Teenage girls in the United States and New Zealand show a particularly strong tendency to engage in sexual activity and to get pregnant if they grew up in families without a father present, a new long-term study finds.

Sexual activity. Good.

Pregnancy. Bad.

I guess if you're a single mom, you should Norplant your daughter as soon as she has her first period.

Maybe Jabber was dropped as a child.

GEAH, that I get.

2003-07-20 05:26:55 PM
I think "father" used here means biological only, whereas "daddies" means a dad or male role model who takes care of his offspring.

/sarcasm start
Should we be encouraging divorce more often??? :)
/sarcasm end

2003-07-20 05:28:59 PM
What's not to get? Anybody can be a father. You have to stick around and raise the kid to be a Daddy.

And GEAH is right, too.

2003-07-20 05:29:18 PM
Remember, a single mom is there to help her kids. Except when she's boning town. Then she wonders "WHY DOES GOD HATE ME?!" when she has another baby, or can't afford food.

"It's surprising to find such a specific relationship between absent fathers and girls' later sexual behavior," comments psychologist Sara R. Jaffee of the Institute of Psychiatry in London.

Imagine that. Decades of saying that fathers are unimportant, and little more than sperm donors, doesn't make it so. Guess we aren't a Brave New World after all. Social engineering is dead.

And where would one find these girls?

I live with Jabber and I can assure you that he was not dropped on his head as a child, however he does not always make sense so just smile and nod.....as for the article, I grew up in a family like that and I am by no means a product of my environment, besides they need to research a lot more people before making a broad generalization like that, I hardly see 762 girls being representative of the population as a whole

Oh yea.....More daddies, less fathers!!

Damn. I never got that hot single mom I worked with to introduce me to her hot teenage daughter. Kicking myself now.

2003-07-20 05:49:57 PM
Come off it...it's been scientifically proven that fathers are irrelevant. Their absence is made up for by a lack of drunken beatings administered to the mother and daughter. Why else is the mother automatically assumed to be the more fit parent in Family Court? Anyone heard of a mother being thrown in prison because she couldn't make her child support payments due to unemployment?

2003-07-20 05:55:26 PM
gromky
There's a flip side to that coin. Court's are generally more sympathetic to the mother (not always rightfully so).
As far as beatings go, I...yeah. I don't think that's seen as commonplace.

That's because our society still treats women like children. Our courts funnel all the money from the man to the woman because she is not expected to take care of herself. If women were expected to be adults and meet obligations, there'd be a lot more of them in jail for non-payment, and they wouldn't be getting custody all the time, either.

2003-07-20 06:11:50 PM
Okay Young_Fart That opens up a huge can of worms.
I don't have kids, thank God, but I can see it from both sides.
If the mother is supposed to own up to her role as sole provider, how is she to do that (get a f/t job) and still care for her chillins?
Do you know how much daycare costs?
At the same time, I can see the argument from the father's side. How would he be expected to do the same?
It takes to to make them, it takes two to raise them (together or apart)
But please don't turn this into a "It's a ploy to keep the man down" thread.

2003-07-20 06:15:48 PM
It takes a keyboard to raise a village. Or something.

I've seen this happen several times a week at the courthouse where I work (support hearings are always fun; you get to hear the most bullshiat excuses in the world).

And at least in Pennsylvania, you have to be brought into court several times for non-payment before you get jailed (and put on work-release).

Trust me. Family Court, Domestic Relations, and the Protection From Abuse court sees its share of scumbag women. It's not just men.

2003-07-20 06:20:21 PM
I think it also leads us to not like the idea of a committed, long-term relationship.

See? it's not my fault!

So imagine I'm a woman in a bad relationship with a young daughter. I can either stay miserable for another 16 years or I can take a 10 minutes, once, to explain to my daughter how to use a condom and that she should be on the pill if she wants to start having sex. Hard choice there, oh yeah.

It's absolutely idiotic to say that this would be 'better' with the father. What if the dad is a jackass? I know my childhood was much better with just my mom then it would have been with my mom and dad together, because my dad is a complete asshole. I mean I love him like a father, but he is just a complete asshole. I'm glad there wasn't such a social stigma attached with being a single mom in this country at the time.

And about wether or not it will be 'bad', how do you measure 'bad'? No one is going to grow up to be a perfect person anyway, so why even worry about it. As long as they get a collage degree and don't OD on drugs or whatever, you can consider their upbringing a success.

