Sony:

Nice hardware but with the most evil and incompetent customer support you've ever seen (plus a rootkit every year).

I have no idea how to leverage this information.

i'm honestly curious- do any of the fark lawyer types know how this will effect Sony's legal actions? does it have any effect?

So does that mean they are suing themselves?

It's actually not the root key, but the old dongle master key and its relatively obsolete- which is why the tweet has the sarcastic message "Lemme guess...you sank my battleship?"

It's still funny, though.

Also, there's the little matter of this.

First, my mistake: it's not outdated. In before Sony sues us all.

All this key does is allow a device to enter service mode. Nothing fancy.

Me too. Seems like the first couple google links said it was a big deal and Sony was scrambling to get it down, in this thread I'm reading it's old news and doesn't matter. Personally I doubt allowing homebrew software is that big a deal, assuming that's what "service mode" is. If it does let people bypass the disc checks and play pirated games, Sony done shot themselves in the foot with hollow tip bullets.

Never gonna get a PS3 anyway. I keep my system manipulation about as severe as letting my brother recover my gamertag and glitch 1 or 2 On Demand titles so we can play together off the same copy.

It kinda does, it allows dongles like usbps3break to load custom firmware which in turn allows you to backup games, runs emulators and play downloaded games. There are ways to do it without a dongle now but they are still useful for downgrading operating systems and repairing bricked systems.

D_Evans45: Also this article makes it appear that Sony can just put out a software update to stop these kinds of things.

This master key allows anyone to sign a copy of their game, be it homebrew or pirated. This allows anyone to make/clone games that will play on an unadulterated PS3, as opposed to one that has been jailbroken or rooted so that it doesn't check games to see if they are signed.

Sony cannot simply change the code. All games ever sold and all PS3's ever produced would have to be modified if the key was changed. That is an impossibility.

Nope... the genie is out of the bottle.
All they can hope to do is slow it down a little each update.

2011-02-09 04:28:29 PM
Also, the twittered key is not the root key (it's the dongle service mode key), is old and doesn't work in the latest firmware. The ones I posted are the actual root signing keys, and let you sign your own games/software to run it on the PS3. Could also be used to sign a pirated game, of course, but they took away OtherOS (among other things) after people payed for it. Steal from every PS3 owner and it's only right that we'll take back what they took away. The collateral damage of increased piracy is a side-effect. I don't condone piracy, but I also don't condone bait-and-switch marketing.
/Haven't bought anything Sony since the CD rootkit in 2005.
