(Yahoo)   Welcome to Ziebach, Country SD. Which, according to the latest census, is the poorest county in America with more than 60% residents living below the poverty line. Why yes, there IS an Indian reservation there, how did you guess?   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 140

Been through that area a couple times. Basically the entire county is part of the larger Cheyenne River reservation which, if anyone remembers, is the same reservation that got hit really, really badly about a year ago by a large storm.

Teknowaffle: Let them open a casino and make the other 40% poor.

I see the sarcasm but wanted to point out one more small part. New Mexico Indians who opened casinos are having an incredibly hard time making any money/profit and borrowed most of the money to open the casinos so the tribe(s) as a entity are also going to be out the funds or land they put up as collateral when their desert oasis goes belly-up.

That reservation is basically in BFE. It's far too isolated to put in a big casino or any of the other usual tricks. Plus South Dakota has pretty liberal gaming laws. Every gas station there has a couple of video poker machines and call itself a casino.

True, but so did many other cultures and minority groups throughout history, what makes them special?

They're living in a county with 2,500 residents, in the middle of farking nowhere. How could they not be in poverty?

I've been through the area and know it fairly well. There is a lot of opportunity for agriculture there, and it had really good conditions for wheat farming, but no one is willing do it. Most of the tribal land is completely wasted because they won't use it properly. Cattle is not a very high value per acre when compared to wheat and barley.

I know people who grow wheat near the reservation and they can't find anyone willing to work. The main reason that unemployment is so high is that no one wants a job. The Indians who do have the desire to work leave the reservation early and go elsewhere.

2011-02-14 11:25:18 AM
Damn, I though, I was bad, for using, too many commas.

It truly is amazing. We have small third-world countries right here in the middle of America. Shannon Co., South Dakota actually held this title for a long time. If you're from Detroit and want to feel better about your home town, head on down to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It's like a farking war zone. They have constant 80%+ unemployment, and substance abuse is rampant (along with all the fun things that come with unemployment, poverty and substance abuse - child and elder neglect, domestic violence, rape, suicide, etc.) It's really a sad situation with no easy answers.

They live on reservations. They should move to where there are jobs.

Ah home.

My home was a mile north and three miles east of the Ziebach county line in Eagle Butte but Middle School was on the other side of the line so I'm getting a kick out...

The numbers between Dewey and Ziebach as a little skewed, the Tribal and Federal employees for Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe all live up in North Eagle Butte so their decent income figures into Dewey County's numbers while the super poor tribal members are stuck mostly in Ziebach county.

BIA teacher with a masters in Science start at 62,000 with subsidized housing for example, they'll be up in Dewey County.

Our neighbors are from Vietnam. They didn't have a pot to piss in when they got here. They own four businesses now. Of course they are staffed by family members that work their asses off six days a week. But they've made it work. Education is stunningly important to them. Maybe it's time to buy a bus ticket and get the fark out of South Dakota.

Some of us did.

My Facebook friends from back there are about 1/3rd on the Reservation, 1/3rd former or active duty military and 1/3rd off the Reservation with eduction and decent jobs.

I read a novel called Hanta Yo this past summer. It was a fictional account of a Lakotah Shirtman that was used as a canvas to show how the Lakotah tribes lived prior to the white man coming to the plains. (I strongly recommend this book to anyone enjoys native american stories. If you can make it through the first hundred pages and learn the cadence of the text, you will be in for one of the best books you've ever read. It's like reading a dream.)

As I got close to the end (when the white man came with his fire water) I couldn't help but think that if the settlers had known what I knew about the tribe (and other tribes) they would have embraced the Indians. But they didn't and destroyed an amazing culture.

Also, as recently as May of 2010, braves from the Lakotah tribe earned their feathers by counting coup against the US Army.

2011-02-14 11:34:08 AM
What's with these shiftless indians? Laying around all day drinking fire water? They need to wake up and see the smoke signals. Free land, and now what do they want?

2011-02-14 11:34:45 AM
Well, this land was pretty big from coast to coast
But not big enough to leave alone our Indian hosts
So with one hand on the trigger and the other on a pen
We took away their real estate, then said
You're finally free to do just what you'd like
This stinking piece of desert should be all right
Unless we find out later that there's oil or gold
In which case you'll do just what you're told

Step right up to the roulette wheel, White Man, if you've got the nerve
See the pretty lights on the slot machine?
You'll get what you deserve

Well without any reservation
We put them on reservations
Now they're taking reservations
At the casino hotel...
