Been there a few times. even before Katrina, it was pretty "effluent".

My brother in law and his wife, they like to go there. But complain after Katrina, there are too many Hispanics moving in, assuming the influx of people to help rebuild, and provide other services needed.
they were complaining about the tiendas, and number of newly opened Mexican restaurants, saying it spoils the culture there. What?

They live in San Antonio, over 2/3 Hispanic, and my sister in law is Hispanic.

They act like they've never had andouille enchiladas. Jeez.

the more race and gender is brought up the more and more it becomes the focus.

what should matter is if this or that individual applying for a job at your workplace is smart and tenacious enough to handle the job.

noticing trends like blacks or women typically arent computer geeks doesnt really accomplish anything, nor is it relevant.

That means more white collar crime ( i.e. the guys that steal millions instead of hundreds )

whammer: Truthfully, there should be a cultural reserve district in a place like New Orleans. A district designed to preserve and propagate what is uniquely best in the area.

As an example, Tin Pan Alley was the New York City musical enclave around the turn of the 20th Century. A place where composers and musicians could meet and rub elbows. Just by proximity alone, it became a huge font of the music of the time.

New Orleans had a low rent district like that, where musicians assembled. But they could also have other themed districts for cooking and other such arts.

They do. They just built an entirely new neighborhood called "Musicians Village (new window)"

On the positive side, I don't think those guys have much bad history with the Congoids, so maybe it will all work out.

I tell people that "White" isn't correct, just as "Black" isn't correct. And I get laughed at. I could write out the 34 known groups of people endemic to Europe and Africa (Surprise! There's actually, by genetic differentiation, FIVE different races, not two in those areas!)

But I'll be shut down by assholes who hold GEDs. And not the high scoring "School sucks and I already know this shiat" people. The "First 3 minutes of Idiocracy" people.

Shaggy_C: This is happening all over the country. After decades of "white flight", we're now seeing urban renewal. Property tax goes up and prices out the lower income brackets. I think the big change has been caused by the drunk driving campaigns of the last 30 years. College kids don't want to move to the suburbs, they want to keep up the party lifestyle. Best place to do that outside of a college town is right near the main strip in a city.

I find the urban renewal to be completely true, and that smart new graduates want nothing to do with suburbs. But the link to drunk driving campaigns gets a [not_sure_if_serious.jpg]

It would be an interesting study, to be sure. But I can pretty much assure you that the vast majority of people in my neighborhood are here because of the nearby party nightlife. If you could drive without fear, why would you want to live in a tiny, expensive apartment if you could have a huge house in the burbs?

I would say Prince George's County, MD, but they apparently have the highest crime rate in the Washington Metro area.

Also, the state police invaded the home of a mayor on suspected drugs possession and shot his 2 dogs.

I only lived there for five months before my job and house were destroyed by Katrina. I loved the region and think the people are wonderful.

I think that it will grow to be a much stronger and vibrant economy and will always be one of the most wonderful cultural experiences one can have in this country.

Because the 'burbs blow. Everything closes early, there are lawns to mow, gutters to clean, cars to own and maintain, and most people out there are parents and have no lives outside of work and family. It's not worth it just for a couple extra thousand square feet to heat and vacuum. And what are you gonna do with that extra room anyway? Drive to the store for crap to fill it up? Shiat out a few kids to fill the extra bedrooms? Pointless. Add in the extra time and effort for commuting to work and it's like you spend your whole life doing crap because you have to because you chose that big house, rather than because you want to.

I know it's black history month, but isn't Fark a little anti-white folks the last couple of days?

Don't get me wrong. I'm usually the first person to be like "FARK is so effing racist", especially when it comes to black people. But being pro-black doesn't mean being anti-white or being hateful to white people.

I should be enjoying a post that is sticking it to the man, but honestly, I find it as uncomfortable as I would if it was making fun of my people.

Yeah, but in my near-downtown neighborhood I think the resident philosophy is more like "why spend more time in traffic everyday so you can spend more time on the weekends mowing your lawn?" We actually enjoy city life in other ways more, like hopping the Metro two stops to see a band at the park or try some new restaurants... stuff that suburban life just doesn't allow for without advance planning.

So maybe in the past 30 years there's less overall excitement about moving away from the city to have family + dog + picket fence, etc. in US culture too? Not having to watch what time I have my last drink before I head home is kind of a secondary thing.
