I dunno. I've known people to develop godlike powers of destruction if they don't have coffee. So I would say coffee is good for the people around you rather than just you.

Caffeine use can trigger migraines.

Taking caffeine can also stop a migraine.

TFA reminds me of this

Owner: Take this object, but beware it carries a terrible curse!
Homer: [worried] Ooooh, that's bad.
Owner: But it comes with a free Frogurt!
Homer: [relieved] That's good.
Owner: The Frogurt is also cursed.
Homer: [worried] That's bad.
Owner: But you get your choice of topping!
Homer: [relieved] That's good.
Owner: The toppings contains Potassium Benzoate.
Homer: [stares]
Owner: That's bad.

I'm going to say: It all depends on how early you have to get up, and how steady your hands have to be when you get there.

THIS. Although I quit smoking 3 days ago, after... 15 years... I did quit for 1 year previously, starting the night the Yanks beat teh Phils in the WS (2009)

Other people drive me to drugs.

Otherwise I'd just smoke pot all day.

Same as everything in life, it's probably bad if it's abused.

I recently cut WAY back on my caffeine intake. I had horrible headaches for a few days, and trouble sleeping a night or two, followed by intense sleepiness ... but then my body readjusted.

I'm down to two cups in the morning. I was the equivalent of a "pack a day" caffeine drinker. It wasn't that difficult past the first few days. Smoking and over-eating were much harder addictions to break.

Every year during my physical, near the end of the diet questions, my doc asks about my caffeine intake. Then he always says "y'know... we keep trying to prove it's bad for you", with a twinkle in his eye that borders on a wink-wink nudge-nudge.

CUP wakes up with a migraine. CUP can go take imitrex, zomig, caffergot or maxalt. All of them are expensive and have potentially severe cardiovascular side effects. Or, CUP can make a HUGE triple espresso and take two aspirin and have the minor known (and sometimes salutary) side effects, like minor jitters and a very satisfying morning dump and be on her way to work with no headache.

Coffee good.

Caffeine (in moderate to large amounts - I can tolerate small amounts okay) makes me sick. I get really, really nauseous, and I had GI problems for years. I mentioned it in passing to my mother, and she said that my father had the same problem, and caffeine was the culprit. I had been drinking ungodly amounts of Diet Pepsi, and had been for a long time.

Switched to caffeine-free Diet Pepsi (get rid of all together? Not even on the radar, dear friends), and my nausea went away almost overnight.

I still get nausea from other conditions, and my damn Fioricet contains caffeine, but caffeine has proven to be terrible for me. I always need energy, and I'm jealous of people who don't have problems with it.

TheLopper: First the told us eggs were bad. Then they were good. Then they were bad. Then good. Then bad. Then good...

Here's my rule of thumb:
If you rely on the media and/or medical establishment to tell you what foods are bad for you, you are probably eating badly and always will.
Our ancestors did just fine and they ate eggs, bacon, lard, whole milk and all kinds of other "bad-for-you" stuff.

2011-01-20 10:08:35 PM
Caffeine fixes my headaches, which are usually caused from not having caffeine. Trying to ween myself off slowly by just having a couple glasses of iced green tea a day, maybe by spring my caffeine addiction will be gone. Stuff should have a warning label, got a migraine so bad last week from going about 30 hours without caffeine I threw up.

The eggs, bacon, whole milk, and so on were also very different back then. They didn't have all of these scientific stimulants/hormones/pesticides/etc... it's not as simple as you make it out to be. Relying on media is probably not necessary but completely ignoring science doesn't feel right either.

I guess if it's bad for me, I'll be leaving behind one very productive corpse.

My point is that most of this "science" is common sense.
If you drink some coffee or tea at some point in your day, that's fine.
If you're slamming Red Bulls and Mountain Dew all day, that's not fine.
If you need someone else to tell you that, you're beyond hope.

This kinda reminds me of those Drug commercials on TV. Levitra, Uloric ect. some side effects may include heart attacks and DEATH. At least the side effects of caffeine are much more mild.

/I have gone off of caffeine and gotten headaches, but a few naproxen and some caffeine and I am good as new in about 30 minutes.
//Use to drink a liter of JOLT in the morning when I had early college classes, one of which was Drugs and Society.

My two cents: they've been trying to figure out if caffeine is bad for you since humans started caring about that crap, and in all those years, with all those people working on it, there is still no definitive proof that it's actually bad for you. Just a bunch of studies with no real solid conclusions. Therefor, it's obviously not harmful enough for us to really worry about.

It seems like wine, coffee and chocolate are the things local news likes to report on the most. Every 2-3 months, there is some new article on how one of these items is good for you, or bad for you. The stories flipflop on the next cycle. It tells me that none of the people studying these things know f*ck all about anything, but they know they can score funding for studying these three items.

Yeah, the only thing I've ever gotten addicted to was a twice-daily caffeine/ibuprofen combo. That's one hell of a headache if you decide to quit.

Getting burned out on the whole "good for you bad for you" thing.

People dont drink coffee for health benefits unless you count being mildly wired as a health benefit. And people sure as hell dont eat chocolate for antioxidants.

Sure that coffee may reduce your risk of developing scoliosis by .0002 percent, but the 6 packs of nutrasweet you dump in it increases your risk of growing a second spleen by .12 percent.
