OK, put this story next to this one:

The food fix is in

So in the second article, certain foods are described as being pretty much a drug, stimulating a human which in turn increases a desire for that food. How many of those foods are also considered unhealthy? The governemnt already shows a bias for some drugs over others, alcohol and tobacco are readily available, while marijuana, hash and other substances are criminalized. How long before the Shredded Wheat people line some pockets in congress and we end up having to buy Frosted Flakes by the ounce? Call me crazy but if someone said in 1930 that growing hemp would be illegal within 10 years, people would have called them crazy.

Boy, I sure am glad the Republicans are the party of personal responsibility and smaller government.

Can someone please name me on spending bill Bush has vetoed?

2003-07-21 11:59:19 PM
Is this war also similar to the war on drugs?

2003-07-22 12:31:18 AM
"You can't leave addressing obesity solely to personal responsibility," contends Margo Woota.

Margo, you are a World Class Asshatette.

This is the dumbest farking thing I've ever read and no one should ever take anything you say seriously...ever.

As Congress wrangles over expanding Medicare to cover prescription drugs, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) wants to make sure obesity-related drugs are part of any deal. Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) wants to broaden Medicaid, which helps the poor, to include coverage for medicine that treats obesity.

These farkwits don't give a crap about you. All they care about is expanding the dependency of the citizens on government.

I think they should put Sen. Ted Kennedy in charge of this issue, fat fark that he is.

2003-07-22 12:35:24 AM
Bush has not vetoed a single spending bill, Quick1.

However, if there were a Democrat-controlled House and Senate, that probably wouldn't be the case.

How about if you name the spending bills you think he should have vetoed?

How about if you name the spending bills you think he should have vetoed?

He opposed federalizing airport security workers and then agreed to do it anyway. He resisted extending unemployment benefits and then reversed course. He was against a prescription drug benefit under Medicare and now he favors one. He came out against a big new Cabinet agency to direct homeland security and then proposed his own huge new Cabinet agency to direct homeland security.

The same thing happened under the "conservative" reign of Nixon. More government and spending than the previous administration. More disregard for the law based on the excuse that the emergency requires it.

However, if there were a Democrat-controlled House and Senate, that probably wouldn't be the case.

At least they wouldn't be deficit spending like a 16-year-old girl going shopping daddy's credit card. They would have at least been nice enough to raise our taxes first. :)

The same thing happened under the "conservative" reign of Nixon. More government and spending than the previous administration.

The same thing happened during the reign of the gipper. As Reagan publicly proclaimed that his policy would reduce government and make it less intrusive, the bureaucracy grew.

As a matter of fact, I've never seen such a huge upswing in government scale as has taken place recently under W. It is all part of big lie; the GOP doesn't care about making government less of a burden to the people. They are only interested in influencing policy to the advantage of their corporatist cabal of leaders.

Not that I'm defending the Dems... But at least the Democratic constituency forces it to be somewhat more honest.

2003-07-22 01:34:28 AM
With the above said, props to Rep. Adam Putnam (r) for trying to make our school lunches healthier. Personally, I think the government should set some national PE standards too, but I guess that makes me a pinko.

Personally, I think the government should set some national PE standards too, but I guess that makes me a pinko.

Just so long as they get to keep playing dodgeball.

2003-07-22 02:53:14 AM
Do they actually still let kids play dodgeball? I would have thought that fear of personal injury lawsuits would have put an end to that by now.

2003-07-22 03:03:28 AM
Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) wants to broaden Medicaid, which helps the poor, to include coverage for medicine that treats obesity.

I have always wondered how obese poor people maintain their gargantuan size.

Note to government asshats

stay the FARK outa my kitchen as well as my bedroom.

oh, and Ted Kennedy surrenders.

