How *should* someone react to seeing someone in a bear suit coming at them on a sidewalk?

Punch their lights out.

Sounds just like a web page full of StrongBad links.

Oh... That Flash mobbing. ;)

I was just assuming that some people who think this is stupid are the same sort of people that bar hop on the weekends.

I didn't mean to suggest that you, personally, would ever, in a million years, ever, ever, even think, much less do that sort of thing. I hope you can find it within yourself to stick a cork in your own righteous indignation at my assumption.

Rabbit Pearl Pink:
If anything they are evidence of the twisted liberal pseudo-activism that is currently farking us every which way.

Funny, Rabbit, cause here it was the twisted conservative pseudo-activists that were out long after the (major) shooting was done and the libs had gone home, knowing there was nothing to protest at that point. Seems that the didn't know when to come in and avoid heat-stroke.

lol actually "where" should have been "were", but the typo worked out.

Now, do I go to see Foghat or not? I can't even hear them and I live 3 blocks away. Must be a lame concert. Think I'll spontaneously masturbate instead.

2003-07-23 07:37:58 PM
Nah, "masturbation" should be "combust".

Foghat? *shudder*

Sounds like all the mtv crowd et all are thinking they are being cute and creative by emulating what they see on Jackass and that sort of thing. Does anyone else find that understandable but really sad?

What is really sad is the fact that things such as these provoke hostility in all the humorless missing links parading as human beings. All ideas on FARK are grouped into one of two categories:

1) I didnt think of it, therefore it is: (pick one) Stupid, Gay, Retarded, Liberal, Asinine, Pathetic, or Hippy Crap.

2) Where are the Boobies?

I had friends in High school that used to do things like this. The idea is that you are thrusting an awkward situation on a group of people in order to see how they react. The funny bits are not what the perpetrators are doing, but how the onlookers react.

You curmudgeons have no sense of humor. Why dont you organize a BIG class action law suit demand reparations from all things based in levity that are two far above your head for you to understand.

I guess the difference is most adults don't think that it is entirely "cute" to have people startle them or block entrances and such so that a bunch of what would seem like adults who miss cartoons saying, "oh man, that was GREAT! I acted like a robot with fifty other people for five minutes and I scared this one lady who didn't have a clue what I was doing. Man, when is our next planned spontaneous display?!?!"

To each his own but I can side with people who find that pretty.....dorky.

2003-07-23 07:46:38 PM
Underwhelmed I think you hit the point on the head. I think the reaction is what they are going for, in this I agree with you. And I might be going WAAAAAYYY out on a limb here but I am guessing the reaction they tend to go for is one of being startled or confused so that they can get their giggles off of displacing other people.

Now I am sure you know what I am saying is true since you yourself said it is for the reaction. I am just making the point that I find such things childish. You may disagree but that just makes you Mr. Poopy Pants.

Don't you just hate getting words wrong when you're trying to be patronising?

isn't fishrockcarving an anagram of Farking Corksucker?

hmmm maybe not ...

2003-07-23 07:42:07 PM Underwhelmed
The idea is that you are thrusting an awkward situation on a group of people in order to see how they react.

That's why people don't like it. For the most part, everyone likes good entertainment, but most people don't like being forced into something without their permission. Think of this as spam done in a public art fashion. People generally don't mind advertising unless it is thrust upon them in a situation where they are forced to react to it.

2003-07-23 07:51:01 PM
A large group of bored strangers gathering together at a predetermined place to contribute to a silly diversion? Yeah, what a bunch of idiots. I'm way too cool to participate in something like that.

Oh wait...

Oh, forget it. Three posts today and all I could come up with is stupid movie quotes.

2003-07-23 07:52:17 PM
Actually, my thinking is more along the lines of "Just becuase I don't find it all that amusing/entertaining/elightening/(insert any other desired affirmative emotional response) does not mean that it is stupid or dorky, nor does it make those who participate in it stupid or dorky. It just means that it does nothing for me."

And, it fits for all manner of diversion or entertainment.

Except Reality TV. People who enjoy it are morons.

2003-07-23 07:56:50 PM
Hmmm. That was directed at FC but the name did not go through.

2003-07-23 07:57:25 PM
I think the whole thing is pretty benign. I don't find it particularly funny, nor do I think it's offensive. It seems to me, though, that it's a little sad that originality these days (in art, performance, music etc) seems to most often take the form of something totally unconstructive, ie having no purpose or being weird or shocking just for the sake of being weird or shocking. I think it stems from a disturbing lack of truely progressive ideas.

Why is it that for every new and unusual idea, there are hundreds of assholes who can't wait to shoot it down?

I like to think of it as performance art, a bash mob.

Comic gold. *chuckle*

Same here. But get a load of this. It was in HIGH SCHOOL!
Walking through the whole mall wearing a 50 gallon garbage on your head can get some interesting looks. I was on the outside, my buddy had the honor of that indident.

I mean why else would anyone take the time to organize a gathering without some sort of tangible goal?

Reminds me of congress...

Fishcarver,

Actually I'm thinking more along the lines of just because I bug other people and fuel my entertainment by their discomfort I am going to attack people that bring up such points and ignore any truth to the words they speak.

2003-07-23 08:09:33 PM
Rabbit Yeah, but take heart. There is still the good stuff being created. The age we live in just allows more of the silly stuff to share in some limelight.

I, for one, love the pointless, meaningless creativities, the FARK cliche's, etc., etc. The everyday creativity, the "weaver's fancy," photoshops on Fark, they contribute to the creative environment, while letting everyone play. That is always good.

