF test pilot of the F/22 (I work at a defense contractor) regarding his comments about the Russian MiGs with thrust vectoring:

"Our guys in our planes -- meaning F/16, F/15, and F/18 -- shoot them down most of the time. We've captured (or bought) those MiGs, and train against them. The scary part is that our guys flying them beat our guys flying our planes EVERY TIME."

/not worried b/c the F/22 and F/35 JSF have yet to break on the scene

So if the Gripen was built by Saab, and Saab is now General Motors, does that mean that the Gripen is now an American plane?

OK, but it still isn't a Finnish name. I guess he/she/it could still be Finnish through a variety of methods.

2003-07-25 12:30:09 PM
SatanicNinja: Actually, he isn't finnish, his first name is Finn, which is a common name in Norway, with roots going back a long time.

The actuall origin of the name is disputed, see http://www.andythenamebender.com/name-meanings/Finn.htm for some details.

Gosh, I wish we could have foreign military aircraft buzzing civilian aircraft in our country too!

KilometersDavis : Good question, but I think there are different divisions in SAAB, and Im not sure if all of them were sold to GM....

2003-07-25 01:58:13 PM
I think baconabuser was right, the Cessna was not cleared for the highway to the danger zone, it's quite obvious you shouldn't ride into it when you're closer on the edge.

OK, that works ;)... & yeah, the name Finn does not necessarily mean anything to do with Finland. I just read that stuff retardedly I guess.

"get yer butts back above the hard deck"--Jester

"Your ego is writing checks your body can't cash, Mister."

You would think the U.S. learned a lesson after the Italian ski lift incident. Or the dead Canadians in Afghanistan. Or the commercial jet full of Iranian civilians, or the family shot down over Columbia, or . . . . OK, they'll never learn. We must dominate the world's air and space.

2003-07-25 03:30:26 PM
Hardrookwar You would think the U.S. learned a lesson after the Italian ski lift incident.

Who do you guys keep assuming the actions of one individual represent the entire US policy?

Ok, if this really happened, some idiot was flying like a jackass and was doing something illegal. He's an asshat. I fail to see why he's blamed for it.

I bet if a black man commits a crime, you blame all black men for being criminals too, right?

Some of you really need a wake up call. There isn't an american policy book with an entry stating "Section 26: Foreign citizens are morons, you will disrupt, threaten, and otherwise hassle them at any oppertunity."

2003-07-25 03:50:50 PM
one individual? i just gave four examples, to go along with the present story's fifth, involving multiple pilots in some cases. just how much more ass-hattery do you need before you start to see a pattern?

there IS an american policy of playing cowboy around the world, of our military flying low with complete disregard for the safety of others--for no reason at all (unless you believe this was an integral part of their "training"; to barrell through norweigian fjords preparing for the day when we fight an air war against a scandanavian nation on their soil).

pilot attitude seems to be "f--- yeah, we're hot shots and we own the sky, and we can do whatever we want, buzz the tower, buzz civilian planes, fly without regard to the safety of others and recklessly KILL innocent people--and everyone else just has to live with it, and with our apologies after the fact."

TRUE, that is a small number compared to the MANY pilot heroes who are responsible and keep us (and other nations) free, but perhaps our commanders should be a little STRONGER with discipline, and set some RULES as simple as "5K feet, or we take your wings away." how hard is that?

2003-07-25 04:31:03 PM
I live in Texas, and about the coolest thing in the sky i have ever seen was shortly after 9/11. I was walking home from school, heard the unmistakable sound of jet engines, looked up, and saw a trio of A-10's flying somewhere around 2,000 feet above me. They were pretty big in the sky and i could make out all the details clearly. It was pretty cool. Also, I've seen a C-5 at very low altitude (i cast a huge shadow over the street i was on) and oddly, a B-17 complete with nose art being escorted by two P-51D's (assumingly to an airshow at Randolph AFG)

2003-07-25 04:32:11 PM
Okay Hardrookwar,

That's a GREAT IDEA!

All you mud movers:
"THOU SHALT NOT FLY BELOW 5000' except to land or take off or else thou shall be stripped of thy wings."

That's real smart....Why didn't the military think about that?

HMMMMMMM Maybe because that is about the BEST altitude for practically every ANTI-AIRCRAFT weapon(those are guns and missles designed to make flying planes not fly any more) in the world.

So we attack our enemies from 5000+ feet. It would be like opening day of duck season (wabbit season). You should do a little research on the 8th Air Force in WWII. See what happens when you go flying over an enemy city at altitude...

PLan B: We stick to the rule, but at times of war, we take it away in the warzone and allow the mud movers to get down and dirty, thus avoiding the AA guns. So they will be flying NOE with no practice.....no training. I can see it on CNN now:

"And today the US launched an airstrike against (fill in the city), but unfortunately, none of the planes made it to the target due to the fact they all turned into smoking holes on the hillsides on the way to the target because the pilots had no training."

Wait....I think I got it Hardrookwar....your cover's blown. You have the defense contract to supply caskets to the US Air Force.

These bad incidents suck, and there yes are a couple of bad apples, (and they can be found in any job, in any country in the world) but when you think of the millions of flight hours, and sailing hours that our military puts in every year, statistically speaking you are prolly far more likely to get hit by a piece of frozen turd drpped from an commercial airliner.....

And to add to the list of what others have done....what about the ASSHAT chinese pilot who buzzed and almost took out one of our spy planes. Yeah, he died (boo-hoo), but he almost took out our plane in the process. That pilot was known to be a thrill seeker and a "cowboy"

2003-07-25 04:42:13 PM
The Gripen sucks. It's not as bad as say....the MiG-25, but it still sucks.

2003-07-25 04:45:20 PM
Sukhoi Su-33's arent bad either...pretty much the most manueverable fighter out there

2003-07-25 04:45:52 PM
Hey TheNextDimeBagDarrell, one of the coolest things I have seen is a B-1 fly at low altitude over my workplace parking lot. It was pretty cool.

2003-07-25 04:47:08 PM
Anything that is based off of the Su-27 seems to be pretty awesome. Bad thing is that the Chinese have them now.

2003-07-25 05:07:49 PM
If I need to make a quick get-away,
I always fly my TU-144

2003-07-25 05:49:38 PM
Yeah, but that hasn't got any guns or missiles on it.

2003-07-25 08:20:59 PM
The TU-144 is just the Russian copy of the Concorde...Gee isn't that interesting, the Russians have exact copies of the B-29, B-1, and the Concorde...

2003-07-25 09:49:19 PM
Heh. Thanks, alea711. ;)

2003-07-28 09:10:43 PM
Typical arrogant farking americans. dont know how to behave like decent people, careless and selfish. Remember this? American jets run through a gondola cable and kills 20 people?
