Because in America we don't mind funneling scarce public resources to people who will make millions of dollars a year.

Priorities? LOL WUT?

Seriously we need to decouple sports from schools and let the newly-formed sports clubs and fans fund the hype and leave public money to funding the development of students who should be contributing to the economy the rest of us use.

No wonder we're IMPORTING engineering students.

While I agree in some ways that major college athletics needs some serious reform...........this idea that public money is funding major college athletics is absurd. These programs are fully funded via donations, merchandising, ticket revenue and TV revenue. At the end of the day, many of them donate signifigant money back to their host school.

Or you could actually pay taxes and then the schools would be able to fund such things, since much of the athletic department budget comes from private donations and, for smaller schools, payouts for going to big schools. (For larger schools, it's merchandising and ticket/box sales).

But I'm sure you know how universities work, right, since you didn't even understand that in actuality, a focus on research is also damaging the ability to teach students as well. Yet for some reason, you don't want them to stop research, now do you?

Good. This should be the standard across the board. There is no reason these kids should be wasting time snoring through a class so they can be given an A based on their football skills, while somebody who actually wants to attend college gets rejected.

Throughout grad school whenever I ran a class, I'd have 2-5 kids show up three weeks after classes started with a piece of paper that basically said "I am an athlete, so I can skip whenever I want, not do any assignments, and still get at least a B, or else the athletic department will go to war with you".

My point is- just like poor people tend to play the slots more than someone with a working knowledge of statistics, poor and primarily African-American families try to play the sports lottery in which, though they were handed a slight advantage genetically due to slavery (not a justification for, just saying...), are still at a statistical disadvantage to gaining entrance into the NFL, NBA or MLB due to the small personnel demand.... College football players tend to graduate at a higher rate than average students. Just FYI.

1.8 GPA and 850 on the SAT gets you into prep school at best. Probably Junior College. If you're going to rail against the system then you might as well rail against facts rather than supposition.

"Funneling scarce public resources" ... what? College football is a money-maker. The teams only have 85 players. At a school of 10,000+ that's hardly even a blip on the radar. How are they a drain when they pay for themselves and every other organized sport in college?

As for the economy "the rest of us use" ... um, it's the same economy. You do realize that everyone is making a profit, and idiot new-money millionaires spend all of their money, right? To say that they don't contribute to the economy when they're paying for everything for themselves, their families and their hanger-on's is ludicrous.

Sure, Idiocracy was prophecy, but more likely Jersey Shore, My Super Sweet 16, and 16 & Pregnant are going to get us there faster. Dumb kids have been playing college football for years. I just watch them beat the shiat out of each other on Saturday. I don't have to listen to them talk.

Yep, institutionalized discrimination. Yep, without a doubt. Look, people are people, dumbass, but in terms of institutional discrimination? Where? Where does it say a black person can't do what a white person can do? A NATION doesn't do crap, but people do. And that is sad that people haven't evolved.

If the University and the students honestly isn't hurt by having these teams huge money making ventures on campus, then it is fine. However it is apparent that it is damaging or diverting from the University, in terms of opportunity cost.

Take the University of Oregon for instance. Phil Knight, who previously expanded the library - about 20 Million, and rebuilt the Law School (20 Million) and the Business School (15 Million) just got through spending 500 Million on the establishment of an Athletic Student Center (515 athletes use only) expanding the football stadium and building a new basketball stadium, and renovating the track/field facilities.

While his business is sports, he spent 10 times over 3 years on sports what he previously spent over 10 years for the academic side. Not only that but the actual undergraduates have seen no improvement to the other 50 buildings, have no parking places on campus and their tuition has gone up 600% over the past 12 years.

For comparison the 10 coaching staff for the football team and travel expenses for the 6 away games out of state are the equivalent salaries to 60 tenured professors at the University.

Anyways here is an actual efficiency report regarding university investment in sports.
http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/DI_MC_BOD/DI_BOD/2009/April/04,%20_Empirical_Effects.pd f

The summation is that the schools aren't benefitting significantly in terms of ROI, the students/athletes aren't benefitting significantly, and the impact on the biggest football schools is huge in terms of additional negative externalities.

As a Miami Hurricanes fan, I am quite content with what Coach Golden has done in less than 2 months. Only 2 out of 10 players that were committed under Coach Shannon stayed, and by the end of the today we may get around 17-19 players. I'd say I'm pretty excited about how Coach Golden and his staff will do with a full year to recruit.

Lane Kiffin is one of the biggest dirtbags on the planet second only to that fat sack of fecal matter he tows around with him that has gained self-awareness and calls itself "Ed Orgeron." Tennessee is better off without those two. Frankly, I can't believe USC thumbed its nose at the NCAA and brought back the two people who were in large part responsible for recruiting during the Bush and McKnight scandals, but it's not like the NCAA was going to do anything that harsh. Charles Barkley must have been on to something when he wondered out loud who it is that Lane Kiffin has pictures of having sex with a monkey to get a string of top coaching jobs he's never done anything to deserve.
