I wish he'd gone into more detail about how he started this. Did he just plop himself down by a den one day and tell them, "Sup wolves, I'm moving in?"

Reminds me of Never Cry Wolf, another heavily embellished account of life with wolves. But Farley Mowat's story was much more plausible.

oi_piss_me_off: I wonder if this is going to end like that grizzly bear guy?

That grizzly bear guy actually succeeded in living up close and personal with the bears of the area. He only found himself eaten because he didn't realize that approaching a strange bear that had migrated recently into the area (and as such was very hungry) was less than smart.

This guy had the presence of mind to realize when he had violated etiquette. It still could have gotten himself killed, though.

Big Effin Deal. Didn't Farley Mowat do that like, in the early 1960s? Eat what the wolves ate? I guess that he didn't do it for a whole year because he's not an idiot.

Article never says wolves ate or had anything to do with any fruit or berries.

Mowat probably didn't do it for real. A lot of what he states the wolves did is pretty well refuted by actual research. Wikipedia summarizes.

Hilarious! 'Cause, Republicans are, like worse. And stuff. Worse than wolves. Or animals that you can't live with. Or something. Because I don't like them.

Republican.

Wrong. He died because he brought a girlfriend up with him who started menstruating. The smell of her little visitor caused a reaction in at least one of the bears, triggering its survivor instincts, and the rest is history. Either way, you are an idiot if you try to live with dangerous wild animals.

I'm gonna call shenanigans, here. This guy left out a bunch of details:

#1 - He states he did this on a reservation, which is true. It's the "Wolf Education and Research Center", which is a fenced in reserve, not open wilderness.

#2 - The wolves are acclimated to humans, being partly raised by them as pups and fed over the fence. So, not surprising they'd be accepting of his presence.

#3 - That "raw deer and elk" is donated by hunters or by road kill, not hunted by the wolves themselves. Cleaned and checked for parasites.

#4 - At any time, he could leave the fenced area and go straight to the research center. I personally doubt he spent a full 365 days out in the Idaho wilderness.

I used to donate to the WERC, but there was a controversy back in the late 90s over a wolf that died under questionable circumstances, and the benefits of studying wolves so acclimated to human interaction.

Airfoilsguy: Wolves don't eat fruit and berries

Yes they do. In Europe they used to have a serious problem with wolves sneaking into the vineyards and eating the grapes. And coyotes love melons.

Everyone has a job in a pack. Babysitter sometimes goes to elder members that can't hunt anymore.. Makes perfect sense really.
