-5C? What's that in Freedom Degrees™?

No, you get up that high, and you're still functioning, that's something to be proud of. I'd buy you a drink if I was with you at the time, but I'd be afraid it would kill you.

Poland's legal limit is about 0.02% so I would say he had a BAC around 0.6%.

The alcohol didn't do anything to help him survive. Consuming alcohol decreases core body temperature. You feel warmer because blood is rushing to your skin, but your body is actually losing heat faster.

He was certainly hypothermic, but the alcohol likely helped him survive by preventing the massive amounts of frostbite he would have suffered had he been sober.

while this is correct and I agree, this is how you always hear it reported in the news.

not sure if its for a public shock factor, or just the continued bad news reporting we receive now days.

No. 0.6 is already in percentage, so it's 0.6%.

That liter to gram conversion only works with water as pure water is 1mL = 1g. Alcohol is a different density than water, so the simple conversion would result in a false answer.

yeah, it's bullshiat, and probably just bad reporting. "Legal limit" doesn't mean anything if you're not driving.

"SideOfBacon had a family reunion at his house and went to bed with three times the legal limit!" OMG he should be in prison....

I believe it's mililiters of blood per micrograms of alcohol. The units they use for BAC is not a percentage because it compares weight to volume.

ms_lara_croft: So this is proof that booze and anti-freeze are the same thing?

Yeah, for the most part.

There's a gene called ADH4, it's EXTREMELY prevalent in Celts and Scandinavians, and what does it manage? Drinking large amounts of alcohol. Without liver damage or brain damage.

/Amusingly, it's also found in conjunction with a gene that's also rather endemic to those peoples: bipolar/depression.

highrye: 1.024 micrograms per 100ml is 1 percent. Which is crazy.

The only thing I can think of is that he went into the Mammalian Diving Reflex and the alcohol kept his blood from freezing. But, yeah, 1%, holy fark, miraculous isn't even a feasible answer. This is CMoH territory, NO ONE should survive that.

If your core is anywhere near approaching the freezing point such that alcohol would play any factor in your blood's fluidity... you're already dead as fark.

yeah.. I know. I write a note to the local papers every time they are moronic enough to do it.

It never really pissed me off until a local moron walked into the river and drowned whilst partying and cheap drinks were to blame for his THREE TIMES THE LEGAL LIMIT bac. So then our all knowing government decided that legislating the minimum drink price would solve the issue.

Ignoring the fact that
a) the asshole was predrinking
b) three times the legal limit aint shiat
c) THERE IS NO LEGAL LIMIT FOR WALKING

sorry, pissed off that it costs me over $2 to drink in the bar when it don't need to.
