1. His name-which is unoffensive but ethnically distinct.

Uh, "distinct?" or made-up nonsense that will hold him back the rest of his life competing in a world that will judge him on that alone and would, in fact, be racist if white folks insisted that black kids be ostracized from mainstream society by insisting they be given such ridiculous names?

OK, if I understand your run-on sentence correctly, you are saying that is OK to make fun of an ethically distinct name, because society will do so as well. As long as the prejudice is socially acceptable and widespread, then it is OK to join in.

It is very common for people to give their kids unique, often made up names. But is only the black parents who are accused of 'holding back their kids'. You seem to be justifying your racist views by hiding behind society's racist views.

I am not claiming to be immune to it. I just want to make sure that everyone is aware of their bias.

How is it "racist" when it's factually accurate?

Go sell head-in-the-sand political correctness and sensitivity someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

My wife gets home from work around 3PM. My son walked home from middle school and got home around 2:30. We live in a very nice, safe neighborhood full of single family houses. No apartments or town houses. As he was coming through the park (shortcut), he came across a homeless person on a bench yelling at himself, the trees, the basketball court and eventually, my son. My son was smart enough to ignore the guy and went home. He called me and my wife and told me what happened. That night we went out and got him a cell phone. When my daughter got to middle school, she had a phone too. It's a measure of security instead of being helicopter parents.

These idiots need to buy their stupid Ty'Ge a KAJEET phone. It is a company that sells phone just to kids. You can restrict phone calls coming in by literally setting it so that only certain numbers can call, and all others get a message that the phone is not accepting calls. Same goes with texts. I got a Kajeet for my stepson and it was awesome.

I can think of quite a few kids who would be held back in life due to their white hippie parents naming them Starduster, or Mary-Wana, or Candi(seriously, WTF parents, do you want your daughter dancing naked on a pole by the time she's 16?).

Names are a perfectly acceptable thing to make fun of. It's not an inherent part of who you are, you can easily use a nickname or a short name, and it isn't a difficult thing to legally change.

So, it's perfectly acceptable to make fun of someone's name.

Latinwolf: dittybopper: Latinwolf: Why should that matter other than to confirm your preconceived stereotypes?

Because bastardy is highly correlated to crime and poverty. Yelling "RACIST!" at anyone who points that out doesn't change the reality of the situation, and actually helps to perpetuate it by suppressing debate on the subject.

Bullshiat. Hasd this been a white family, there whould have been no questions about where's daddy even if this family lvied in a trailer park. You got certain persons on Fark who look for any excuse to bash non white people (like yourself since you have a history of doing that very thing), who then, when called out on it, start complaining about people yelling racism.

That's because statistically, the out-of-wedlock birth rate among non-Hispanic Whites is 27.8%, but for non-Hispanic Blacks it's 71.6%. Or is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention racist also?

And don't put words in my mouth, Ahs-weep-ay: I specifically bemoan this horrid state of affairs whenever I bring it up. Like I did in this very thread:

dittybopper Quote 2011-02-08 09:41:38 AM
...
I wonder how many great doctors, scientists, artists, and leaders never get the chance to fulfill their destiny because endemic poverty, violence, and the attitude that bastardy is the norm (which is correlated to the first two problems) prevents them from flourishing academically and socially to their full potential.

It's a farkin' crime.

But that doesn't fit the narrative of "Hey, you're a *RACIST*", so it gets conveniently ignored. The person who can sling mud the best wins, right? Actually solving the root problems doesn't matter to people like you, who are more concerned with the appearance of creating a just and equitable society than actually *DOING* it.

Came to say this. My 8 year old son recently asked for a cell phone and if he could have a facebook page because the spoiled rotten princess that goes to his daycare has them. I told him not until he's a teenager.

RE: Ty'Ge

Mr. Le Pew and I were watching a TV program. Woman has a baby in prison, and is first showing it to her other child. She tells the child what the baby's name is. Mr. Le Pew looks at me wide-eyed and says "What the fark did she name that kid? Ice Cream?" "No, honey, she named it Ashley, ASH-LEE." "Well, Jesus, the names they're hanging on kids today, it makes sense, in a perverted way. I just wish you could hear the world through my ears."

