Did Olivia or Broyles know about this?

If these were Muslim clerics we were talking about the Vatican would be a pile of rubble.

A letter like that in almost any other circumstance is evidence of a criminal conspiracy and worthy of serious jail time.

Those.... there isn't a derogatory term potent enough. Hell seems like it would be a light sentence for their crimes.

So what do the Catholics do?

Try to fast-track the guy overseeing the church at that time for sainthood.

Well, it falls right into place with all the other evil in the world doing whatever the hell they want and not getting called on it.

I remember that show. A late night comedy program like Saturday Night Live was not her best choice for a rant against the Catholic Church. When you tear up a picture of the Pope on national TV, don't just assume that everyone knows what the fark you're talking about. Write a book or go on a morning talk show. Everyone's attention that night was focused on the messenger instead of the message and she came across as a total nut.

I think she was molested by a priest. That would explain her hatred for the clergy, yet her love for the church.

She once said that priests should not be the ones telling people to be celibate for two reasons. One, they are not having sex, and two, they are having sex.

Did His Holiness not prove worthy of the Sainthood by granting the offending members of the clergy his forgiveness for their mortal failings?

I hope all the victims sue the Vatican for billions. They systematically sexually abused children and protected the guilty.

This smells strongly of troll, but I am going to go with this one anyway. I don't care if the Pope grants them HIS forgiveness. Instituting a policy to hide said behavior from the authorities is the issue at hand. I choose to believe if he thought that was okay then he is someplace nice and toasty right now. Same goes for the f*ckers that the church was systematically protecting.

Aside from that Foley guy (a politician, albeit a Republican politician), I gotta say the American flavor of fundy Protestantism is much better. The sex scandals seem to involve adults.

I understand that the Vatican believes in forgiveness, but what ever happened to "render onto Caesar that which is Caesar's?" Yes the church can forgive you for your crime, but you still owe your debt to the civil authorities. It makes me more glad to be a former Catholic. Several of my family members still believe, but they believe more in the faith than the institution because the Catholic faith is ok but the Catholic Church sucks sometimes.

Well, unfortunately hypocrisy is all there is anymore. So no, not really. I am so disillusioned with the world.

I'm sure this will cause them to change their ways and see to it that the molesters face justice, all while doing anything they can to actually help those affected by these crimes.

let me tell you, I used to be a jehovahs witness, when someone would try to tell me the truth about my religion i'd deny it and say they were making up lies to discredit my religion

now that i know better and half my family has shunned me I know how they'll react, they'll just deny it

This is clearly a blood libel against the Vatican... Like the numerous blood libels they sponsored against my fellow Jews, just because matzah tastes better when baked with the blood of Christian children... Not that I would know...

You got it. The Ultra-Catholics will either claim that the letter is a fake made by the Devil or the Jews, or plug their fingers in their ears and yell "LALALALALALALA" (much like they did when all that kiddie-diddling was going on).

2011-01-18 11:34:46 PM
I don't believe in God. I used to say "I believed in god but not in the church". I've since decided I just don't believe. but let's say I did... the church consists of men (and women sometimes). That means they're subject to the same potential for sin as the rest of us including but not limited to: greed, lust for power, suffering shame and the need to cover up, but most of all the need to CONTROL OTHERS. They should not be trusted, and if you're a cathiolic, especially so as this scandal demonstrates.

If you do believe in God then fine. I don't have issue with that. It's a free country. For God's sake man... (no pun intended) give up the church. You do not need an intermediary to believe. You don't need an intermediary to be good. You don't need them to pray. You can read the bible yourself and draw your own conclusions. The church wants to control you *for their benefit*. Does the church do good deeds? Sure. They also are the cause of a lot of pain and suffering and this is not a zero sum game. Go worship god on your own terms and leave the human element behind.

edit I realize that the church is responsible for the holy text you read (koran, torah, bible, whatever) so you can't entirely get away from the church and the human element, but you can at least minimize their influence. I also realize that the church in particular the catholic church says you msut see a priest to confess and you must go thru certain rituals like being baptized, taking communion etc. That's what they tell you so they remain relevant and in control.

Please tell me that someone is going to lay siege to that creepy little country and drag every one of those farks out to prosecute them. They're an international NAMBLA convention hiding behind religion, that has to break more than a few international laws.

By feeling loyalty to the local parish, as opposed to the Church as a whole? That's where the collection goes. The Vatican makes so much money off of business interests and holdings worldwide that they basically don't gather the collections.

Seriously, I like the people in the congregation, I like my local priests (Barnabites, an order of reformers), and I like many Catholics of my own age, but the Church itself needs to basically have a complete turnover and start anew.

One of the few pieces of solace I find in all this is that the farkwits in charge are all in their 60s at minimum. That means, God willing, they will all be long dead before I am, and so I will see people of my (hopefully more tolerant) generation in charge some day, if the Church doesn't nosedive and die out by that point.
