Uchiha_Cycliste: You may wonder where the Rick Roll originated from, and why people have fallen so much in love with it.

Just because it annoys some folks, you might think that it has no place on teh internets or that it's an indication that all hope has been lost.

Lost like the dreams you once held for the world when the internet was brand spanking new and oh so Full of hope.

The truth is that even here on Fark the classic Rick Roll serves a glorious purpose, to generate lolz, the real difficulty is getting people to click it unknowingly, it's really like all memes.

Game or not, memes are here for the lulz, now read the first word of every sentence.

I read your post in Morgan freemans voice. It was pretty great.

I would actually watch the Super Bowl this year if I knew with certainty that the halftime show (or better yet: the national anthem) would be rickrolled.

I knew the rickroll was coming, but I lol'd.
/would have been disappointed if it hadn't been a rickroll.

Happy Birthday Rick Astley. I think you have a nice vocal and I hope you get back in the studio soon. There are a crapload of 'musicians' on the radio with no singing ability and I can't take it.

2011-02-06 02:13:19 PM

pwn3d781: I didn't click right away, but it's not like you'd notice a huge difference between "Together Forever" and "Never Gonna Give You Up." They're almost practically the same song.

This. I didn't realize he was a two-hit wonder until recently.

/And I was paying attention to the radio back then, too.

damn I'm old!!!!

I suspect he's got a "Hollywood birthday", because he has to older than 45.

No, he's not--I can remember when NGGYU came out (1987) and everyone harped on the fact that he was only 21.

Are you sure they were harping on his age...cause it might have been the fact that he danced like a 50 year-old with a stick up his ass. Seriously, when I was 21, I would GET DOWN -- not stand there doing the geriatric shuffle.

So I yelled over to my husband (fellow farker) that it was "Rick Astley's birthday today!"

Our 6yr old son who's sitting on the couch asked us

"Should we go over to his house to celebrate?"

So now I've got this weird mental image of what an internet meme theme'd birthday party might look like if you were casual friends with Rick.

I mean, you ring the doorbell and instead of "ding dong!" you get the opening montage and Rick answers the door singing and dancing...

/it's both awful and hilarious at the same time...
//I just got pwnd by my own 6yr old.
///...again.

I can only assume that people who still think Rickrolling is funny have an IQ somewhere between that of a jar of mayonnaise and pig shiat.

Do you have a jar of mayonnaise and pig shiat at your house to compare it to?

The fact that you feel you needed to point that out is just silly. I mean, who cares? It was funny for five minutes and then people moved on. The only reason this thread is here is because it's Rick Astley's birthday and we're having a laugh at that.

I remember when the song came out and people would first see the video "He's white?". Only other singer I remember getting a similar reaction was Dan Hartman.

Ditto.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: Uchiha_Cycliste: Go back and read my above post explaining the rick roll too. It's chock full of Lolz.

I dunno. I think the Shea Stadium (new window) Rick Roll was pretty good...

'Cool story, sis' time: I knew a guy who was there, and he was explaining what happened at that game, not even knowing what a Rick Roll was or even the name of the song. I pieced together what happened and sent him the Wikipedia entry.

I was branded as the office nerd in a room full of engineers. Imagine that.

About two years ago, I pointed three of my coworkers to this video on Nancy Pelosi's YouTube channel. (new window) One of them didn't get it, and the other two were furious.

Ironically, the computer they watched it on didn't have any speakers.

Mr. Fuzzypaws: I'd like to know why the originator of the Rick Roll chose that song. Of all the songs on YouTube they chose "Never Gonna Give You Up". It could have been "Baby Got Back".

1. "Never Gonna Give You Up" was used in a Family Guy reference, and I'm sure that this meme is built partly as a reference to that.

2. "Baby Got Back" is too legitimately loved. Granted, both are cheesy, fun songs in their own way, but pre-gangsta rap songs pwn 80s club music any day of the week.

It being on family guy does not predate the meme. The episode that bit was in was "Meet the Quagmires", which originally aired on May 20, 2007. The "rickroll" originated a few weeks prior to that, when the trailer for GTA4 was released (which i cant find an exact date to), rockstars website went down in the flood and somebody posted a link to mirror of the trailer on 4chan. Which was actually a link to the video.

The family guy thing was either coincidental or very very timely considering the production time needed for animation.