2003-07-20 06:22:28 PM
The simple fact is, both parents are quite important to raising a child. The courts aren't the only ones failing to see this.

Men who run out on kids = scumbags
Women who try to entrap men with kids = scumbags
Way too many parents of either gender = unfit scumbags.

My solution? Fewer kids. But, that won't come about for other particular ingrained social characteristics that I won't mention in order to avoid a flamewar.

However, I'll put it this way. If you want kids, stab yourself in your reproductive organs with an icepick.

I don't think anything of the sort, but still there's a double standard in our society. For boys, success is expected, and for girls it is encouraged. When's the last time you heard of a woman living at home with her parents called a loser?

2003-07-20 06:23:32 PM

No sh*t....why do people wonder why the world is going to hell in a handbasket? I rarely see criminals (especially particularly violent ones) from stable two parent homes.

The headline also should have included "Children who see their mother have sex may become primed for early self-blinding"

Maybe that's something a woman should consider BEFORE engaging in an activity with said jackass that could result in offspring. Don't you think?

This would be 'better' if women were more careful with their goodie-bag.

That's a great point.

Modern society has simply become too casual. We dress casual, we have casual sex, etc. I long for the days when men could wear a tie every day, for no particular reason, and not stand out from the crowd.

Sex is overrated. Now, hear me out, I am not knocking sex, but modern culture serves us sex on a silver platter and makes us believe it is of the utmost importance. Everything in this society is about sex, and thats horrible. If Einstein grew up in the 1980's, he wouldn't have dreamed up the theory of relativity, or developed (theories leading to) the atom bomb, he would have built vibrators and dildos.

We are quickly becoming a waste of a culture.

2003-07-20 06:46:09 PM
As the people in the dowtown druggie area are called, we need less "doners" and more daddies.

Elwood:
Yeah, but has anyone *heard* of it? Somehow, it never makes the news. I wonder why? Perhaps because it doesn't fit the mold of "men bad, women good" that is constantly rammed down our throats. Even this story which talks about a negative behavior firmly points its finger at (an absence of) men.

brianewart:
Great, so we should go back to the days of societal conformity, when people dress how they wanted, and sex was a forbidden topic? Let me guess, you probably also think it's shameful that there are black people in your neighborhood these days.

Yes. That is exactly what is wrong with society. Not enough ties. Back in the good old days a guy could go home from his trist with his mistress, have a beer, beat his wife, ignore his kid but dammit he looked good doing it. Jeebus man. This shiat has been going on all the time. It just hasn't been reported as much.

When I was single, the 3 nicest words a girl could say were "MY MOTHER'S BOYFRIEND". 95% of the time, that meant that the gates of paradise would be parting by the end of the night.

Of course, I ended up marrying a woman who was raised in a stable household by 2 decent people.

2003-07-20 07:03:04 PM
I guess if you're a single mom, you should Norplant your daughter as soon as she has her first period.

Or you might do as I have - decided it's not worth the termoil it puts your children through to date.

Their father took off years ago, never contacts them and refuses to pay child support.

I have tried having a happy social life myself and it always ends much worse for my kids then me. They really get torn up, and I've seen my son get angry when a man "disses" his mother or in his immature viewpoint does so.

I can't take it anymore, really. I want them to grow up having happy relationships, so I do what I can to point to examples elsewhere. I can live single. Fark it, batteries aren't that expensive. :/

/scared sh*tless because daughter has just "bloomed" :(:(:(

Well as I live in Florida, I very much appreciate not being expected to wear a suit and tie and waste my money on dry cleaning. It is WAY to hot here most of the year to wear a monkey suit.

Agree about sex being over rated, though.

It's interesting about men's clothing, though. When I was a kid, I remember when men stopped wearing hats with their suits (around 1972, in Ohio) That puzzled me. I noticed it mainly because my father was a clothier for most of my child hood through Jr. High.

In this area of the country, if you're in a position where you have to wear a tie, it signifies that you haven't risen to the level where you can dictate your own mode of dress.

I'm fine with that.

I also reside in Florida, and went to a funeral a few months ago....and, aside from the minister, and maybe 2 other men, was the only one there in a suit. It was really....odd.

*Loves wearing my suits*
