The author of this article, Alida Nugent (who I'm fairly confident is not related to Ted), personifies what's wrong with today's culture. Taking something as simple as a song and making it something that it isn't, nor was ever meant to be.

She (I assume Alida is a she) overanalyzes every single song on the list, which I'm sure she does in everything in her life as well. This wouldn't be a problem except that she apparently has a platform were people actually listen to her and might take what she says seriously.

They're songs, Alida. They're not real. Get over it.

Hmmm, yeah ... not seeing most of the list.

I was thinking something like "Possum Kingdom."

Does the song the guy sings in Flower of Flesh and Blood count as a love song?

2011-01-19 06:24:36 PM
Only ten? I'm sure Taylor Swift has written more than ten songs.

2011-01-19 06:26:20 PM
"This song is about a dead biatch"
Ween on a live intro to 'Cold Blows the Wind'

2011-01-19 06:29:05 PM
I think it's "Slaanesh", not Slidesh....

2011-01-19 06:29:20 PM
I'm familiar with only 2 of those songs.

Or at least some Nick Cave.

The author of the article is an asshole.

I don't think "Don't stand so close to me" was supposed to be a love song.

And it's nice that she gives "Hello" some creepy points for the video. But if we are talking creepy love stories in music videos then "Mary Jane's Last Dance" needs a mention.

2011-01-19 06:33:58 PM
I'm familiar with 2 of the songs, and she overplays the significance terribly.

Baby, It's Cold Outside was a private song between Frank Loesser and his wife. They sang it at winter parties, and friends convinced them to let it out into the wild. The crude seduction/roofie element wasn't intended beyond the confines of the two of them. AKA a joke.

The Girl Is Mine is saccharin not creepy. Although with McCartney it's a fine line sometimes. The confusion of love and ownership isn't weird: it's a staple cliche of love songs.

Lightweights, I say. Check out "Young Girl" by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap (new window) if you want creepy lyrics.

Baby I don't know what it is but ewe drive me crazy
And every time I'm around ewe girl it feels amazing
And I'm on my best behavior when I'm with my baby
Cause I can't lose my baby...

I done met a lot of girls in my life but they not like ewe
Nooooooooooo
I done been with the best, and
Baby ewe're the best of the best
Ewe're the greatest.

(Chorus)
I don't know what is it but
I Love ewe (x3)
I don't know what ewe do but
I love ewe
Oooh baby

Baby
When ewe're gone all I do is think about my baby
I'm so gone off ewer loving I don't know why
Maybe it's the way ewe love me, hold me, kiss me
Cause Baby I...

Whatever it is... I'm satisfied
I don't want ewe to ever change
Cause Baby ewe got me and that's no lie
I'ma stay right here with my baby and I don't know why

(Chorus)

Any list of creepy love songs that doesn't include this one can't be legit:

The Sarah Palin Battle Hymn

She's a cold blast from Alaska ingrained with common sense,
She's not a Harvard lawyer but she knew what the Founders meant.
A cold blast from the north that freezes Congress in their tracks,
With God and the Tea Party, she's gonna take it back.

Sarah Palin, she won't listen to their bunk,
Sarah Palin coming South to hunt some skunk,
Sarah Palin - she'll throw 'em all in jail,
And when she gets to Washington, it'll be cold as hell.

Sarah has the wisdom to walk through an open door,
She's stomping out the wretches where the evil lies in store.
She will scrub the floors and sweep the riff-raff into cracks,
With God and the Tea Party, she's gonna take it back.

Sarah Palin, she won't listen to their bunk,
Sarah Palin coming South to hunt some skunk,
Sarah Palin - she'll throw 'em all in jail,
And when she gets to Washington, it'll be cold as hell.

SPOKEN WORD:

Congress pats themselves from some new bill they just passed
I watch as my freedom slowly runs through an hourglass
They think they spend our money better than we do
But they can talk until they're blue and old
'Cuz if they ever gave us anything
They always wanted something in return . . . Sarah knows!

OPERA-STYLE:

Saraaaaah's marching onnnnnnnn onnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

CLOSING DEDICATION:

I'd like to dedicate that to the Tea Party and all the patriots.

2011-01-19 06:42:57 PM

Free Radical: Or at least some Nick Cave.

I was just thinking that. How about freakin' "Loverman," huh?

