Surprisingly, there's actual momentum behind this. It might work, either directly or indirectly (enough people signing up and pledging money proving to Fox there's an audience for more episodes).

The bad news is Wheadon's busy with Avengers, Fillion has Castle, Baccarin has V, Baldwin has Chuck, and Glau has The Cape. However, V and The Cape probably aren't going to make the cut for renewal, and it'd be easy to write Baldwin out of Chuck (and if they just reassign him, he can still do guest spots). The only one that'd be a problem is Fillion...something tells me that'd be a very hard choice for him because it looks like he's having a lot of fun with Castle (not as much as Firefly obviously, but it's got solid enough ratings to stick around for a while).

Does this involve Staite and/or Torres being naked?

This is important.

I don't get it. It's on DVD and will soon be syndicated. Why is it such a big deal to see it on the internet?

Look, I like Firefly. It was a great show that wasn't given the chance it deserved to find an audience. But it's dead. It's not coming back. Time to let it go.

This whole thing is based on this one offhand comment from an interview: "If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet."

I don't read that as meaning new episodes.

People - let it go. It's not going to happen. It's been almost a decade. Everyone in the cast and crew has moved one (well, maybe not Kayley or Simon or Book).

Also, the movie killed one of the main characters. It's hard to unring that bell.

It's not just distributing the already made ones. Read somewhere a couple of writers have already jumped onboard the idea. Don't think it's gonna happen since Nathan is tied up in Castle and others are tied up in other projects. Still could hope, though. In the meantime, we get to chuckle at the Firefly references that keep popping up on Castle.

I dunno, I found myself wondering the other day if it wouldn't be possible for Firefly to have a Star Trek like resurection. The formula and universe that Joss created were wonderful, you don't nessicarily need the exact *same* characters. Yes, I loved the chemistry the old crew had and Mal was a fantastic character, but there's still a whole lot of playing room in that sandbox if you really wanted to resucitate the show.

First of all, as for wash and Book being dead, there's absolutely nothing that says it has to pickup where the movie left off. It can just as easily pickup right where the series left off. Wish is fine cause I'd prefer to see more sexual tension between Kaylee and Simon and more disavowing of the obvious from mal and Inara...

As for making this happen, Firefly averaged 4-5M viewers per episode. By my rough math around 2M individuals bought tickets to Serenity. if 25% of the series viewers (or 50% of Serenity ticket buyers) were to pony up $40 that would generate $40M in funding. And many would pay more. Considering that a typical season of a show on dvd is $40 or more, that's not asking much.

The terminator rights cost $30M to acquire so its quite likely that this money could not only secure the rights but cover production costs for a full 20 episode run. Any fan of the show would gladly pay $40 to see this happen. Anyone who contributes get to watch the show on the web behind a paywall, and anyone else can go watch an episode for 1.99 on iTunes.

Done and done.

Did you even watch the show?

/Whores or not, I'm in.

Realistic? Maybe not.

However, I'd pony up $100 if it meant that reaching whatever total got the ball rolling again. Heck, let's face it, I'm lame and would probably start taking a tithe out of my weekly paycheck.

And hell, I just tossed $5 at making a Robocop statue in Detroit, and that took all of four days to reach the goal of $50k, all for a good solid laugh.

So: Bookmarked.

Or I could just, like, queue them up on Netflix and watch them. Oh wait, I did that already.

Besides, they already screwed the pooch on the story anyway. Remember, in the series, why they were after River? It was because she was 'special'. She knew things and could do things. In the movie it just became her knowing a 'secret'. Once the secret was out she was no longer important. They bullshiatted the story just to get the movie made. Also, as already pointed out, several main characters are kinda dead.

It's done. Stick a fork in it and move on.

Not to throw cold water on this, but I seem to recall something like this was attempted for Farscape.

Failed, IIRC.

Firefly filmed in California. Castle films in California. Not that hard to have Fillion doing two shows at the same time (he's shown that he does love Firefly time and time again, especially on Castle). The seasons might be shorter, and the production value might be lower, but it could happen. There just might be breaks between episodes during regular tv seasons. So Firefly might, realistically, end up a summer show online, much like Eureka or True Blood.

/damn, it would be great to see that old ship in the sky again

2011-02-20 06:44:55 PM
Hm. Would this have the potential to go sideways though? Existing rights holders see interest being generated, start getting a firm sense of the actual money involved, and then, just before the fans get all the money together, they produce something with those rights again. Just enough to get profit, then start the cycle again?

Wouldn't it make sense for the property holder to try and make another feature film out of it, then sell it off?

2011-02-20 06:54:13 PM
While I hope that this does happen, I seriously think that this will flounder on everybody participating.

/you can count on my 40$ though

2011-02-20 06:57:00 PM
If I had any money at all, any, I would contribute. As it is, going to post this on facebook, talk my browncoat friends into helping out.

So how do these pledge systems work? Is the money held in 'escrow' of some sort until the goal is reached? How they guarantee it's not just a big scam?

The production budget for Serenity was $39 million. Even after the worldwide gross it didn't make that much. The $39 million doesn't include marketing.

Nothing about this screams "slam-dunk" to me.

I don't want to sound like a hater, but after hearing my dad (big sci fi fan), the internet, and a number of friends whose opinions I value all rave about Firefly, I tried watching it. I thought, "for all these different people to have the same glowing opinion of this show, it must be great."

I wouldn't say I hate it, but I just do not get why people like it so much. Dad bought me the DVD set for Xmas, and the movie- got through the first disc, still don't like it.

Can a fan point to a particular episode or event at which point the series "gets good"? I think its indisputable that some shows are just like that (Venture Bros Season 1 sucked, but is one of my favorite shows of all time) while others are instantly captivating (Lost).

If there's hope on the horizon (it gets amazing after episode 5, just stick it out) I'll try again- but it certainly seems like a show where if I don't like it right away, I never will.

What I would want to see would be the time between the end of Season 1 and the start of Serenity. With the somewhat episodic nature of the show it shouldn't be too hard. We could see Inara go home, get the rest of Book's story and see him retire back to the abbey, and have a few random adventures. Just 1 more season though, anything more than that would really strain the limits of these characters and their story. The rest of the 'Verse is still fair game though. And I believe Joss has expressed an interest in doing other stories in the 'Verse anyway...

Oh yeah, they're dead. Nevermind.

Meh, Whedon could always bring them back as parallel-universe doubles or clones or holograms or robots or something... or any combination thereof.

You're thinking too small. The jobs taken to get the necessary information, tools and contacts to exact revenge for Wash's death could easily be half a dozen episodes. Zoe's zeal gets out of control and causes plenty of problems.

Another half dozen could be tied in with the back story of Shepard. His past associates are really ticked off and are both trying to blame and recruit Mel. Multiple factions could be playing everybody with plenty of chaos ensuing.

The next season could be them getting caught up with escaping after the revenge is completed and getting snarled with an attempt to revive the browncoats. Mel would be tempted but says no. They try to seduce him to the cause, they get snookered into part of it, more shiat goes wrong, etc.

It could be a merry old time always riding on the ragged edge of disaster. As long as Kaylee is put in sexy outfits every now and then, Jayne gets to be his usual obnoxious self and shoots a few people he shouldn't, Inara shows up sexy as always and so forth, it's all good.
