FTD is owned by United Online. The same folks that own Classmates.com. I would never give either my credit card number.

I signed up for groupon a month ago and I really don't see the appeal. None of the coupons I get sent seem very frugal and often they are for obscure or useless products. I dunno, I guess I'm not the target demographics for the service

Anyone planning on investing in the Groupon offering should just send the money to me instead. My goodwill is probably worth more than any shares they give you.

I recently picked up a couple of $80 symphony tickets for $19 so I'm not complaining. Just keep an eye out for the ones that interest you.

I bought a groupon for 1/2 off a round of golf at a local course. Seems like a good deal to me.

im having a whole lot of fun with my groupons.

maybe it depends on whether or not your city has a lot to offer you and how adventurous you are.

groupons ive gotten:

target practice at a gun range
strip pole class
babysitting service
house cleaning service(was looking for a new one anyway)
professional organizer (which i was gonna hire anyway)
two bakeries one of which i always go to and the other is literally on the corner of my block
barnesandnobles.com (i buy my kids more books than toys)
hookah bar
in home pedicure/manicure service
handy man (needed my old intercom system removed so that was right on time)

i cant think of the rest but im loving it. i dont buy what i dont need/want.

Anyone else play Words With Friends on their android/iphone? I'm amused that they couldn't call it scrabble.

Though I'm annoyed it won't let me play some slang words that are in the dictionary, but will let me play obscure Old English words. What the fark?

/Zynga should know slut is a word.
//because they are one. Hah.

Groupon is for women with disposable income and no children, it has nothing to offer men (or anyone who isn't a silly twit for that matter).

The Groupons I keep buying for local brewpubs beg to differ.

Eh, there's deals for golf around here that I've bought, and on occasion there's one for a restaurant my wife and I were going to try anyway. But yeah, there's an awful lot of spa services on there. And you'd think given they know I'm male that they'd target my daily deal a lot better than they have (where most has been spa stuff, women's clothing boutique, or even stuff out in the suburbs).

i do have disposable income (every adult my age should). i also have two children. so only part of your statement was true in my case.

a lot of groupons are useless to me but some of them have been really fun and introduced me to things i didnt know were available.

THIS - and so much more. I'm stumped as to who and what their demographic is. I'm a white middle-aged male with kids and a reasonable amount of disposable income. I WANT to buy something but they keep sending obscure crappy deals on stuff I wouldn't take for free. Whoever the genius was that turned down the $6B deal for them was perhaps the biggest moran of the universe.

Back about 5.5 months ago, the place I work for launched a local site that works kind of like Groupon. It's making money AFAICT, even though everything it's had on it is limited to businesses in/near one metro area. Groupon's a hell of a lot bigger and has a hell of a lot more people working on it.

So, I'd be a tad more optimistic than that, provided that the people running Groupon aren't being greedy idiots who promise what they can't deliver. (Greedy idiots? In charge of a business? It's more likely than you think....)

I bought my first groupon thing recently. I'm using it tomorrow so we'll see how it goes. I imagine it varies widely depending on where you live.

It's not necessarily targeted at the frugal coupon using crowd. While there are lots of deals on there I don't use there are also lots for booze, restaurants, etc.. which I do use. Seems targeted at women and people who like to go out. Works great for me being a 20s male with disposable income. Gets me to try new restaurants and bars, which is the allure for the businesses. If I'm going out anyway I'll gladly spend 10 dollars for 30 to use on drinks/food.

There must be some start differences in regional coupons (groupons?). Late 20's male in a suburb of Saint Paul, and here is what I was sent for the last 7 days:

Nothing on that list appeals to me, and even though I'm older than your demographic I'm pretty sure late-20's me would have said "WTFITS?" if offered any of that crap.

Exactly. None of this stuff appeals to me. The stuff that may/kinda/sorta appeal to me are never a very good deal or can be had for cheaper elsewhere.

I'm not saying Groupon doesn't offer good stuff for certain people, but my experience hasn't been a very impressive one.

Back at the beginning, the idea was that you could buy the groupon, but only if enough other people did, too. If there was something you wanted, you strongly encouraged your friends to go get it too. I wasn't a subscriber, because I knew that I would hear about anything really cool that came up.

Now, it's just a big site offering lots of coupons, and it comes off more like spam.

If you read the article, the problem wasn't with Groupon, it was FTD. They directed the Groupon customers to a site with higher prices. So you got a discount on inflated prices.

Classic operation for United Online.

Groupon in my area kicks ass. I have saved 50-70% on greens fees, ski lift tickets, food at a lot of good places, massages, photography workshops, and lots of other stuff I probably would have paid for anyway.

I dig Groupon. There are a lot of spa services and things out in the suburbs being offered, but I just skip over them. I have gotten a number of good deals out of it. Our favorite restaurant, that happens to be 2 blocks down, has had a couple available. I still have ones waiting to be used for:
*Said restaurant
*A Well-reviewed pizza place
*$4 for 2 tickets and 2 medium popcorns at Brew n View
*Bike tune up (I do triathlons and need one any way)
*Ace Hardware
*Nice Indian restaurant
*Sushi restaurant we haven't tried yet
*Bakery a block away
*The bar I go to every week

I only buy groupons to places I already go to or have already been meaning to try. I also never let them expire. From what I hear, they are really good about refunding all your cash if you are about to miss the expiration date too. I follow them mostly through an RSS feed. Doesn't clutter my email and I don't miss any deals.

Groupon is somewhat of a crapshoot. For Akron/Canton, they have some crappy weeks but I was able to get a cheap year-long zoo membership for the family and a couple of good bar half-offs.