L is for love.
O is for only you that I do.
V is for loving virtually all that you are.
E is for loving almost everything that you do.
R is for rape me.
M is for murder me.
A is for answerin' all of my prayers.
N is for knowin' your loverman's going to be the answer to all of yours.

Seriously, it doesn't get much creepier than that.

White Wedding's not on the list? A song about brother/sister incest?

2011-01-19 06:45:36 PM
they picked the wrong police song. "don't stand so close to me"is too obvious about it's subject matter. it's "i'll be watching you" that is the more vague reference to all things odd, stalkerish and creepily obsessed. and yet, it gets played at nearly all weddings in america.

Missing "Possession", by Sarah McLachlan. There's an interesting story behind that song too.

2011-01-19 06:46:14 PM
"Every breath you take, I'll be watching you." - The Police.

"It's true you were a virgin until you met me. I was the first to make you hot, and wetty-wetty. You tell your parents that we're going outp; never to the movies, just straight to my house. You said it yourself, you like it like I do; so put your lips on my d*ck and suck my a55-hole too." - 2 Live Crew.

"I'll make you happy, just like your mama said. I'll make you happy, just like your daddy said to me." - The Divinyls

Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - it's serious
My, my, my, my, my, my baby, goodbye

There were times when I could
Have "strangled" her
(But you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her)
WOULD YOU PLEASE
LET ME SEE HER !

Do you really think
She'll pull through ?
Do you really think
She'll pull through ?
Do ...
Let me whisper my last goodbyes

"Baby It's Cold Outside" is pretty much a date rape song:

I really can't stay
(but baby it's cold outside)
I've got to go away
(but baby it's cold outside)
This evening has been
(been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice
(i'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
My mother will start worry
(beautiful whats your hurry)
My father will be pacing the floor
(listen to the fireplace roar)
So really i'd better scurry
(beautiful please don't hurry)
but maybe just a half a drink more
(put some records on while i pour)
the neighbors might faint
(baby it's bad out there)
say what's in this drink?
(no cabs to be had out there)
i wish i knew how
(your eyes are like starlight now)
to break this spell
(i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
i ought to say "no, no, no sir"
(mind if i move in closer)
at least i'm gonna say that i tried
(what's the sense in hurtin' my pride)
i really can't stay
(oh baby don't hold out)

both:baby it's cold out side

i simply must go
(but baby it's cold outside)
the answer is no
(but baby it's cold outside)
your welcome has been
(how lucky that you droped in)
so nice and warm
(look out the window at that storm)
my sister will be suspicious
(gosh your lips look delcious)
my brother will be there at the door
(waves upon the tropical shore)
my maiden aunts mind is vicious
(gosh your lips are delicous)
but maybe just a cigarette more
(never such a blizzard before)
i've gotta get home
(but baby you'd freeze out there)
say lend me a coat
(it's up to your knees out there)
you've really been grand
(i thrill when you touch my hand)
but don't you see?
(how can you do this thing to me?)
there's bound to be talk tomorrow
(think of my lifelong sorrow)
at least there will be plenty implied
(if you got namonia and died)
i really can't stay
(get over that old out)

both:baby it's cold
baby it's cold outside

HopScotchNSoda: "Deila's* Gone" by Johnny Cash. A love song about the woman he shot to death.

*too lazy to look up the spelling.

you got it right:

Delia, oh, Delia Delia all my life
If I hadn't have shot poor
Delia I'd have had her for my wife
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

I went up to Memphis
And I met Delia there Found her in her parlor
And I tied to her chair
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

She was low down and trifling
And she was cold and mean
Kind of evil make me want to Grab my sub machine
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

First time I shot her I shot her in the side
Hard to watch her suffer
But with the second shot she died
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

But jailer, oh, jailer Jailer,
I can't sleep 'Cause all around my bedside
I hear the patter of Delia's feet
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

So if you woman's devilish
You can let her run
Or you can bring her down and do her
Like Delia got done
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

/I love that song.

18 Yellow Roses by Bobby Prins:

Eignteen yellow roses came today
Eighteen yellow roses in a pretty bouquet
When the boy came to the door
I didn't know what to say
But eighteen yellow roses came today
I opened up the card to see what it said
I couldn't believe my eyes
When I had read
Though you belong to another I love you anyway
Yes eighteen yellow roses came today

I never doubted your love for a minute
I always thought that you would be true
But now this box and the flowers in it
I guess there's nothin' left for me to do
But ask to meet the boy that's done this thing
And find out if he's got plans to buy you a ring
'Cause eighteen yellow roses will wilt and die one day
But a father's love will never fade away

'Cause eighteen yellow roses will wilt and die one day
But a father's love will never fade away
But a father's love will never fade away

Is that crappy "Bleeding Love" song on the list?

