You know what's fun about this?

1.) Bing results suck
2.) Bing copies Google.

Actually did today. Curious if they had a Silverlight solution. Nope.

Look for another message from Microsoft that says that Google is just copying what Microsoft will have in Microsoft's next release.

//They actually said that about a vaporware product once.

Copying features and techniques in tech is expected, and honestly it's good for the market as a whole. If they recreated Google's search algorithm, nobody would really care. But just pulling Google's search results is just lame.

FoxNews comparative fail.

The sample they used for their images (torsoraphy) exists on the Wikipedia side of things as a redirect to the 'Tarsorrhaphy' article

The non-Fox article I saw with some made up word showing RIM as the first result in each was more compelling.

Jesuschrist...

Microsoft isn't "copying Google" more like looking at "what was going on on the users web browising experience" and try to map out the web from that.

We only know about Google, because Google was the only one who tried dicking around and perform this "test", which only proves that Microsoft is indeed taking the users input as a way to map the web and provide better results.

Plus it's not as if Google doesn't do dozens of things that fall on the "copying" side of things.

Yes, because the many, many user searches for "mbzrxpgiys" need to be improved by getting Bing to return the exact results that Google does.

That's not indexing the web. That's just providing a mirror of Google. And hell if they got that data by watching what customers were doing - or if they did due diligence in informing customers exactly how much of their data they were mining and broadcasting to Redmond.

Microsoft toolbar tracks user *choices* when they perform search using any search engine. Incorporate those results into Bing. That applies independent of the search engine used.

It isn't that Bing is directly querying Google and presenting Google's direct results on the Bing home page.

There are certainly reasonable concerns in having a toolbar track where you are clicking - but it is spelled out in the stuff you click through when you install the toolbar. Google toolbar does the same tracking thing and has a similar notification when you install it.

Listen you dumb assholes. Go to the bottom of the google image search page. Click on "switch to basic version". Ask your nurse to clean the shiat off of your dumb mouth.

This would be a big 'who cares' for me, if it weren't for those smug Bing commercials that basically try to paint Google as an overloaded mess where you can never find what you're searching for. I guess they're trying to show how shiatty their own search engine is? fark you, Bing.

2011-02-02 12:40:04 AM
So BING and Google have basically the same content in terms of search. Big deal, I thought the major difference BING is trying to play on is in how the searches are presented?

For those crying about how GIS is presented you can thank BING for forcing Google to make that change, same thing with the background picture on the google home page.

They are just stealing eachothers ideas and improving on them where they can and the process just repeats itself.

Except I have to do it every single time I search, and at no point have I ever been using the new style and thought "thank god, this is SO much more useful."
