I can't blame Summit - somebody would've made those movies. I blame J. K. Rowling. Thanks to the success of Harry Potter, a series of books with mediocre writing but lots of manufactured tween appeal, anybody peddling a tween-compatible book series was going to get published just for competitive reasons. Stephanie Meyer hit a sweet spot, got her tripe published, and so a movie series was just inevitable.

I do, however, laugh at the idea that Summit is "in hardship" because they're missing a few million bucks from Blockbuster. The film has grossed almost $400 million worldwide at the box office, and grossed over $196 million in home media sales.

I fondly remember an OLD episode of America's Funniest Home Videos in which some video store employees played Domino Alley with thousands of video cassette cases.

I can only assume that this is happening at Blockbusters during working hours... maybe even a few high-spirited games of DVD Frisbee Golf, too.

This. And I'd also question why, if that amount would be a hardship, did they extend credit terms to a company that had just entered bankruptcy? Or does BB pay the distributor a royalty for each time the movie is rented?

I'm wondering if they have another dog in this fight, like shares of Netflix.....

Hopefully, whatever the outcome, Icahn will lose money.

Which side are we supposed to be rooting for here? If Blockbuster gets their way, they put a hardship and hopefully but doubtfully pressure on Twilight movie studio to go under. On the flip side, if Summit gets their way, then Blockbuster dies.

On the bright side, one way or another, we'll still win.

The twilight studio will not die. Get bought maybe, but I honestly can't see them doing THAT badly. On the other hand $3 a day late fee.... Blockbuster can DIAF. They thought they were too big to die and all this other stuff could NEVER replace them... I hate to see people lose their jobs and that is the only sad thing to me. Otherwise good riddance.

Damnit, I've been hitting up my local Blockbuster every week since "the event". I forgot how many old movies and workout videos they have. Why so many workout videos? Do people not know about softcore the internet? Blockbuster shockingly has become the cheapest way to get rentals again (in Canada). If you can't be arsed to leave your house you can even just pay 6$ to have it delivered. Which sounds outrageous, but at 64c a gig, a 40 gig blu-ray is suddenly much much cheaper from Blockbuster.

Wow-- Blockbuster can't even cough up a measly $6.8 million to cover DVD's it was shipped? How can they even keep the doors open with no cash flow?

I'd sure hate to be working there right now. Yeah, the "our company is farked, nobody cares anymore so let's just screw off until somebody comes to kick us out and lock the doors" experience is fun, but the bounced paycheck experience? Not so much. I've been there.

Yeah, they REALLY need to be in Chapter 7 already.

And what's the deal with the studio giving those guys credit? They should have shipped their DVDs only AFTER they got paid for them AND the check cleared.

If BB incurred this bad debt after filing for bankruptcy protection then, yeah, they need to be forced into liquidation. If it was found out the corporate officers were ordering millions of dollars in stuff they KNEW wasn't going to be paid for then maybe they should be indicted for fraud.

I love this. My indie video store is going great because I adapted to the market. I offer a monthly subscription fee membership with no late fees like Netflix AND for those that only rent a movie now and then my late fees are only a $1 like Redbox.

Once I took the aspects that I could copy from them (I can't offer streaming obviously) and applied them to a normal video store setting I gained back all the business the store had lost over the last few years and then some.

All BB has to do is offer a $2-$3 one night rental option with $1 for each extra day and a SIMPLE subscription option.

And stop buying a million copies of direct to DVD garaged. Going through the Hollywood Video close outs (I raided about half a dozen stores for inventory) it was obvious that they buy far too much junk inventory and not enough quality stuff.

Not that any of this matters, they're too far gone to be saved. But physical media isn't going away until the studios say so. And when they do (and yes, they will eventually go away), expect to see one hell of an increase in either your Direct TV bill or Netflix subscription cost.

6.8 million dollars is a lot of money - for a single person.

Now assume that you work for Summit and they pay you $50,000 a year (which is probably low for most people working there)

6.8 million pays 136 employees. IMDB lists over six hundred (600) people worked on Eclipse, including actors who were definitely paid more than $50,000.

This doesn't include things like rent for the offices or electricity or whatever movies Summit is looking to make in the future that they have to finance now.

Make Blockbuster pay and die. After years of screwing customers they're finally getting their just deserts.

This. My prediction is the Blockbuster brand survives as a video-game kiosk and delivery service brought to you by Papa John's (or possibly Carl's Junior). They can't stay afloat because businesses survive on credit and their stores became obsolete and therefore no longer assets. The only thing that could make me schadenfreude more than this (or the AOL failures of the past) would be a Best Buy collapse.