2003-07-22 08:07:35 AM
well you see armchair political viewers - you have to make -concessions- to the dems if you want your gop bills to pass. some little asshat switched sides if you'll remember, and that greatly changed the game.

its the 'other' cost we have to pay for the department of homeland security, the war in iraq, and our tax cuts.

now enjoy your $400.

as for fat farks: why not. the government holds our hands enough as is. what's the difference between penalizing big tobacco and big sugar? (and dont give me that shiat that nicotine is addictive and woe is them - tons of people are casual smokers, and people have kicked crack for farks-sake. nicotine ain't the end-all)

we as a society -need- to step back a bit and let natural selection work. we've already got enough problems because we aren't thinning the gene pool anymore. not that it'll happen, because we're 'civilized'. but here's hoping mars will be better.

2003-07-22 08:11:03 AM
I don't know if national PE standards would do the trick, kitschnsync. They'd never set them high enough to really do anything. Right now in NY, kids have to do a mile run test every semester. A mile. So the fat kids run it in 14 minutes and get a failing grade, the fit kids run it in 5-8 and don't, and that's it. Fat kids won't be motivated by government standards to be in shape or to stop eating food soaked in grease, it's something you gotta do for yourself. The fat kids become the fat people, and it's not because they didn't do well in gym. They just aren't motivated to be healthy.
If you run 5 miles a day, you can basically eat whatever you want. If you don't, and you still eat whatever you want, you're a fattie. And then you sue the restaurants because they allowed you to eat so much? Stupid.
I personally like to work out 3 hours a day, then go home and eat Ben and Jerry's by the pint.

/still not a fattie

2003-07-22 08:14:36 AM
When the government starts talking about regulating food, I get nervous. What do they know that they're not telling us? Is something catastrophic about to happen? You guys do what you have to, but I'll be stockpiling ribeyes and rocky road.

2003-07-22 08:17:30 AM
Yeah GEAH for sure

"You can't leave addressing obesity solely to personal responsibility," contends Margo Wootan, the director of nutrition policy for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. That's especially the case when it comes to the temptations facing children, she said, adding that "carrots don't come with a Nemo toy."

Yeah Margo. That's what we pay for you to do. Feed us. Give me a farking break.

Perhaps a nosedive into a cheese-laden monster burger that left you bloated and regretful?

If so, it may not have been your fault -- or at least not yours alone.

Absolutley. I am not responsible for controlling my own impulses. Sounds like time to get an sttorney to help me out - but then again, if I am so irresponsible, how can I be entrusted to do that? Or type on my computer? *looks over shoulder* - yup - here they come now...

2003-07-22 08:17:45 AM
Each town or neighbour hood should have a government appointed bully. He is trained and equipped by a central agency, prehaps an section of the Army. It is his job to mercilessly taunt and hassle overweight kids, inflicting mental and physical torture at a strict level defined by the percentage difference between the subjects ideal weight and their current weight. Thus, a child who is only a few pounds over weight would get some friendly joshing once a week, whereas a obese child who is twice his ideal weight would be beaten daily, have his belongings stolen and thrown into canals, and be whipped with wet towels at least twice an hour. Pain and fear is the only real motivator that will work in situations like these.

"You can't legislate health and fitness," said Rep. Mary Bono (R-Calif.),

"You can't legislate against stupidity" - Jesse Ventura

'Nuff said

2003-07-22 08:20:37 AM

"YOOOOHOOOOOO!!! Over here!!! What about me?"

2003-07-22 08:21:38 AM
I eat your environment then sue it for having allowed me to eat it! Hah!

2003-07-22 08:21:43 AM
Eat less calories, do more aerobic exercise. If you eat 250 less calories a day than usual (ie: 2 cookies and a can of soda) and walk an extra 10 minutes a day, you will loose 1/2 a pound a week. To maintain the weight once it is lost eat the pyramid, be aware of portion contol. You will feel and look better.

If you have a high school diploma, the government already told you this, in health class.

2003-07-22 08:22:26 AM
I don't see how there is really an obesity epidemic in this country.

