But the firefighters are being made exempt from the bill because they supported Walker...oh wait.

2011-02-18 05:22:13 PM
I guess the Police and Fire Fighters unions are realizing that if Walker strips away the collective bargaining rights of every other union out there, then they will have weaker negotiating position in the future when their wage and benefits contracts expire.

Is there anything that bagpipes can't make awesome?

Yep. It is beautiful to see.

Hm. This presents a difficult quandry for the right. How do you demonize firefighters? Hm.

There's nothing to demonize. In fact, I don't hold any of this issue against the rank and file. It's the Union thuggery that needs to be busted up.

We have plenty of Federal and State labor laws, OSHA and Civil Service laws that already protect these workers pretty well. There is no need for this Union thuggery shiat. In a bad recession, we all get to feel the pain. But for these clowns, they want free stuff AND raises. That's bunk.

No they don't want free stuff, they are willing to concede to upping their contributions to healthcare and pension, they don't want to lose the ability to bargain with their employers.

A house fire is a choice that a home owner makes, they know the risks involved with living in a structure that is made of flammable materials. It is not the government's role to choose what does and doesn't burn. Fire fighters are just officers of the nanny state protecting people from their own bad choices. In fact fire fighters destroy jobs by preventing buildings from burning down, and saving people from those buildings... what about the entrepreneurial contractors who can build something better over the ashes of the old... what about the poor undertakers who lose business every time a firefighter rescues a child from a fiery death.

Firefighters are part of the problem, and getting rid of them is part of the solution.

/feels dirty

No. They want the ability to have an input.

That's fine but that ability has been abused over the decades and in many cases it's simply a political extortion mechanism. In my State, they have solid control. They have insulated themselves as a "protected class" no matter what.

And that ain't right. And we see the backlash of that National tension flaring up in Wisconsin.

Oh yes, we know how well government regulation works (new window)

The Massey Energy Company is totally non union, and currently has West Virginia on the ropes both economically and politically.

If a union is operating properly, it looks out for it's workers and safety of the plant. This also helps the company out by lowering their cost on injuries and fines from the government.

As long as the protest are peaceful, there is no need to call them thugs. The only problem Unions really have is sucking the cocks of their corporate overlords-selling out those they are supposed to represent.

[sigh] We're talking about government unions. I don't worry about private unions, they are an endangered species. And these unions ARE thugs, they collect dues from every member and spend that money to keep themselves in power on a very narrow political platform. In the government, the union controls the voting block that votes for themselves. That's inherently a conflict of interest.

BTW, not all union members are left wing nutballs. Many of them are conservatives and don't like their dues being spent on one political slant.

As I said, it's not the rank and file that draws my ire, it's the union thuggery.

They have had decades to decide to contribute to pensions and healthcare. But they were just getting ready to bargain, right?

Well, so do I. Because that's how America rolls. Sometimes we have to deal with abuse and sometimes we have to reign in the abuse and we're seeing it unfold.

I think the best way to break the unions is like this:

Step 1 -

Propose a tiny, tiny little change to their contract or whatever. Say, instead of no copay for doctor's visits, now they have to pay $5. "In these tough times, we need everyone to tighten their belts and contribute a little bit." and all that. Something so small and minor and something that 90% of the non-union people deal with it would be crazy to oppose it. Don't ask for anything else, don't try to sneak other changes in.

Watch the unions freak out and march and pound their little fists.

Then you can point to them and say, "See how they aren't willing to even work with us even for the slightest little thing!" Go on and on about how everyone is hurting and the state can't afford stuff and one of the ways to avoid raising taxes is to charge a measly $5 per doctor's visit for these union people.

Public sympathy for the union would evaporate and they would look like spoiled children. Point to anyone defending them, and say "See?! We're trying to be responsible people and work on our budget and they won't even hear of it. They are the problem!"

Step 2 = ?

Step 3 = profit

If the unions are thugs, then the governor of Wisconsin is a Crime Boss. Creating a budget short fall so he can break up unions.

IMHO Government Worker should have their rights protected. They should also have the ability to bargain for benefits.

And if you do take a job where the unions exist, then pay your damn dues or work elsewhere. Paying dues is no different than working at chain store that makes you buy a uniform to be employed there,

2011-02-18 06:36:04 PM
99% of unions give the other 1% a bad name.

Ohhh, that's a load of hooey. Buying a uniform is no where near the same as having to pay a 3rd party to have a job. We call that extortion.

Hey, dumbass, they get that stuff by working. It is not free. Now, you may think that, with benefits included, they are overpaid, but it is not free.

Yes it is. Most companies don't make their own uniforms. That's taken care of by another company. Thus it's an added expense to work their (Not mentioning it's an expense that re-occurs on style, wear and tear, etc., etc.)

Union dues are an expense of working in a union location.

You are welcome to work elsewhere.

It's so easy to forget that, even if a tiny reactionary minority wins the "elections", power ultimately rests with the workers. It was workers who created the Soviet Union and workers who brought it down.

I wish the best of luck to the unions of Wisconsin, and hope Walker resigns in disgrace. And the only reason you aren't as well-paid as public sector workers is that our corrupt government turns a blind eye to illegal private sector union-busting.

Came for the GaryPDX blowing hard out his ass about unions.

Once again not disappointed.

Shame of it is that it is small mindedness and jealousy that create such sad trolls, trolls that provide nothing of any real substance yet enjoy the benefits that union activists and union labor have provided them.

Enjoy your bitter lonely self. We will be there when you need us.

Question for bagpipe people --

What's the tune that they're playing? Does it have a history that makes it a very interesting choice in this context?

I know there are Farkers who know, and I suspect the answer's going to make this even more awesome. Thanks in advance.

The middle class didn't cause this recession. The rich did. That is why they are rich, because they know how to work the system. Since the rich are responsible for maintaining the economy, and benefit the most from it, let them pay to fix it.
