I won't. I've got my towel.

A class M flare is not a Carrington event. Not even close. Plus we haven't had much in the way of solar activity lately, so the magnetosphere is very strong.

So actually don't panic.

Are the STEREO satellites able to broadcast their view back to us in semi-realtime?

I think last nights thread on this would have been a better green.

Oh, btw, Don't look now, but 1158 blew another m-class flare today.

So.... SPF-15 or SPF-5,000?

I think the light 30 gauge aluminum foil instead of the heavier tin foil.

And there's another C-Class flare.

2011-02-14 06:45:58 PM
And another.. This one seems to be spiking pretty good.

is it time to panic yet, or do I have to wait 'till later tonight?

Weaver95: is it time to panic yet, or do I have to wait 'till later tonight?

Storm won't hit us until around 6AM Eastern, and its not much of a storm anyway.

Article says Maybe a K7 start with a K6 average.

K7-

Power systems: voltage corrections may be required, false alarms triggered on some protection devices.

Spacecraft operations: surface charging may occur on satellite components, drag may increase on low-Earth-orbit satellites, and corrections may be needed for orientation problems.

Other systems: intermittent satellite navigation and low-frequency radio navigation problems may occur, HF radio may be intermittent, and aurora has been seen as low as Illinois and Oregon (typically 50° geomagnetic lat.)**.

I was all set to use the line 'honey, the world is gonna end tonight once the solar flare hits so you HAVE to go down on me'. but now I can't DO that can I? no! because YOU had to be all reasonable!

blah. thanks for nuthin man.

Well, on the bright side, if these C class flares keep up for the next 48 hours, its gonna be a lot warmer than expected this weekend.

No. It takes days for a flare to reach earth. (whats left of it anyway)

The X-rays and light get here in 7.* minutes. Everything else takes a bit longer.

2 more C-class flares. Damn that is one busy sunspot.

It's already affecting subspace communication. They are expected to be down another 2.3 solar days.

So, according TFA, this relatively weak storm will warm the Atlantic enough to cause significant increases in rainfall in Europe and Africa.

But climate change is still man's fault?

For some reason, every time I refresh I keep expecting to see an X-14 spike.

I don't think we've had an X-class earth directed flare in the modern age. Even the Carrington event was not a head on hit, per the illustration of the sunspot from his viewing at the time.

As much as I loved the story... why is there a picture of a spaceship on the front? No space travel or anything involved in it whatsoever.

We're supposed to be in the 60's Friday. Might See 70 now.

I finally got part of it to load.

Sunspot 1158 swelled up like a water balloon over a 4 hour period then popped, unleashing an M6.6 category blast DIRECTLY at the Earth. It is traveling at 1119 km/s, and should hit the Earth in 37 hours, or 5-6AM Mountain Standard Time. This is the largest solar flare we have seen in quite a while, and it should produce exciting results for us travelers on the spaceship Earth.

Update: 8:30am MST

After Sunspot 1158 unleashed the reported M6.6 category solar flare it opened up with full-auto and has unleashed a series of 4 C class solar flares. See more below for additional information of affects here on Earth.

Update: 12:10pm MST

Sunspot

So basically, the sun just popped a giant sun-zit.

Who cares? The spaceships on the covers of 70's sci-fi were often the best things about the books.