What the hell is up with black people and naming their kids. Ty'ge? really?

Crazy black people names that I have heard:

La-a. As in Ladasha.

Vagina, a 14 year old was pregnant and kept hearing the word vagina and thought it sounds pretty. Vagina.

That and for renting apartments. Demarcus-nope, Lamarr-nope, Jermarcus-nope, Laquisha-nope, Nateshia-nope. It is almost like you could take a normal name and add a de, la, je or na and it becomes a black name. Denick, Jejeff, lalori. Dabarack?

here4few: My 10 year old has had a cell phone for the last two years. She walks a mile to swim or library. People use to not care about kids walking. Now it is a big deal. She has more than once had police called on a "small" child walking alone. She isn't short she is actually taller though skinner than most average children. She also has been freaked out because one of these "concerned" callers kept driving up and down to watch and protect her. This lady was so afraid that a stranger might stealer her. My daughter called the police, apparently after the crazy lady but before the police officer.

If she went to school she would walk, there is no walkers in our area. There is no pay phones. There use to be 3 pay phones in this mile walk.

The two kids that go to school have been turned away from office phones for wanting to call home because after school activities were changed. We had a family member have an heart attack. We arranged for our kids the kids to go someone else home after school. We didn't know when we would be home. My son got it 3 days later. My daughter got it the next day. They got text right when they turned on their phones.

Both of their schools use to have pay phones, no longer.

We decided to pay for the phone instead of doing pay-as-you-go because we can shut it off if the phone is abused. We also can track when they make calls and who with. It is easier to block callers and text messages....but with our plan if we block picture text we also block standard text.

My kids have been asked by teachers to call/text us information. My son has a teacher that use this call home as a discipline method. Most parents get pissed at the kids if the teacher tells the student to call a parent and explain why they are in trouble. It happened to him one.....he spent the rest of the day sweating bullets.

I tell ya it was really tough growing up in the 80s and 90s and having to rely on common sense to get me by. What happens when they don't have time to call the rescue parents and they *gasp* have to make a decision on their own? Good luck with that.

Naaa....just public school educated. My weakness is also one reason I have put some money out on English grammar tutors for my kids. The oldest two both work above grade levels. My son, the oldest in honors English and will be taking AP courses next year.
Yes, they were home educated but I did not do it all myself.

I'm noticing a distinct lack of punctuation in those names, all of which are phonetically fairly obvious to pronounce and reasonably intuitive. At least some of them (Oprah and Gwyneth) are fairly normal names (Gwyneth is Welsh I believe). I think it's when people stretch names to breaking point in order to make them "unique" that people get all uppity about it.

And yes, obviously the transliterarion of some languages may require some punctuation (I think quite a few Vietnamese names require an inverted comma or hyphen in them in order to render them into the Western alphabet) but just whacking in a dash or something else to make your child's name unique is pathetic.

I don't think it's a racist thing to say - I know a few white people in the UK who have given their children very stupid names that will haunt them for the rest of their lives...mind you, none of them involve an inverted comma.

I also think it's a weird kind of arrogance - normal names aren't good enough for my child, so I'm going to make one up.

/this is, of course, the point where someone points out that Ty'Ge or whatever the hell it is is actually a very traditional and respected name in country X and where I have to eat humble pie.

My son's class has the following name groupings (based on my own judgemental views):

Normal 3
Slightly Unusual 4
Pretentious 6
WTF 4
Drugs 3

Inventive spellings are in WTF. Slightly unusual can be considered normal+. Pretentious includes pretty much every top baby name from the last 5 years. :\

I have no issue with the kid's name, but I do have an issue with chidlren having cell phones. Not to the point that they shouldn't ever have one until they're older, but that they should only have the most basic kind that limits who they can call (mom/dad/other family members) and has no texting function (sending or receiving). If your child needs a phone to keep in touch because plans have changed, etc., that's all their cell phone should be equipped to do. They don't need a data plan, they most certainly don't need an iphone or any other phones with all the bells and whistles.

