That last sentence reads better backwards:

Fly into OAK all the time, and stay by the airport. Never felt in danger. Now, when I visit my client (Alameda County Medical Center), I never go there at night.

If I'm going to be in a plane having to make an emergency landing somewhere around California, I would hope the pilot would have the goddamn common courtesy to land the plane right ontop of a mountain in the Sierra Nevadas, so we can pop the emergency slide and tumble all the way f*ck down into Lake Tahoe. At least then I would have a story to share with The Most Interesting Man in the World.

And then The Most Interesting Man in the World will tell you how he was the pilot on that flight and avoided hitting an orphanage with the plane and delivered two babies after the crash.
All with a broken arm and femur.

When I used to live in SF, OAK was a decent alternative secondary airport to SFO, albeit a bit further to get to. Small - so quick to get to your flight and gate and on return to your parked car. And cheaper to use than SFO. Used to go to downtown Oakland to visit a company once a week. No big deal. Never saw anything.

Even native Sfers would say dumb things about Oakland. Parts around the lake are decent. The area by the hills is also nice. Fact is the violence is confined to very small pockets in the city. And yes, keep out of those areas - but why would you go there?

2011-01-23 12:16:07 AM
Were they all in jeopardy?

Oh, the one funny thing about OAK when I used to fly out of there ('01 - '04), they had a Nation of Islam food stand by the gates with black muslim salesman in bowtie. Just in case you had a hankering for bean pie. And you like supporting Farrakhan. I don't - on either point.

To buy drugs?

Or was that a trick question?

I'm guessing that since you wanted to "dig" on Detroit, that you were not part of the local movement for the "Big Dig" that is still horrendously screwed up in Boston? Right?

That was Your Black Muslim Bakery. They were inspired by the Nation of Islam, but not affiliated with them. They pretty much faded out of existence a few years ago when they killed journalist Chauncey Bailey, who was in the process of writing a less than flattering story on the Bakery and Yusuf Bey IV, the son of founder Yusuf Bey.

Out of curiosity, I once bought something from their booth at the Coliseum. I wasn't impressed.

Your Black Muslim Bakery perhaps? Yeah, the founder is now in jail for murdering someone. Way to follow the rules of Islam, asshat.

-The "At least we're not Detroit!" comes from This tourism video. And you don't know what you're talking about, because now the Big Dig is fine. Still "horrendously" screwed up? Okayyyyy..

And Detroit is farked up no matter who's looking at the town. Your town, I'm assuming. My apologies to you, Mr Overly Sensitive.

That's okay my friend (and yes I think I would count you as such), I just wanted you to be reminded we all have our regional faults.

And other then the big "booms" from people dynamiting the rocky firmament early in the morning, I slept well in the few times I slept locally in your hotels while visiting EMC.

No hard feelings... :-) Just getting my own "dig" in. :-)

The whole place should be walled up like Escape From New York. I lived there for 3 years. Heard gunshots almost every night without exception...everything from rapid-fire machine gun volleys to huge shotgun cannon blasts. I won't even glance in the direction of that murder hole again.

It's a big metal vehicle that flies in the air, but that's not important now.

Um. seriously. Not saying you're lying, but maybe you're exaggerating just a bit? I live in Oakland, been here a long time, raising my kids here, and if I felt it were as unsafe as you describe I'd be long gone. I love my neighbors, it's got great weather, a surprisingly good public school that my kids go to. And good museums, the zoo, lots of hiking and bicycling.

Sure it has problems but sheesh.
