2011-01-24 04:53:39 PM
That money recovers misused government funds to pay hard working American taxpayers. Why does the liberal socialist left hate America?

Frikkin redistribution of wealth! Those hardworking Americans earned that money and now Comm-bama is taking it away and giving it back to the proletariat!

Awesome. This conservative cheers this progress. Now, we just need a way to figure out how to keep that other $57.5 to $87.5 Billion from being wasted.

You want to cut Medicare? THIS is the way to do it.

Oh, goody, Yahoo!News comments.

just a tip of the iceberg and remember, most fraud occurs in the inner cities - just another way for payback for Democrats loyal following and their purchased votes

*

If your doctor is Muslim, better find a new one because he will be forced to close his doors once his Medicare fraud is discovered. All that money he defrauded the Government goes to fund Hamas and Hezbollah. Also, watch out for the medical Jihad they practice on Jews, the infidel Westerner will be next.

*

This is fraud from just 1 year in just Medicare. Can you imagine the billions and billions in wasted and stolen money if Obamacare gets enacted. It's mind boggling.

Do not - I repeat, DO NOT - read Yahoo News comments. They will literally damage your brain.
Most of the people who post on there now were normal people before they started reading them.

animesucks: physical therapy clinics probably steal more from medicare than anyone else

More from everyone, really. Had a coworker "injure" his hand with a cable crimper, and while the injury may have been real, the 8 months of physical therapy were a touch...extravagant? It was also extremely irritating to have to carry everything that weighed more than 20 pounds for him, while listening to him talk about how much wood he chopped over the weekend.

2011-01-24 05:49:43 PM
no, it's a good step, and one that must be taken, but even if you immediately and magically removed all fraud from the system, it would still not fix the financial problems.

To do that, you have to attack the source of the problem, which is an entirely US-centric problem: Doctors are paid more to run more test and do more procedures and prescribe more pharmaceuticals. They are not paid more to have healthier, more educated (in a personal health sense) patients.

Until that is fixed, our healthcare system will never, NEVER get where it needs to be. Health care isn't a car or a watch or a loan or a gallon of gas...in many ways, it is the opposite of a market-driven product, because it is ultimately suicidal (pun!) if left to capitalism.

It is like a housing bubble that can't bust until it brings down the entire country. You thought the real estate speculation was an insane mess? Look at the annual increase in the cost of healthcare over the last 20 years, then look at the cost of home ownership over the same period.

Extend that trend out 10 or 20 or 40 years into the future (presumably most farkers are planning on being around another 40+ years), and let that settle in for you.

If you think the "what will it cost me" number looks too high to be plausible, welcome to the collapse of America. All this bull-shiatting, pandering and positioning in congress, trying to delay and repeal and pass the buck, for 20 years now we've been ignoring the elephant in the room, and the time is fast approaching when we won't have that luxury any longer.

We've lived in this isolated bubble of prosperity in the US for so long that almost nobody alive today can really understand what it's like when a country literally falls apart under its own weight. The great depression was the closest thing we've seen since the civil war, and even that was nothing compared to what's staring us in the face. America as we know it might not even be around long enough to have to worry about global warming...

New authority granted by Obamacare law allows Feds to recover $2.5 billion from Medicare scams. What's left out from that is that the cost of the new authority, the Medicare Evasion Scam System, is approximately $2.5 billion.

Yes, those $75 monthly appointments are murder.

Compare to the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars it might cost medicare to keep grandma alive in the hospital for three extra days after her liver fails.

/death panels ftw?

Yep, end of life care is some of the most expensive medical care you can receive. We as a society need to do a better job at accepting the inevitable instead of wasting billions trying to make it last a few more days.

$2.5 Billion out of $60 - $90 billion I give them a D-.

2011-01-24 06:04:52 PM
If it was actual fraud then the government already had that authority. If it is not out right fraud then maybe it was an example of a poorly written law to begin with. So it is being stopped by another poorly written law? That does not make me feel any better. It makes me wonder what other unintended consequences we will be facing in the future.

FTFA - Experts say the solution to solving the nation's estimated $60 billion to $90 billion a year Medicare fraud problem lies in keeping fraudulent providers out of the system in the first place.

I wonder how they came up with that number? Is there something real to base it on, did they pull it out of their dupas or is the answer a bit of both?

2011-01-24 06:19:43 PM
If the Republicans repeal Obamacare, does that mean we have to give that money back?

2011-01-24 06:24:25 PM
The Affordable Care Act will also allow authorities more power to combat fraud, including tougher screenings for providers and the ability to withhold payments during investigations.

While I support this in theory, the "ability to withhold payments" part of it is going to exacerbate the payment issues that result in a number of physicians flat-out refusing medicaid or medicare.

No downside to tougher screenings for providers, though, I'm with 'em on that 100%.

Rubberband Girl: I wonder how they came up with that number? Is there something real to base it on, did they pull it out of their dupas or is the answer a bit of both

Given that it's an "estimation" it's probably a little from column a and a little from column b.

benpatient: To do that, you have to attack the source of the problem, which is an entirely US-centric problem

Completely and utterly wrong.

Eastern European and Russian organized crime is heavily involved in Medicare/Medicaid fraud. Nigerian scammers are in on it too. Even the plain old La Cosa Nostra has fingers in the pie.

karmaceutical: ... and the economy of Florida is destroyed.

More THIS than you know.

Which is why I never could take a guy like Alan Grayson seriously when he started in biatching and moaning about defense fraud - maybe he's right about that, but there he is smack dab in the middle of Medicare-fraud central, the guy with the biggest mouth in the House...curiously silent.

If you hear somebody complain about defense fraud and NOT Medicare fraud, or vice versa, that's a good sign they are fundamentally not serious about government oversight.

HeadLever: Awesome. This conservative cheers this progress. Now, we just need a way to figure out how to keep that other $57.5 to $87.5 Billion from being wasted.

I wish, but it's not. This is Washington once again plugging one hole while letting ten others open up.

Because people have put a huge dollar value on their lives and their health, it's all but inescapable that health care will be either a business decision, a political decision, or some unholy combination of both.

The only way I can see to kill off the fraud while preserving Medicare is to put the decision into the individual's hands...but that means vouchers, and Palin's for vouchers, and therefore the idea is DOA even though I doubt she even understands the concept and has stumbled across a halfway decent idea in much the way that a blind hog finds an acorn.

I admit, I came in here initially to drop a "All your politics are now irrelevant." But it's really unnecessary, here. There's already so much snark flying around that my little addition wouldn't make a noticeable difference. So, yeah.

3% - 5% is only a D-. That's a pretty solid F where I come from.