Of course, I have been sitting in my house watching only network television and major studio motion pictures, and reading men's magazines. (Sure, the King of Queens and that Belushi guy are a little chubby, but that's hardly an epidemic, especially considering their hot wives- plus they could get thin just by eating sandwiches all day for a couple months.)

I guess what I'm saying is that as long as there are enough thin people to put on TV, movies, and magazines, I ain't all that worried about it.

2003-07-22 08:22:46 AM
LMAO faethe, so true

2003-07-22 08:22:59 AM
Note to Congress:

Investigate today's FARK burger thread. They're conspiring to develop weapons of mass colon obstruction.

2003-07-22 08:30:40 AM
weight watchers is now a govt mandated program?

Fat people are farked

2003-07-22 08:31:30 AM
I think they should put Sen. Ted Kennedy in charge of this issue, fat fark that he is.

Nah, they should put that hypocritical tub of lard Bill Bennett in charge of this. He's already made his fortune as a public scold.

2003-07-22 08:38:34 AM
"You can't leave addressing [problem] solely to personal responsibility," contends Margo Wootan

Thus crumbles America. No need to worry about an empire or expanding our influence in the middle east or east Asia... it's all over now.

2003-07-22 08:39:47 AM
One proposal in Congress adds fruits and vegetables to student diets

another gives business tax breaks to let employees exercise at work

one lawmaker wants to shield fast-food and chain restaurants from civil lawsuits blaming them for overweight customers

Six states have legislation that would require nutrition labeling at fast-food or chain restaurants

make a priority out of training grants for health professionals combatting obesity

tax or other incentives for companies "to increase the activity levels and improve the nutrition of their employees" by encouraging walking or biking to work and engaging in physical activity during work hours.

Etc., etc. I think these are all decent ideas. Why all the hubub, bub?

2003-07-22 08:44:30 AM
Hey all you fat farks. You wanna get rid of obesity?

EAT LESS.

EXERCISE MORE.

How farking hard is this to understand? And while I'm no lightweight myself, at least I'm DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

News flash. That miracle diet isn't, you won't lose 50 pounds overnight, it is going to take a lot of time and a lot of effort. But since most people in this stupid country can't be bothered to get off the couch to find the remote, I guess we have to get others to do the thinking for us.

2003-07-22 08:44:38 AM
Bu-haaaaa-haaaaa-haaaaa.
So much for keeping and/or kicking the government out of our 'personal' lives. Once again, we will be under some republican mandate ---kind of like the drug testing that spread like wildfire under Raygun. So--- let me guess. We'll get a "fat test" now prior to employment and those who are 'clinically' obese will not get the job. Otherwise, they might get the classification of being 'disabled', and that would be harmful to the employer. Oh weight--- I think they already get that.

[I'd still like to know when a national religion is going to be chosen.]

This is total silliness. My theoretical answer to the problem is in the public water supply.
All that recycled water cannot be filtered of hormones and other chemicals that encourage 'growth'. They are finding estrogen, antibiotics as well as other 'drugs' sitting in the water supply. We're fattening up our kids as well as ourselves, just like we fatten up the cows.

I was a chow-hound when I was a kid and a teenager. ...forced to eat everything on my plate or I got another tablespoon (every 10 minutes) of whatever gruel my mother made for the day.... and then I could sit there forever until it was done.
I didn't weigh 105 pounds wet when I graduated high school. I had a PE teacher ask me if I was anorexic. I laughed but was quite insulted, because I could sit and eat 6-8 tacos in a sitting. We're talking 2 Big Mac suppers for this 'little girl'.
PE was a waste of time.... even way back when. I absolutely hated it, even though I was fit. Give me my bicycle and I went everywhere.

My kids-- -skinny as rails. Good genes? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it's because we live in the mountains where our water comes from a fresh source that hasn't been contaminated with garbage, hormones, chemicals other than chlorine--- etc.
My sister's kids should be skinny, too then--- since my whole family were walking sticks. Nope. Two of them are big-uns. Public water since the day they were born.
You ever see really fat babies that are breast-fed? That formula isn't formula--- it's growth hormone. When mixed with all those chemicals found in water, it's forcing the body to turn all the energy into growing, as opposed to using only what the body needs.

