Another league official says the by-laws will be amended to allow for headscarves if the parents assume liability.

Meh who cares. Is anyone allowed to wear head equipment of any kind in the game? Usually sports don't allow any sort of extraneous and loose clothing, for good reason.

Besides, they'll assume liability until something happens, and then they'll cry that their snowflake was allowed to hurt herself.

Keep your headscarves for your religious ceremonies, and play ball if you want to, just like the rest of us, sans scarves.

Scarves vs. Scarves?

It'll never work...

2011-01-18 11:18:18 PM
...and she was put back into the game once the officials could quickly confer on liability issues.

Big. Farkin. Deal. Just a bunch of muck raking bullshiat.

This may surprise you, but lots of people play sports worldwide and do just fine with various kinds of clothing, especially religious clothing.

Seems like they need to develop some sort of action headscarf, for today's modern Muslim woman on the go.

Yea.. we should always give authority figures "oopsies" when they get caught farking up.

I played bball against a sheik 15 or so years ago and was shocked when some asshole ref did the exact same thing as TFA. Some dudes are just dicks.

Because nothing shows your commitment to modesty by landing a hook shot while rocking your hijab. Idiots, every single person involved in the incident.

2011-01-18 11:51:00 PM
Well, as long as she gets to play now, it's mostly a non-story.

Normal rules prevent "dangerous"/loose articles, but the picture given doesn't seem to indicate that it'd be much of a risk, and now that the refs are on her side...Meh.

2011-01-18 11:51:40 PM
i never heard of these "i'm a muslim so you must cater to my demands" stories before 9/11. i bet a lot of muslims who renounce the attacks tacitly condone them.

or maybe i'm trolling.

Looking at the photo I think the other girl's ponytail could just as easily cause an eye injury - in the name of safety maybe they should cut their ponytails off (but then would we men have to hold onto when doing the 'doggy')

Whoops. I'm a bit tipsy. I meant the extra large condom kind of Sheik.

This isn't how people playing sports wearing religious garb actually works but I know you totally think otherwise so don't let reality stop you from holding your passionate opinion!

If you guys don't think the threat is real, I'm here to say you are wrong. This isn't a new threat either. Look at all terror and mayhem Kareem Abdul Jabbar unleashed on the NBA and our white women.

Hasn't this great nation suffered enough?

It might blow up. That's pretty dangerous.

This is amusing because of the huge contradiction of the girls religion. She's allowed to play basketball (of all sports), but still required to wear a headscarf?

It's amusing on another level in that if this were a story about some fundamentalist wacko christian, liberals would be berating her like no other.. but because it's a muslim, everyone has to jump in and defend her right to 'ball in a headscarf.

Am I the only one who is going to point out that the sports pictured are non contact sports where hands would not be involved near an opponents head?

I mean volleyball? Soccer is nominally non contact but again hands near the head shouldn't be an issue. That and forgive my ignorance but the last picture seems to be 'running away from the basketball court' which I think is only a sport in Cleveland.

That being said, if the bylaws don't expressly forbid such head coverings I do call into question the overreaction by the official in TFA.

We just did that thread about the Texas girl and her rosary.

The vast majority of complaints were from offended Catholics whining how rosaries aren't jewelry.

I already answered it further up thread. The Hijab is a way for women to express modesty. Nothing says modesty like a tomahawk dunk from the free throw line.

This.

Reminds me of the army. They have exceptions to many rules for religious persons, except things like facial hair; whatever you have has to work with a gas mask, at the very least. Function > Form.

The gas mask saves your life. How is that comparable to sports again?
