vegasj: What has killed me for years is how can they NOT be sued for false advertising (Taco Bell or any fastfood place, they all do it)...

What they show you and what they actually server you never, ever looks the same.

Left - look at all that meat (stuff)...
Right - empty farking shell.

I used to work there-- in the mid-80s it was damn near 100% beef-- we got in bags of raw beef to cook on the stove, added powdery seasoning and wallah; Tao Bell beef. Now it all comes precooked in a bag you boil and squeeze out like toothpaste.

I believe the lawsuit's claim is that it's hard to be an educated adult when companies lie about what it is they're selling.

ErinPac: I doubt there could be enough water to be the second ingredient and still make the beef come out at 36%

Not necessarily... Oatmeal is made with twice as much water as oats and it isn't a liquid.

Taco Bell is awful. I don't even care what it's made of, it's crap. I'm kind of offended that they even call those things tacos. Tacos look like this:

www.mexicanfoodrecipe.org

If you've never had tacos that look like that, then you don't really know what Mexican food is like. Taco Bell most certainly isn't it; it isn't even a slight facsimile.

Do yourself a favor and get a plate full of these. They cost maybe a dollar at a taco truck.

I've recently switched to mostly organic foods. I love fast food, it tastes great, but it's really faux food.

If environmental bacteria can't grow on it, what chance do our gut bacteria have of digesting it? I think modern, highly preserved foods are one cause of the modern obesity epidemic. They deliver fat and mouthfeel, but precious few nutrients. Body stays hungry, wants more food, but actually remains nutrient starved. Hence, lack of satiation.

//But loves me a good domesticated burrito. I like crunchy stuff also, but for Mexicali type food? I prefer the velvet like textures. Lots of heat, a smooth portion of something like sour cream to balance, but the important thing is good, fresh ingredients. (can you tell I like to cook?).

Taco Bell:

Our taco meat is made from USDA-inspected beef and is subjected to quality check points. It tastes great because it's simmered in 12 authentic seasonings and spices and is never frozen. Moreover, our taco meat is leaner than what you'll find in a restaurant-cooked hamburger because of the unique way that we prepare our taco meat and remove fat.

It is 100% beef.

This. My dad works for one of the companies that make their hamburgers, and I worked in the factory a few summers. It's 100% beef. People who spout crap about fillers and stuff like that piss me off. I guess it's their way of feeling superior over people who eat there.

Not trying to change the subject, but the lame arguments about 5 Guys burgers in the east, and the west equivalent of In-N-Outs, out west still have me perplexed.

How do either of you consider them hamburgers when all the life is cooked out of them, and it's hard to tell they are beef, or some other form of filler (like Taco Bell's "stuff").

2011-01-23 01:06:38 AM
That's higher than it was. 10 years ago a friend who worked there showed me a box for it that listed the ingredients as only 11% meat. The rest was mostly oats (as filler) though. The more meat in it, the less healthy it probably is.

You're eating fast food. What do you think?

Actually, I've heard McDonald's beef is 100% meat from a cow's body. I know, for instance, it's not more than 3% lip and ear meat...and did you know that the lip and ear together constitute about 3% of a cow's body? Yes.

Reads article: Comes back- the USDA defines beef as 40% beef. The mixture has 36% beef. Or should I say that particular package on that particular day had 36% beef. So maybe it was a glitch. SERIOUSLY. This is really dumb.

The document lists water, "Isolated Oat Product," wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent, autolyzed yeast extract, modified corn starch and sodium phosphate as well as beef and seasonings.

The USDA defines "beef" as "flesh of cattle."

Those advertising claims don't apply to Korea. And no, if you're eating beef in Korea, it's not as fresh as it would be in Texas or California. That's OK. Camp Casey has a great Popeye's, and chicken in Korea is usually excellent. I used to travel 3 hours just to get to TDC because that was as close as I could get to that kind of luxury. That Baskin Robbins will hook you up with a nice Granita, though you might prefer a frozen Kettle in the 'ville.

Thanks for your service.