Amazingly enough--- no flouride in my water either. No cavities in my kids mouth. GASP! Oh-- I've not had one either. It's mutiny!

Government= constantly fiddling and meddling. It seems to me that the republicans are constantly preaching that they are removing the government from our personal affairs. I fell under that spell in college until I learned it as FALSE. They are removing government from the affairs of business and increasing their prodding in my life. Get a freakin' clue.
Total Information Awareness, pal.

This is a great book which has helped me a lot:

Fat Wars

Not a diet, but rather a stronger understanding of how your body works.

SimplyEdie: I'd still like to know when a national religion is going to be chosen.

Looks like JC is running a close second to Mammon, followed by Jews in third place (but rapidly and secretly gaining power). My guess, though, is that Mammon already owns a majority in Congress and the executive branch, so therein lies the safe money if you're a betting man.

2003-07-22 09:04:45 AM
"You can't legislate health and fitness," said Rep. Mary Bono (R-Calif.), the sponsor of one of the measures. "But I feel it is critical that we do something."

Oh for the love of God, this is what we get for giving the women the right to vote.

Has anyone read Frederick Pohl's The Merchant's War?

My favorite Family Guy line:

Meg: Brian, you look so thin! How do you do it?

Brian: Here's a hint: PUT DOWN THE FORK.

On agreeing to the fruit and vegetable amendment-- will the clerk of the house read the vote tally...

Ok, we have 222 "Aye" Votes, 200 "Nay" Votes, 12 not voting, and Mr. Nadler of New York voted "Donuts".

2003-07-22 09:20:11 AM
Oh, the fat people. The fat people on the F train, on the G train, on the 7 train, all in my lap because they all think their profile is closer to a fiat than a Mack. Fat people on the M57, fat people in their fat SUVs on the highways. Fark the fat people Time to treat the fat people like they are: freaks. A little social encouragement in the form of ridicule and shame should do the trick. Hey, fatty: put down the burger, go for a walk. Turn off the tv, go for a walk. That's that.

Regarding legislation: If the public dime is paying for the schools, and the food in them, then isn't it also an obvious extension that the public should decide what food is served? Maybe it's not such a great idea--as Reagan famously did--to classify Ketchup as a vegetable? Maybe it's not fascism to require fresh fruit INSTEAD of ALL DESSERTS in school....

"You can't leave addressing obesity solely to personal responsibility," contends Margo Wootan, the director of nutrition policy for the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Wow, at least ONE person understands that what we need is more government programs to help micromanage our daily lives. I'm sure my weight problem will be licked before I can say "Jack Robinson," and the best part is, the government will do it for me, saving me the trouble of getting up off my pillowy ass.

It seems to me that the republicans are constantly preaching that they are removing the government from our personal affairs. I fell under that spell in college until I learned it as FALSE. They are removing government from the affairs of business and increasing their prodding in my life.

This is why many non-religous Republicans would be better off voting for cadidates from the Libertarian party. They have just as many wackos, but at least they're not going to mandate what you will eat and fark.

2003-07-22 09:27:15 AM
VORPAL, don't you think it's a little unfair to pick on Jerrold Nadler using an outdated picture of him? He's lost 80+ pounds in the last year. Not like he acts like Bill Bennett, who scolds everyone for being immoral and having no self-discipline...

Has anyone read Frederick Pohl's The Merchant's War?

Is that the one where there is such massive overproduction that the "richer" higher class members of society have less, whereas "poor" people must buy, buy, buy, consume, consume, consume to use up the surplus?

I've been trying to rememeber what that was for ages, so if it isn't ol' Fred, anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?

2003-07-22 09:43:04 AM
Just what I need. First they try to tell me who I can fark, then they tell me I can't marry who I want, now they tell me I can't farking eat what I want.
Assholes.
