Well, look at the public perception of Alaska since Palin came along. I'd say it's a pretty valid concern.

/Yeah, I get the joke, but as a former Alaskan I hate that Palin is now the first thing people thing of when someone says "Alaska".

Maybe they should have thought of that before electing him Governor.

The state isn't entirely filled with racist hillbillies.

Then again, most of the people who aren't racist hillbillies get the f*ck out of there as soon as they can.

I hate to break it to you, Mississippi, but a good portion of the South already thinks that. Every time a Southerner reads something bad about the state of education or something else in his/her state, we always end up at the same point: "Well, at least we aren't Mississippi."

This stuff surely won't help:

JACKSON, Miss. - A fight is brewing in Mississippi over a proposal to issue specialty license plates honoring Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

The Mississippi Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans wants to sponsor a series of state-issued license plates to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which it calls the "War Between the States." The group proposes a different design each year between now and 2015, with Forrest slated for 2014.

Forrest, a Tennessee native, is revered by some as a military genius and reviled by others for leading an 1864 massacre of black Union troops at Fort Pillow, Tenn. Forrest was a Klan grand wizard in Tennessee after the war.

Sons of Confederate Veterans member Greg Stewart said he believes Forrest distanced himself from the Klan later in life. It's a point many historians agree upon, though some believe it was too little, too late, because the Klan had already turned violent before Forrest left.

"If Christian redemption means anything - and we all want redemption, I think - he redeemed himself in his own time, in his own actions, in his own words," Stewart said. "We should respect that."

State Department of Revenue spokeswoman Kathy Waterbury said legislators would have to approve a series of Civil War license plates. She said if every group that has a specialty license plate wanted a redesign every year, it would take an inordinate amount of time from Department of Revenue employees who have other duties.

SCV has not decided what the Forrest license plate would look like, Stewart said. Opponents are using their imagination.

A Facebook group called "Mississippians Against The Commemoration Of Grand Wizard Nathan Forrest" features a drawing of a hooded klansman in the center of a regular Mississippi car tag.

Why the hell is the South so hell-bent on re-fighting or re-imagining the Civil War?

Whether you call it "The War of Northern Aggression", "The War Between the States", or even "Them Uppity Slaves Forgot What's Good for 'em" -
YOU FARKING LOST.

To "celebrate" the Confederacy - or officers within it - to me, is tantamount to treason. Maybe not in the "lending aid or succor to an enemy" way, but in the "rooting against your country" way.

What happened to "America First", you inbred racist yokel hicktards?

Subby, you are spreading lies and slander. Mississippi does not have hillbillies. Hillbillies, by their very name, come from hilly or mountainous areas. Mississippi has rednecks and as Dr Dreidel points out, racist yokel hicktards.

Barbour is, at his best, abysmal. The main reason he won his last election (other than our 'we only vote Republican' blowhards) is that the man running against him was just as loony. The 'Democrat' ran on a 'bring prayer back in school' and so on platform.

It was like if Palin and Beck debated each other for a position.

Me and wife are working on plans to move to NJ or NY. I hate the idea of running but this place is just so godawful. Not to mention my health.

My only hope is in the youth here...

I don't know. I moved to the Atlanta metro area from the Midwest, and frequently have to go downstate for political functions, and the South isn't any more racist than the Midwest was. They just aren't as good at hiding it, and it isn't as institutionalized. They hate gays way more down here, though.

As an Alabama resident, we praise god for Louisiana and Mississippi. If it wasn't for these two states, we'd be dead last in everything.

Isn't this the governor that hangs out with a well known white supremest?

We don't give Mississippi the bad rep, Mississippi does it on its own.

As a northerner living in the deep south, here's the main difference I've found:

Up north, whites, blacks, Hispanics, etc. self segregate where they live, but will socialize and eat at the same places. In the south, ethnic group self-segregation extends to restaurants, retail, supermarkets, etc.

And it's worth mentioning that there is a small, but very vocal group minority of whites who cannot get over the Civil War.

As a Louisianian, I usually count on Mississippi to keep my people from being #50 in most stats. However, Barbour did a pretty farking awesome job following Katrina. There were times I caught myself wondering how better off we'd be if we had him in charge.

Yeah, really. And I disagree with virtually every word out of his mouth.

FarkedOver: What is wrong with the south?

Clearly, dumb shiat only happens in the South. The rest of the country is based in rational behavior. I mean, yankee Delaware managed to support a level-headed candidate like Christine O'Donnell. The liberated West managed to produce Sharon Angle. Do I need to mention the derp saturation levels of NY an California?

I understand that the South is everyone's favorite whipping post, but the fact is that none of you are any better. Search your feelings - you know this to be true.