2011-01-19 07:13:54 PM
I find the window to the kitchen,
and I let myself in,
I rummage through the refridgerator,
Grab myself a beer,
I can't believe I'm really here,
As she's lying in that bed,
I can almost feel her touch,
And her anxious breath,
I stumble through the hallway,
Outside the bedroom door,
I hear her call out to me,
I hear the fear in her voice,
She pulls the covers tighter,
I press against the door,
I will be with her tonight...

'Tyler' by The Toadies
My favorite stalker/Toadies song ever. Ever.

"I'll be watching you" is particularly funny because it's a popular wedding song and it's a song basically about a stalker.

2011-01-19 07:15:49 PM
I'd give a shout for another Police tune, that anthem for stalkers and sexually obsessed types everywhere, Every Breath You Take:

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I'll be watching you

Oh can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep calling baby, baby please...

Oh can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you

Every move you make
Every step you take
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take (I'll be watching you)

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay (I'll be watching you)

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake (I'll be watching you)

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay (I'll be watching you)

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take (I'll be watching you)

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay (I'll be watching you)

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake (I'll be watching you)

Every single day

"Don't stand so close to me" isn't a love song. Its just a story of a creepy guy. Its not like Sting was saying he wanted to bang a chick half his age.

Sleeping in the Devil's Bed - Daniel Lanois

I thought of you in blue and red
I thought of you, way you were playing
I thought of you in my bed
You were there bound and chained

I thought of you there next to me
Wearing your pretty face
I thought of everything you could be
Sleeping in the Devil's bed

I looked for you when lights were low
And I paid for what I had
I looked for you way down below
Till I felt I was going mad

I think of you when I tell myself
And the fever rises high
I think of you and I get what's comin'
Sleeping in the Devil's bed

Oh, why, why, why, why, baby why?
Oh, why, why, why, why, why, why, baby why?

I woke up in the steady rain
I woke up when you said
"It's late and I'm feeling heavy
Could you hold my aching head?"

I found myself tangled in wire
I found you there in my dream
I found you in desire
You had left the Devil's bed

You had left the Devil's bed
Oh baby, why?
You had left the Devil's bed

There were a slew of masturbation songs in the 80s. Sure, we all do it, but it's generally creepy to sing about your habitual self abuse.

downstairs: "Don't stand so close to me" isn't a love song. Its just a story of a creepy guy. Its not like Sting was saying he wanted to bang a chick half his age.

From TFA: "This song is about teachers who want to sleep with students and then it also mentions 'Lolita'."

You and the author of TFA are both wrong. It's about a teacher who is fending off unwanted advances from a love-struck student. And though he's eventually tempted anyway, it's even more painful for him to realize that he's beginning to think like Humbert Humbert. He doesn't want to go there.

/Sting was a schoolteacher at one time

...creepiest love song (evar)

D.O.A
Bloodrock

Laying here looking at the ceiling
Someone lays a sheet across my chest
Something warm is flowing down my fingers
Pain is flowing all through my back

I try to move my arms and there's no feeling
And when I look I see there's nothing there
The face beside me stopped it totally bleeding
The girl I knew has such a distant stare

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Then I looked straight at the attendant
His face is pale as it can be
He bends and whispers something softly
He says there's no chance for me

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Life is flowing out my body
Pain is flowing out with my blood
The sheets are red and moist where I'm lying
God in Heaven, teach me how to die

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

If we're counting the music videos, then the list needs more Tainted Love (terrible quality)

2011-01-19 07:26:43 PM
So we are all in agreement that this was a crappy list? And that "Everything Breath You Take" should have at least been the Police song that was listed?

Thank heaven for Little Girls - Maurice Chevalier

Thank heaven for little girls
for little girls get bigger every day!

Thank heaven for little girls
they grow up in the most delightful way!

Those little eyes so helpless and appealing
one day will flash and send you crashin' thru the ceilin'

Thank heaven for little girls
thank heaven for them all,
no matter where no matter who
for without them, what would little boys do?

Thank heaven... thank heaven...
Thank heaven for little girls!