2003-07-23 08:15:09 PM
The flashbang grenade is mightier than the flash mob. A good phosphorus spewing projectile would give these community theater rejects a reason to leave the mall.

2003-07-23 08:15:55 PM
FC Was any one really made to be discomforted? And if they were, should they really be out on the streets where, historically, crowds appear? And do you really believe that the people participating in this do so to cause discomfort?

2003-07-23 08:18:15 PM
And, FC I didn't attack you.

Unless you like reality TV, in which case, How was I supposed to know that? and, Hey, I was only kidding. Reality TV is GREAT programming.

I think you are right. Please give us one of your progressive ideas, Rabbit_Pearl_Pink.

Regardless of the entertainment value or the level or creativity or the definition of "individuality," can't we all just come to one lowest-common-denominator-type conclusion?

It's really kinda dorky.

2003-07-23 08:23:34 PM
When I first heard of guerrilla theater, I thought, "Great! Cowboy hats and little motorcycles", but it turned out to be PEOPLE, all pretending to be Jeff Goldblume and pouring raw egg all over themselves...

2003-07-23 08:24:33 PM
I've got this great gag where I go up to people downtown, flash a giant friggin' pistol in their face, and scream, "Gimme your money asshat!"

You should see the expressions on their faces. They're usually so amused that they tip me for my performance.

2003-07-23 08:25:52 PM
It's really kinda dorky.

Okay, but in a cool way.

2003-07-23 08:29:13 PM
Reality TV shows suck.

The only ones that are cool are:

Temptation Island
Who wants to marry a millionaire
Big Brother

Am I the only person who has noticed that every single Fark thread EVER seems to devolve into a flame-war after a while? I mean, what is this latest bout of ranting and raving about anyway? A bunch of people going to a mall and pretending to be robots. . .And? What's the point? I don't see why people need to take sides on everything. I am perfectly indifferent to this subject. I understand it's normal for people to have differing opinions on even little, insignificant things. But I don't understand why people refuse to accept the fact other people can have differing opinions. And I'm really confused as to why they then have to go off spouting and spluttering and generally belittling the other person's opinion like a raving sociopath!

Oh, wait.

2003-07-23 09:01:42 PM
Oh come on. It's harmless fun. Lighten up people.

2003-07-23 09:06:01 PM
I think this is farking awesome. Bored people? Maybe. But how many mindless hours have you spent window shopping? Or just sitting on your fat ass getting fatter while watching TV?

At least they're doing SOMETHING, and it's causing cognitive dissonance in the masses. Food for the brain.

Sadly, my only progressive idea is that there are no more progressive ideas. Clearly, I won't be the one to end this trend. :(

Pen14 It sounds like you'd prefer Fark without the comments thread. Comments are for people to voice their opinions and sometimes they disagree. This doesn't neccessarily equal a flamewar. Would you rather everyone respond with "Neat."? I'm curious about exactly how you envsion this Flame-Free Fark.

This is nothing new. The Cacophony society has been doing stuff like this for years. One of the better known (and more regular) pranks is Santarchy where dozens of people get dressed up in Santa atire (the wackier the better) and spend the day roaming arround a major city, typically ending up with a pub crawl through the bar district. I've done Santarchy several times now and it really is a blast.

2003-07-23 09:30:13 PM
This is just Fluxus, a subdivision of it. Nothing wrong with that. Modern Dada. Dada happened after WW1, Flash Mobs occur in the aftermath of Gulf 2, or whatever the government is requiring me to call it these days. Now that's an interesting phenomenon.

2003-07-23 09:42:24 PM
Reminds me of something from a Samuel Delaney novel years ago. Street Theatre. One performance and gone. either you were there to see it or you weren't. Title anyone? Nova, Triton, something like that?

2003-07-23 09:44:43 PM
Well, I've kinda done something like this "flash mobbing" (I also read the headline wrong).

Me and a friend used to head to the local Sears in the mall and crash on their nice leather couch in their home entertainment area, while eating our Wendy's lunch. We did this every day for like a week or so.

Eventually, we decided to step it up a notch and brought a large pizza in there to eat. Sadly, the security lady kicked us out. :(

My latest plan? Get some friends, a 6-foot party sub, and crash the Sears entertainment center again during football season. The problem? No one wants to do this with me. Maybe I should phone up some of these flash mobbers? ;)

Perhaps I should have clarified my earlier statement. I can understand debates on more political issues, like Bush/Anti-Bush, or war/no war type of things, even when they descend from debating to insulting the other side. But I can't understand why anybody would debate over something as totally pointless as this. Granted, it's not a true flame-war. Closer to a brush fire, really.

And Rabbit_Pearl_Pink, if you want to draw me into a flame-war with you, I'm game.

I think Sex and the City is absolute garbage. One of the worst shows on television.

Urban kids have been fleecing stores this way for years.

I have absolutely no interest in a flame war. I just think it's interesting to hear people's opinions on things, even if it's pointless like this. I like to call it "Discussion" and I think it's the purpose of sites such as Fark. PS I couldn't care less what you think of Sex and the City. I like it and have no interest in debating its merits or lack thereof. Sorry.

2003-07-23 10:23:58 PM
Fine then. I think it is in our best interests to just drop the issue and forget we ever brought it up.

2003-07-23 10:32:08 PM
very cool idea. Its interesting in that it disrupts the mundane -- that *alone* makes it worthwhile, if i hear of one, Im going.

Why not cause a little confusion?
