i can't believe no one said BOXING HELENA. also, i'm not sure if it qualifies as "cult," but miller's crossing - i don't know how it didn't make money at the box office, but it's one of the best gangster movies ever. honourable mention - (and most disturbing movie i've ever seen): dead ringers. jeremy irons as twin gynecologists who do lots of bad things...

The article mentioned most of the good ones. I would add True Stories, and Until the End of the World.

Others were mentioned above, like Pi. But damn, if Strange Brew can be considered a cult movie, it's gotta be my favorite.

Dark City - freaking awesome sci-fi suspense type flick, complete with the utterly delicious Jennifer Connelly.

Night Breed - If you haven't seen this movie, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Near Dark - Best vampire movie out there. The saloon scene is one of my favorites of all time. Done by James Cameron's ex, and it has three of the actors from Aliens in it as vampires - Jenette Goldstein (Vasquez in Aliens), Lance Henriksen (Bishop) and Bill Paxton (Hudson).

Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

I've heard a lot of people say it's a great cult film and worth watching at least once. Never have found a copy of it at any video store though.

"A Brief History of Time:" A film about the work of cosmologist Stephen Hawking, who explains physics in a way that doesn't hurt your head.

I thought that said "cosmotologist"....exciting.

I don't know if it's considered a cult film, or if anyone other than me has actually seen it, but I really liked "The Big Hit". Has anyone else actually seen this movie? (Mark Whalberg, Lou Diamond Phillips, Christina Applegate)

"Be careful with that! It's a cult classic!" --Freakyjoe re: Pi DVD. Or maybe Yellow Submarine. Here are my picks:

* Four Rooms
* Smoke Signals (Good call, UncleFokker!). "Some days are good days to die, other days are good days to have breakfast". Frybread motif.
* Tanpopo. Egg passing motif.
* For The Cause. This is awsome. Watch this space for more info.
* The Family Game

'What's a fark-ass?'

Not just a source of some great satirical observations, but the movie was probably the most innovative and thought provoking I've seen in years.

2003-07-19 11:15:17 PM
THEY LIVE. flat out great. well, except for the mind-numbing plot-stopping alley fight between Roddy Piper and Keith David. Zzzzzz....

And I want to second "American Movie"
and officially put it up for voting.

It is not 'unintentionally funny,'
the two guys in it are unintentionally funny,
as is every single thing they do.
The movie is supposed to be funny. It is.
See it.

2003-07-19 11:21:42 PM
I'll throw my hat in the ring with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I don't believe anyone has mentioned it yet. With Tim Roth. Very funny.

If you don't know who Rosie and Guildy are and why are they dead, go read Hamlet.

2003-07-19 11:22:41 PM
Was going to say Donnie Darko, but someone already did. So I voted.

You Kids don't know from REALLY bad Cult Movies
The Return of Captian Invincible

Check this one....Alan Arkin and Christopher Lee in a MUSICAL about an Alcholic ex-superhero chased out of America during the McCarthy era for wearing a Red cape......and Richard "Rocky Horror" O'Brien wrote most of the Songs

2003-07-19 11:31:32 PM
Heavenly Creatures (don't know if this counts, since it received an Academy Award nomination for best script, but it was a foreign (New Zeland) arthouse film, and the film that first gained Peter Jackson a reputation beyond the weirdo/cult film/gprefest crowd (i.e., me and my friends))
