Yeah, it's impossible that the Crusades (and lumping them all together is a bit of a stretch by itself) might have been part of an ongoing conflict (through the present day in some ways) between two large cultural blocs, each held together by the thread of common geography, religious beliefs, and historical imperial roots.

Clearly it was a bunch of isolated events in which Christians committed no crimes, violated no human rights, or even considered doing the slightest wrong.

Meanwhile the Muslims were all a bunch of evil torturing rapists who hated Jesus and loved slaughtering all those innocent heavily-armed invading Christian saints.

In fact, they were so evil that one of their greatest leaders, Saladin, was never looked upon in Christendom as an example of chivalrous virtue.

Oh, wait, that's all wrong, it's just Santorum living up to his name.

And everyone knows the Crusades were actually a false flag operation by the Shintos.

No, not really. Which is why this: "The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical"

Is so mind boggling dumb. It's like he just read "Angels and Demons" and thought Obama wrote it, or something.

Valid point.

Anyway, Santorum trying to rehabilitate the crusades is just...weird.

People have done bad stuff throughout history. The Crusades were bad. Why he can't accept that is...bizare.

"The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical," Santorum said in Spartanburg on Tuesday. "And that is what the perception is by the American left who hates Christendom."

It sounds like Rick has been skipping his meds again.

What is with all this "all liberals hate western civilization" business? That used to be the territory of right wing radio hosts, now it's being uttered by potential presidential candidates.

WTF, conservatives?

Why you always bringin up old shiat?

Everyone knows ACORN is to blame for the Crusades.

Is there ever anything that doesn't resemble a sloppy piece of corn-filled shiat that comes out of this idiot's mouth?

I don't hate Christianity or Western Civilization, but I also think that horrible things were done by both sides. And it looks like some people on the Right want to turn this into a New Crusade of Christendom vs. Islam.

Only this is 21st century America and though Christianity is the dominant religion of this country, we are NOT a Christian nation. We are a nation composed of people of many different religions. One of which is Islam.

As a non-Christian, I find the attempts to MAKE this into a New Crusade abhorrent.

It's incredibly shortsighted to justify your side's horrible actions while castigating the other side for their own horrible actions. But then, Santorum's an idiot and continues to show his own ignorance.

Ooh, a flamewar about history! I like it.

When do we get to the part where we talk about how the Arabs were much smarter and more civilized than the West during that whole era?

Especially for something that happened hundreds of years ago. The First Crusade was nearly 1000 years ago, for God's sake.

From what I've read the Arab world doesn't stress over the crusades. It's the Mongols who still piss them off.

Apparently by speaking out against those who criticize Christianity's role in the Crusades, Santorum is on a crusade against the crusade against the Crusades.

And by criticizing Satorum's crusade against the crusade against the Crusades, we're on a crusade against the crusade against the crusade against the Crusades.

Also, "crusade" doesn't look like a real word anymore since I wrote it out so many times.

Short history of the Crusades: The Christians and the Muslims beat the living snot out of each other, and both used the opportunity to beat the hell out of on their own dissident sects and Jews while they were at it. Christian notions of "Just War" and Islamic notions of "Jihad" were radically changed and hardened by the experience.

Actually, it is kind of a contentious issue. Wait, we are on a college campus and it is 1970, right?

I'm sure Santorum can tell us all about Bohemond, Pope Urban, Baldwin IV, and the idiot Peter Bartholamew. No doubt he knows his shiat and isn't just speaking out of his ass.

So is he running for Republican Nominee for President in 2012 or against Palin for the position of Holy Derpdom Emperor?

\seriously. The left is making a big deal about the farking CRUSADES? Where people waded through blood in the streets of Jerusalem killing everyone because they were pissed that they stopped reading the bible halfway through? When the fark did this happen??

Mmmm. I might have taken this complaint a bit more seriously before the latest Texas revisions to the Social Studies standards.

FTFA: 'All men are created equal' - that's a Christian value, but it's an American value."

Right. All men are created equal is a Christian value. Except when Christianity was used in the US for justification of slavery (hey, it's in the Bible) and racism (and still is for latter by certain extremist groups such as the KKK).

Santorum is one of those people for which the entire world and its history is made to fit his ideology no matter what reality looks like.

WorldCitizen: FTFA: 'All men are created equal' - that's a Christian value, but it's an American value."

Isn't it actually be definition a non-Christian value? One of the precepts of Christianity is that there was a man who was born and that man was god. Kind of goes against the "equal" thing.

I love how everything is JUDEO-Christian now that it's not kosher to hate on Jews. People like Santorum were the anti-Semites of the early twentieth century.

Well, it's quite obviously true. Liberals despise permissive Western norms and would rather live under an extreme-right Islamic theocracy. Don't spend too much time thinking about this; it is a sign that you are anti-Jesus.

The Christian idea of all men being created equal does NOT match what he is trying to claim here.