Either go with a cell phone company like Firefly Mobile, which specializes in cell phones for children or a cheap prepaid phone like Tracfone.

Oh God I'm being trolled aren't I? Still, while the blood's up, eh?

No. No. 1,000x NO!

Beyoncé does NOT have HYPHEN over the "e" in her name, she has an acute accent over the final e, indicating how it is pronounced and a perfectly cromulent use of an accent (as per a shedload of the French language).

It's not about LIKING the names - there are thousands of names out there and it's down to personal choice. If you really can't abide any of them then maybe you make up something if you really have to (e.g. Wendy was invented by the author of Peter Pan IIRC), but banging a load of random punctuation to create a name that people can't understand and which has no other justification than "It's unique" is ridiculous.

/this is, of course, the point where someone points out that Ty'Ge or whatever the hell it is is actually a very traditional and respected name in country X and where I have to eat humble pie.

beyonce' has a hyphen over the e in her name.

in any case, black americans is a culture independent of africa so it doesnt have to be an african name to be "legitimate". they dont need approval.

i dont like the names aiden or ethan and neither do a lot of people. doesnt mean those children wil be less successful.

Story about Marijuana Pepsi Jackson (new window)

btw--my son's name is Xavier which is as common to some people as it is uncommon to others. Emeril Lagasse, poor guy, he'lll never get a break with such an ethnic name.

plenty of losers named Bob.

Forgot to say, Xavier is a cool name. Is it pronounced with a Z or an H? Regardless, it's a REAL name.

To avoid accusations of racism, I should point out that I also hate the following names and would probably (unfairly) presume that the bearers would be spoilt hippy idiot offspring of rich hippy idiots:

Buddy Bear Maurice
Petal Blossom Rainbow
Peaches Honeyblossom
Sage Moonblood
Zuma Nesta Rock
Kal-el Coppola
Fifi Trixibelle
Tiger Lily Heavenly Hirani

I'm sorry, but if you have an incomprehensible, unpronounceable name, one full of ridiculous inappropriate nouns or punctuation then it's one more hurdle for you to clear in life because people will be naturally prejudiced against you and you'll have to convince them that you're not as much of an idiot as your name implies.

Earlier poster was partly correct (albeit borderline racist) - when you go for a job the odds are there will be dozens of equally qualified people applying. If your name creates an instant negative impression then you're fighting an uphill battle.

I'm not saying it's right, it's just how people think.

I used to take box scores for local high school basketball when I worked at the paper...

Best name ever...

Psyche... pronounced Sasha... phonetically you can make it work but it was the dumbest thing I have ever seen.

My son's name is Ethan my daughter Torrie, unique-ish without being too crazy we think, although I am sure some would say otherwise.

Not only that, I'd be willing to bet there's a lot more losers named 'Bob' than 'Xavier'.

Nice names, but hardly unique.

I'm thinking Ethan Hawke and Ethan Hunt (character in MI) and Tory Spelling.

My daughter is named Luxury Yacht. It's pronounced Throat-Wobbler Mangrove. We call her Wobbler for short.

Pert: Noobian Noob: Pert: Noobian Noob: poor poor Uma, Kobe, Barack Husein Obama, Venus, Serena, Beyonce, Oprah, Condoleeza and Gwyneth. If only their parents had named them something more "american", but alas their unique names will keep them from ever becomiing successful.

I think they just identify with their orcish tribe.

/FOR THE HORDE!

... There are two Ethans in my son's class. No doubles of anything else. Take from that what you will.

And Tori used to be a nickname for Victoria... :\

Eh. I realized that made me sound like a huge dick. I'm just saying everyone's got a problem with someone's name. Ours? We picked out a very normal historical name because we both felt very strongly about it. Turns out because of Farking TeeVee it's also in the top 5 most popular names, so now I'm kind of defensive about it.
