anybody else see this guardian article from earlier in which human rights groups accuse the egyptian *military* of kidnapping and torturing protesters?

If Mubarak isn't leaving Egyptian state TV is going to face a major crackdown since they've switched to pro-protester today:

7.27pm GMT: Reports are that now even state television, Nile TV, are screening live footage of the pro-democracy demonstrators in Tahrir Square and elsewhere - an abrupt change from the pro-regime footage it had been showing in recent days, including interviews with supposed "protesters" who made wild claims of US and Mossad involvement.

Jeebus, this guy is really taking his time. I left CNN on in the other room and cleaned the entire master bathroom and half of the bedroom while I was waiting.

It looks like they found the Mubarak tape.

Woo! Got sound. Watching now.

Mubarak seems to never go on before 11pm Cairo time. It could be a few more minutes.

Fireproof: Jeebus, this guy is really taking his time. I left CNN on in the other room and cleaned the entire master bathroom and half of the bedroom while I was waiting.

So if he waits long enough, you'll have a really clean house. Not a bad deal.

2011-02-10 03:20:14 PM
If Mubarak says anything other than that he's stepping down, I predict this will end very very VERY badly.

No time to html-ify, but yeah, there have been some reports, that's one reason why the people on the ground still have questions about the Army.

Really? *sigh*

2011-02-10 03:28:18 PM
Well, I'm glad to hear this nonsense is all over then. I'm sure that Mubarak's handpicked close friend Suleiman will be nothing like Mubarak and will not consult with him nor will he be any sort of puppet or tyrant. I'm certain that he will serve the people, fix poverty, and release all of the political prisoners. Yep, we can go ahead and close the books on this one.

Yeh, I oopsed. Fixed above. My first thought was, no way. Second thought was, maybe special police in army unis? Third thought: small section/unit of the army still loyal to Mubby...

If it's genuine, and he isn't folding, the army's going to have some tough decisions to make. But I suspect they already know what's up.

Amusing, but this is not the Cold War (which both JFK and Reagan were confronting). Relative to the standoff with the Russians, we DO NOT have a dog in this fight.

Egyptian State TV is talking about corruption of regime members. Wow.

Seriously, it's catchy as hell and taught me a couple of words in Arabic.

Control must be in their hands now. From Alan Fisher: "Supreme council on Armed forces has only held 3 open sessions in its history: 1967, 1973, and today". That says enough.

Yeah, I've been kinda wondering about that possibility, too. Not quite as great an ending as a Budd Dwyer redux, but an okay one.

Just hope it's a resignation and not more bullshiat bandaid measures - as has been pointed out upthread, an awful lot of folks are pretty emotionally whipped up right now....

You're right, we don't have a dog in this fight. We have $1.5 billion dolloars in this fight.

You know that song's lyrics actually dismiss people acting for political change, right?

Forty minutes behind the rumored start time, and looking like he might just be saying that he will be lifting emergency law. Possible transfer of power to Suleiman.

I went back and bolded that for you since you apparently missed it. Trying to compare a revolution in Egypt to the Cold War between the US and Russians is beyond apples and oranges.

And, BTW, CNN just grabbed a protester at random and asked him if he thought Obama was doing a good job with this situation, and he responded "VERY" and no one standing around him seemed to disagree. He answered like it was obvious.
